From Ian:

Ben Shapiro: Lies and More Lies
So, the Iranians lied.

So did the Obama administration.

On April 30, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that in a stunning intelligence coup, the Israelis had somehow obtained 100,000 files from Iran’s secret atomic archive in Tehran. The files showed that Iran had ardently pursued nuclear weapons for years, lying about it all the while; that they had then failed to turn over the information showing the extent of their program during negotiations over the Barack Obama administration-pushed Iran deal; and that they had hidden those files in a secret warehouse with the obvious intent of reviving their nuclear program the minute they can get away with it.

According to Netanyahu, Iran “is brazenly lying when it says it never had a nuclear weapons program.” Furthermore, Netanyahu claimed that nuclear development “continued … in a series of organizations over the years, and today, in 2018, this work is carried out by SPND, that’s an organization inside Iran’s Defense Ministry.” The head of Iran’s earlier nuclear program currently heads the SