Jonathan Tobin: They back ‘Palestine’ because they hate Jews
The idea that there is something wrong with publicly exposing those who engage in antisemitism is bizarre, especially coming from those in the academy who have done their best to drive conservative critics of their toxic theories from the public square. Cancel culture is about demonizing and penalizing those who engage in normal political debate. Opposing it has never meant justifying and defending actual racism like those who are neo-Nazis or members of the Ku Klux Klan.

That’s why the doxxing of Harvard students who support the destruction of Israel and who back Hamas terrorism isn’t wrong. Reasonable people would never excuse anyone who suggested lynching African-Americans. Yet that is what is being asked for by those who are cheering on or justifying the pogroms against Jews in Israel. Indeed, Harvard even seeks to protect their right to be hired at the country’s most prestigious law firms and corporations—something it would never do for those who call for the murder of any other minority.

In a saner era of American public life, those who rationalize Hamas slaughter as “decolonization,” as Attiah does, wouldn’t be editors at The Washington Post. They’d be driven to the margins of American society where they could advocate for whatever variant of antisemitism they like.

The same could be said of the Daily Wire’s Candace Owens, who described the pro-Hamas demonstration in London as proof that “people are not accepting the media narrative about what is happening in the Middle East despite the insistent rhetoric from government officials.” But what else did we expect from a defender of Kanye West’s antisemitism, whether she calls herself a conservative or not?

The ability of Harvard’s Jew-haters to go on to glittering careers, or the ability of Owens and Attiah to retain their influential perches, isn’t the real question. It’s whether society has now gone so far in accepting the demonization of Israel and Jews that there is no penalty attached to public expressions of Jew-hatred, whether they pose as sympathy for Palestinians or not.

What does matter is whether moral people are willing to go along with the pretense that demanding Israel’s eradication and the murder of its population is acceptable discourse. What is needed is for all people of goodwill—no matter where they sit on the political spectrum, no matter their faith or background—to denounce these vile ideas as hate speech. What’s more, they should demand that those who support this hatred be given the opprobrium and shunning that would be their fate if they were avowed Nazis, rather than merely those who support Hitler’s Islamist successors.
Anatomy of a Blood Libel
On Friday, the Associated Press published two pieces related to the blast. The first, quoting a French intelligence assessment, pointed to a “Palestinian rocket” as the cause, and the second, a full AP investigation of the available evidence, made a strong case for the failed rocket theory as well, even citing morning-after AP photos of the blast zone that showed “a small crater … in the hospital’s parking lot [that] appeared to be about a meter across, suggesting a device with a much smaller explosive payload than a bomb.” BBC published a quasi mea culpa for their initially hasty reporting, writing, “The devastating human cost of the explosion at the Al Ahli hospital in Gaza and the competing narratives put forward by Israel and the Hamas-led Palestinian authorities, as to who was responsible, have made this a difficult and complex story to cover … However, as we have reported, based on the evidence available it isn’t possible to be definitive about what caused the blast. We will continue to analyse new information as it emerges.” And Canada’s public news outlet CBC wrote, “UN calls for investigation into Gaza hospital strike as France says Israel not responsible.”

By Saturday, Canada’s military had published the findings of their own inquiry, saying, “Analysis conducted independently by the Canadian Forces Intelligence Command indicates with a high degree of confidence that Israel did not strike the al-Ahli hospital on 17 October 2023,” adding their voice to the conclusion already reached by U.S. and French intelligence services. Al Jazeera and other outlets carried the Canadian conclusion in their reporting. The Wall Street Journal was also ready on Saturday to add their analysis to the mix, concluding that “Video Analysis Shows Gaza Hospital Hit by Failed Rocket Meant for Israel.”

And on Sunday, The New York Times took much of the air out of their initial reporting, writing, “Six days after Hamas accused Israel of bombing a hospital in Gaza City and killing hundreds of people, the armed Palestinian group has yet to produce or describe any evidence linking Israel to the strike, says it cannot find the munition that hit the site and has declined to provide detail to support its count of the casualties.”

This Monday, the Times editors issued an unusual note:
The Times’s initial accounts attributed the claim of Israeli responsibility to Palestinian officials, and noted that the Israeli military said it was investigating the blast. However, the early versions of the coverage—and the prominence it received in a headline, news alert and social media channels—relied too heavily on claims by Hamas, and did not make clear that those claims could not immediately be verified. The report left readers with an incorrect impression about what was known and how credible the account was.


But on Tuesday, in spite of the Italian foreign minister announcing definitively that Israel did not cause the blast, and that the death toll was more likely 50, not 500, and in spite of Vanity Fair publishing Slack messages from inside The New York Times which showed that some editors were concerned from the jump about publishing the claims presented by a single Palestinian source, NPR published a piece which reads, “experts are increasingly doubtful that the publicly available evidence will be enough to settle the question of who was behind the incident.”

Also on Tuesday, The New York Times published its own analysis of video footage of the suspected rocket, casting doubt on the already established analysis of some of its peers, claiming that the rocket in question was actually fired from Israel and would have detonated two miles from the hospital. They write:
The Times’s finding does not answer what actually did cause the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital blast, or who is responsible. The contention by Israeli and American intelligence agencies that a failed Palestinian rocket launch is to blame remains plausible. But the Times analysis does cast doubt on one of the most-publicized pieces of evidence that Israeli officials have used to make their case and complicates the straightforward narrative they have put forth.

And the beat goes on.


Herzog on Islamists: Europe will be next
Israel is at the forefront of a global clash of civilizations, Israeli President Isaac Herzog said Tuesday.

“Hamas, Al Qaeda and Islamic State are all together in wishing to ban us all from the face of the earth,” he told a group of European Jewish leaders. “It starts with Israel, it starts with the Jews. It will never end there. Europe will be next. And that is why we are fighting a battle on behalf of the entire world.”

Herzog expressed serious concern about the significant rise in antisemitism in Europe and around the world in recent weeks. “This is a message that must be heard loud and clear,” he said. “When [anti-Israel protesters] say ‘from the river to the sea,’ they mean without any Jews.”

“When they demonstrate on campuses against Israel—they mean without Jews. When they criticize Israel fighting to defend its people, and fighting against the most brutal attack that humanity has seen in last generation—they mean no Jews,” he added.

“This is a fight not only against Israel. It is a fight against antisemites all over the world, and we are here to strengthen our brothers and sisters of Jewish communities all over the world, to show solidarity with them, because we are all in this together,” he said.


Israel's UN delegation vows to wear Nazi-era Yellow Stars until the Security Council condemns Hamas for terror atrocities and demands release of hostages
Israel's ambassador to the UN displayed a yellow star reminiscent of Holocaust victims on his chest Monday, provocatively pledging to wear the badge until members of the Security Council condemn Hamas 'atrocities.'

The state has previously called for Secretary General Antonio Guterres to resign after he said last week that the October 7 Hamas attack that killed 1,400 'didn't happen in a vacuum.'

'Some of you have learned nothing in the past 80 years. Some of you have forgotten why this body was established,' envoy Gilad Erdan said.

Erdan denounced the Security Council for 'staying silent' over the unprecedented deadly attacks by Hamas Palestinian militants against Israel.

The deeply divided 15-member council has not adopted a single resolution on the three-week-long war between Israel and Hamas.

'So, I will remind you. From this day on, each time you look at me you will remember what staying silent in the face of evil means,' the ambassador said.

'Just like my grandparents, and the grandparents of millions of Jews, from now on my team and I will wear yellow stars,' he said, standing up to affix one on the breast of his suit inscribed with the words 'Never Again,' in reference to the yellow stars Jews were forced to wear by the Nazis.

But Erdan will wear it 'as a symbol of pride,' he said.

'We will wear this star until you wake up and condemn the atrocities of Hamas.'


Yad Vashem: Ambassador’s yellow-star UN protest dishonors Holocaust victims
The head of Jerusalem’s Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial on Tuesday criticized Israel’s U.N. ambassador for donning a yellow Star of David during an address to the U.N. Security Council, saying the stunt “dishonors both the victims of the Holocaust and the State of Israel.”

The very public dispute between the two Israeli officials comes despite calls for unity as the army is fighting Hamas on the ground in Gaza, and as pro-Palestinian students at campuses across the United States are vilifying Israel and overtly or covertly backing the Islamist terror group.

“The yellow patch symbolizes the helplessness of the Jewish people and being at the mercy of others. Today we have an independent country and a strong army,” tweeted Yad Vashem chairman Dani Dayan. “We are masters of our destiny. Today we place a blue-white flag on the lapel, not a yellow patch.”

Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. Gilad Erdan told the Security Council Monday that he and his staff would wear the yellow stars, inscribed with the words “Never Again,” until members of the body condemned Hamas’s atrocities.

Dayan’s criticism came a day after the Yad Vashem chief urged caution in a statement to JNS with regard to comparing Hamas’s Oct. 7 massacre with the systematic mass murder of six million Jews during the Holocaust. Such comparisons, he said, risked belittling or marginalize both the past and present events.

Left, Right, Haredi: Three Great Awakenings of the Gaza War
Three major sectors of Israeli society, at odds before the war, are now coming together. That unity cannot be allowed to dissipate.

An unspeakable calamity befell the Jews of Israel on Simchat Torah 2023. The war in its wake is an absolute necessity, and its magnitude and duration are yet to be seen. The duty of the hour is the war effort—on the frontlines and at home. Alongside it, there are lessons that must be internalized. Some, political and strategic, will come later. One, no less urgent, begins now: the lesson of unity.

In the years leading up to the Second Temple, the Roman empire allowed the Jews to fight among themselves, watching as we came apart internally. After we were done fighting, the Romans’ job was straightforward. As captured terrorists noted, our enemy, too, identified our discord and disharmony. They were bolstered by our weakness. If we wish to prevail, we must unite. That requires willingness to listen to the other side, and readiness for compromise.

Until recently, it seems these qualities were in short supply. Yet I wish to note three awakenings that have taken place since the war began and that suggest something has changed. Each one occurred within a different sector of Israeli society namely: the left, the right, and the Haredim. Together, these awakenings should be a great source of hope. And don’t we need it.

Awakening I: The Left
The awakening on Israel’s left is characterized by a single name: Halil.

Netiv HaAsara, a moshav close to the border fence with the Gaza Strip, was one of the first to suffer the horrors of October 7 when Hamas terrorists paraglided into the village and then went from house to house on a killing spree. Sabine Taase, who survived the slaughter—her husband and one of her sons were murdered, and another two were injured—testified that the terrorists had detailed maps of the houses and their inhabitants: names, children, the presence of dogs, and other details. Who was the source of these crucial facts and figures? In an interview that quickly went viral, Taase pointed to Halil.

Halil, a resident of Beit Lahia in the Gaza Strip, had worked as the odd-job man in Netiv HaAsara for decades. He was efficient, versatile, and well-liked. According to Yifat Ben Shoshan, a longtime resident, he singlehandedly built half the village. Halil served loyally as a reminder that peaceful cooperation between Jews and Palestinians, an aspiration of Netiv HaAsara’s residents symbolize by the white dove painted above the words “Path to Peace” on the moshav’s security wall, was somehow possible. Until he turned his back on Netiv HaAsara and, according to Taase at least, handed over the detailed information that made the massacre easy. “I never trusted him,” Taase added. In other cases, Gazan civilians who had worked in Israel physically accompanied Hamas terrorists to serve as guides.

The barbarism of Hamas, coupled by the clear complicity of Gazan civilians (who also celebrated the human booty taken back to Gaza), has led to statements on the part of leading leftwing figures that would have been unthinkable some weeks back. “We need to throw Hamas into the sea,” tweeted professor Amir Hetsroni, “even if a few Gazan babies, terrorists of 2043, will be killed en route.” “Any occupation right now with international law,” he added for good measure, “is akin to solving a computer problem by means of the Talmud.” Michal Haran, a self-professed socialist and peace activist, openly supported statements from the extreme-right former politician Moshe Feiglin. “I believed we were the baddies,” wrote Roni Gelbfish, explaining that he believed “the occupation” to be the underlying source of conflict. “But yesterday,” he continued, “I returned to texts from Lamentations, from the valley of death, . . . and it’s there. It always was. Our dead brethren scream out to us from the generational tunnel: remember what Amalek did to you!!!”


Satellite images show Israeli tanks 5 km. into Gaza - New York Times
Satellite photos published by The New York Times on Tuesday show Israeli tanks have reached Al-Bahr Boulevard in Gaza, a large street that runs across the Strip from the beach toward Jabalia.

Scale of Israel's advancement
The important junction of Bahr and Rashid streets is not overlooked by the IDF, according to the photos. Rashid is a major street that runs north-south. Rashid begins around a kilometer south of the border and runs all the way south, passing Shati camp and the Gaza port before heading to the southern area of the Gaza Strip. As the street arrives at the junction with Bahr and heads south there are a number of small hotels and “chalets” that people can stay at on the beach.

The Times report says that “satellite imagery taken Monday morning shows the substantial scale of one of Israel’s main advances into northern Gaza, where hundreds of armored vehicles have pushed miles past the border into urban areas on the outskirts of Gaza City.” Al-Ain media in the Gulf also reported about the photos, saying they are a “silent witness” to Israel’s advance.

They also show evidence of airstrikes and artillery bombardment, the reports say. Yesterday a report at Al-Ain also said photos and video from Gaza had shown that Israeli forces had reached Salah al-Din Street, another important north-south thoroughfare. This puts Israeli forces south of Gaza City and now also northwest of it on the beach.

Satellite photos are increasingly a way for analysts and news organizations to track a conflict when on-the-ground reports are absent.


'Destabilisation of Hamas is beginning', says IDF spokesperson
IDF spokesperson Major Doron Spielman says the “destabilisation of Hamas is beginning.”

Israel tanks are reported to have entered Gaza city, leading to the Israeli army finding and rescuing one hostage, a female soldier, Ori Megidish.

Major Spielman told Sky News Australia host Andrew Bolt that Hamas is “fighting back” but that Israel has “very carefully prepared” for their retaliation.

“They are fighting, then they retreat into their tunnels, come back out, launch a massive attack, they’ve been waiting and they are hungry to kill our soldiers, but we have very carefully prepared for this, we’ve had the time to do it,” he said.

“We are having excellent success in terms of hitting their terror targets. We have eliminated a number of their top commanders over the past 48 hours. We are destabilising them, the destabilisation of Hamas is beginning.”


Ground incursion is Israel's ‘biggest chance’ to save hostages in Gaza
Former IDF Gaza division deputy commander Brigadier General Amir Avivi says the biggest chance Israel has to save hostages kept in Gaza is through its ground incursion.

Ori Megidish, an Israel Defence Forces soldier, was liberated during an Israeli incursion into Gaza, according to the IDF and the internal security agency Shin Bet.

“I am happy the moment we started manoeuvring and advancing we found the first opportunity to release the hostage and you have to see the people of Israel how happy they are after so difficult weeks we all experienced,” the former deputy commander told Sky News Australia.

Hamas released a short video showing three women who are believed to be held hostage by the terrorist group.

The women pleaded with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a prisoner exchange. Brigadier General Avivi claimed the women were coerced into making those statements.

“When you look at what Hamas is demanding, this is exactly what we shouldn’t do,” he added.

“It’s demanding to stop manoeuvring, it’s calling the people to fight each other over politics – we are not going to do this.”

At a recent event in Herzliya, Israel, families of the over 200 Israelis being held hostage in the Gaza Strip gathered to demand the safe return of their relatives. Avi Yemini spoke to the mother of Romi Gonen, one of the hostages, as well as relatives of Mia Schem, the young woman seen in a video released 10 days after the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack. In addition, a friend of one of the young Nepali students who was studying in Israel at the time and was kidnapped to the Gaza Strip spoke out.




Father of Danielle Waldman recalls finding out Hamas killed 24-year-old daughter
Eyal Waldman has emotionally recalled how he found out his 24-year-old daughter Danielle had been murdered by Hamas terrorists on October 7.

Danielle and her 26-year-old boyfriend Noam were among hundreds of young people killed by Hamas terrorists at the Supernova music festival in southern Israel following an unexpected attack.

“I had her location on the GPS, of her phone, it sent us an SOS message of emergency and location,” Mr Waldman told Sky News Australia host Sharri Markson.

Mr Waldman explained how he went to the location of where she was killed and found that the car she had been in had “bullet holes all over”.

“Eventually we got the word that both Danielle and Noam were identified as murdered on Wednesday morning.”

Horrors on Video
On Friday, the Israeli consulate in New York City screened footage, recorded by Hamas operatives themselves, of the atrocities of October 7 for a group of journalists. The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board describes what they saw. (Please note that the following description, while not graphic, is still very hard to read.)

Why did the Hamas men, upon confronting the dead body of a teenage girl, start cheering? Why did they argue over who would get to decapitate a Thai guest worker they had shot, then proclaim “Allahu akbar” with every swing at his neck?

“Allahu akbar,” meaning “God is most great,” was on their lips over and over as they shot defenseless civilians, dragged corpses, and pumped round after round into the dead. There it was again on the terrorists’ return to Gaza, “Allahu akbar” coming from crowds as a Hamas man pulled by the hair a battered hostage with pants bloodied around her groin.

One of the Hamas men called his parents using the phone of a murdered Israeli woman, unable to contain his pride. “Put Mom on the phone,” he said. “Your son is a hero. . . . I killed ten Jews with my own hands!” The phone recorded the call, so we can know his goal: “victory or martyrdom.”

‘Anti-western alliance’: New ‘axis of evil’ emerging
Sky News host Sharri Markson says there has been an “axis of evil” that has emerged in the world, which is an “anti-western alliance” between Iran, North Korea, Russia and China.

“Foreign Affairs Editor for the Australian Greg Sheridan today writes that the strategic operation between these four nations is now intense,” she said.

“He writes: ‘North Korea is supplying weapons to Russia … the day US President Joe Biden visited Israel, Vladimir Putin was in Beijing, lavishly hosted by Xi Jinping. Putin in turn hosted Hamas leaders in Moscow.

'Iran supplies deadly drones in large quantities to Russia. Putin has pledged Russia’s long-term support for North Korean’.

“Not since World War II has the West been so strategically threatened as today.”


Alexander Downer warns of wider conflict risks amid Israel-Hamas war
Former foreign minister Alexander Downer has warned of possible broader conflict risks amid Israel’s war against Hamas.

“I don’t want to be excessively alarmist because hopefully this won’t happen, but what could happen – we need to have our eyes open to,” Mr Downer told Sky News Australia.

“First of all, just taking the Middle East – you have the conflict there we’ve been discussing, you have in Eastern Europe the Ukraine war, in the South China Sea, the aggression of China … and in particular, the threat of China to Taiwan.”

Mr Downer described possible scenarios that are at risk of happening.

“The great link here is the relationship between Russia, Iran, and China – so these three countries have set themselves up as adversaries of the West,” he said.

“This is a hugely dangerous time, so the scenario I spent some time describing may be unlikely, but there’s a risk that could happen.”


‘Extremely sad’: Kidnapped woman paraded half-naked by Hamas confirmed dead
Israel Defence Force spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus expresses his sympathies after a 22-year-old Israeli-German national, Shani Louk, was killed by Hamas terrorists.

A distressing video emerged of the woman being paraded around semi-naked by Hamas terrorists after the attack on October 7.

The Israeli ZAKA rescue service informed Shani’s family that a bone from the base of her skull had been recovered, The Time of Israel reports.

“Of course, extremely sad and brutal and the images as you said they are etched in many people’s memory,” Lieutenant Colonel Conricus told Sky News Australia.

“The brutality, the sheer joy of Palestinian men parading a half-naked woman at the back of the truck joyous at their victory.”

Despite all the craziness happening here in Israel, many Israelis are looking to the future with positivity. Maybe that is why tens of thousands of Israelis have signed up for a party on the beaches of Gaza when the war is over.

‘Inflicted untold misery’: Hamas slammed for ‘fanatical agenda’
Australia Israel and Jewish Affairs Council’s Colin Rubenstein says the world is three weeks plus into what will be a long campaign to unravel the “evil barbaric death cult” in Hamas.

“They’re effectively holding civilians in Gaza as hostages to their own crazed fanatical agenda,” he told Sky News contributor Steve Price.

“Which is to wipe out Israel, of course, and kill Jews, but they have no mercy on their own people, who they see as completely expendable.

“Israel has commenced the second phase of their campaign, which all Israelis agree has the objective of dismantling Hamas, its military, infrastructure and its political power … it’s ruled itself out of civilised society.

“Israel is doing everything possible to minimise civilian casualties.”


'Utterly disgusting': Australia's leaders giving nothing but 'lip service' on anti-Semitism
Australia’s leaders are giving nothing but “lip service” on the rise of anti-Semitism in the country, according to Sky News host Liz Storer.

Ms Storer’s remarks come as Australia has seen several pro-Palestine marches following Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7.

“All lip service, no strong action,” Ms Storer told Sky News Sharri Markson.

“We’ve yet to see any strong display of action from our premiers or our Prime Minister on this.

“We can’t really call it a rise in anti-Semitism because obviously, it’s been there all along simmering underneath the surface … and it’s taken this to see it come to the fore.

“And absolutely nothing but lip service from our leaders – it's utterly disgusting.”


‘Fundamental shift’ in Labor since Albanese came to power: Former Labor MP
Former Labor MP Michael Danby says there has been a “fundamental shift” in the Labor Party since the Albanese government came to power in 2022.

“There has been a fundamental shift in the nature of the Labor Party since Albanese came to power,” Mr Danby told Sky News host Rita Panahi.

“With the demise of Bill Shorten after two terms, the Labor right is in demise and the socialist left under any previous decade would never have had both the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, so that is the power shift that has gone on.”

Mr Danby criticised Paul Keating’s refusal to co-sign a joint statement by former prime ministers released on Monday condemning Hamas.

He was also critical of this ideological shift as it has been “much less sympathetic to our traditional allies, especially Israel”.


‘We’re in a dark place’: ‘Unabashed hatred’ exposed around the world amid Israel-Gaza war
Sky News host Chris Kenny says anyone trying to make a political point on the back of Hamas’ October 7 terror attack must be “part of the problem”.

Mr Kenny’s remarks come after the conflict in the Middle East sparked worldwide pro-Palestine rallies in support of Gaza.

“Anyone pushing the cause of Palestine, or are lining up against Israel, or pushing a line that’s anti-US or anti-Western, well, they’re hitching their political cause to a terrorist atrocity,” he said.

“No one should march for any cause on the back of this depravity.

“We are in a dark place, with unabashed hatred ... exposed now right around the world.

“This is a test not just for Israel, and not just for Palestinians, this is a test for civilisation.”


'Haunt you for life': Gruesome footage of Hamas terrorists shown to Australian journalists
Gruesome footage of Hamas militants murdering hundreds of Israeli civilians was aired to a group of Australian journalists at the Israeli Embassy.

This marks the first time the horrific video – which includes bodycam footage of Hamas terrorists – is being shown outside Israel.

Herald Sun Senior Columnist Patrick Carlyon says the footage is the sort of stuff that would “haunt you for life”.

“It is terribly sad – we're seeing it across the Western world, especially universities, where a massacre of innocent people has sort of been used as a default clarion call if you like for change in the region,” he told Sky News host Rita Panahi.

“And that’s not right, you can’t do that – this was a massacre, it’s not a starting point for change.”

Sky News host James Macpherson says “hundreds of thousands of people” around the world have “protested and chanted” for Palestine.

Mr Macpherson says tens of thousands of people in Sydney were chanting “against” Israel who were trying to “free the hostages” kidnapped by Hamas.

He said London Bridge had an estimated 100,000 people “protesting for Palestine against Israel”.

“We had protests in Germany … where tens of thousands of people for the third weekend in a row are now protesting against Israel.

“Obviously we had protests here in Sydney and in Melbourne as well.”

"Alternate Reality" Threatens Both Israel and Jewish Communities Around the World (Daled Amos)

Language is created by people. It's a reflection of both their times and their mindset.

No less an authority than Calvin & Hobbs pointed this out:


Calvin is right, the word "access" was originally only a noun.

Here is the entry for "access" in Webster's Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary -- from 1970:


Websters in 1970 defined "access" only as a noun, and then it defined "accessible" as "usable for access" or "easy of access" -- using "access" as a noun. The fact it defines "accessibility" as "easy of access" instead of "easy to access" is because there was no such thing as "to access" at the time. 

In time, possibly because of computers, "access" became a noun and a verb since it was more convenient to say "access" instead of "gain access."

But even Calvin stopped short of the whole truth. He said that "verbing weirds language." 
Actually, ideology "weirds" language too.

How long have we argued about the difference between militants and terrorists? This issue comes up when the media reports about Palestinians attacking Israeli civilians and trying to kill them. The media insists on calling these Palestinians "militants" instead of "terrorists." And no wonder. Unlike militants, terrorists target defenseless civilians while militants do not. 

A good example of this wordplay is the BBC. In the midst of the current war between Israel and Hamas, BBC has refused to call Hamas "terrorists," despite the Hamas massacre of 1,400 Israeli civilians and the over 200 hostages dragged back to Gaza:
The BBC has defended its decision not to describe Hamas militants as "terrorists" in coverage of the recent attacks in Israel.

UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said the policy is "verging on disgraceful".

A BBC spokesperson noted it was a long-standing position for its reporters not to use the term themselves unless attributing it to someone else.

Veteran BBC foreign correspondent John Simpson said "calling someone a terrorist means you're taking sides".
Pity the BBC. The term terrorist is decidedly negative so they felt they had to find another word -- because synonyms like assassin, bomber, fanatic, guerrilla, gunman, and hijacker didn't seem to reach the level of neutrality they needed to avoid tainting the Hamas name.

The BBC has recently dropped the use of 'militant' to describe Hamas attackers and instead is continuing to describe the group as a terrorist organisation proscribed by the UK Government and others.

The broadcaster's bosses had faced calls to review its editorial guidelines amid anger - including from Government ministers - at the corporation for not directly referring to Hamas as a terror organisation.

The guidelines state that journalists should not use the term terrorist without attribution - meaning it is permitted only when used by others - and that words such as 'bomber', 'attacker', 'gunman', 'kidnapper', 'insurgent' and 'militant' should be used to describe perpertrators.
According to BBC policy, they will use the T-word only for attribution, but not as a "judgment call." Yet the BBC had no problem describing other groups as terrorists:

Just 2 weeks ago, the BBC actually reported about a terror attack -- in Brussels:


The BBC has now dutifully wiped the headline so that it now reads, "Brussels shooting: 'Europe shaken' after two Swedes shot dead." The T-word is still used 5 times in the article -- twice while quoting an official and the other 3 times could arguably also be an attribution, each time without any qualification.

But this is part of a larger phenomenon we have been seeing in the US during the whitewashing of violence to support a political, ideological agenda.

In 2020, CNN was widely mocked for describing a riot as a 'fiery but mostly peaceful protest'
CNN national correspondent Omar Jimenez was reporting live in the early hours on Tuesday morning on the unrest that had taken place in Kenosha, Wis., following the police-involved shooting of Jacob Blake.

Jimenez was standing in front of a raging fire and the chyron at the bottom of the screen read, "FIERY BUT MOSTLY PEACEFUL PROTESTS AFTER POLICE SHOOTING."


MSNBC did something similar

NBC came out right into the open to clarify that NBC would not use the word "riot" to describe the reaction to George Floyd's murder:

NBC News came under scrutiny Thursday for allegedly telling its reporters to refer to the events in Minneapolis this week as "protests" and not "riots," according to one of its anchors.

Craig Melvin, an MSNBC host and co-anchor of "Today," shed some light as to how his network is framing its reporting. 

...Melvin's tweet raised eyebrows among critics who accused the network of downplaying the violence that took place in the city to protest the death of George Floyd.

"What kind of alternate reality is this where the mass looting and burning of businesses is not considered a riot by a news network? A protest is what we had here in LA last night. What’s happening in Minneapolis is the textbook definition of a riot. Protesters don’t loot. Period," local Fox affiliate reporter Bill Melugin tweeted.

The ability to whitewash riots, lootings and the burning of businesses as mere "protests" in defense of left-wing groups such as BLM established the precedence that violence and destruction could be excused and even covered up for a "righteous cause." It set the stage for our current "alternate reality" where people gloss over the Hamas massacres of 1,400 Israeli civilians and the kidnapping of over 200 by Hamas terrorists, and blame the victims.

Peggy Noonan writes about this "alternate reality" in the face of the Hamas massacre. She notes that while people who are middle-aged or older feel sympathy and loyalty towards Israel, the young see the situation in a completely different way. They feel antipathy, "sometimes accompanied by rage, sometimes by almost violent accusations against the colonialist oppressor state." This is more than seeing a righteous cause.

According to Noonan:

At the bottom of today’s progressive politics there is blood lust. They speak of justice and equity but that’s not what they want, they want dominance. It’s all about the will to power. Progressive students have absorbed the idea it’s good to be militant in your views, it shows you’re authentic. No, it shows you got the talking points. [emphasis added]

And now -- consistent with the whitewashing of BLM riots -- university students, armed with those talking points that Noonan mentioned, defend and praise terrorists while condemning their victims. These students are defended by university administrations and by many in the media. Protesters recite their mantra that Israel is an occupier and is therefore responsible for any "violence" committed by Hamas. They may be taking their cue from Francesca Albanese, who under the guise of a law degree, spreads her ideological hatred of Israel and admiration of Hamas and claims that Israel has no right to self-defense.

While Israel is in a battle to change the reality in Gaza, Jewish communities around the world face a rise in antisemitism that threatens to create a new reality of its own.
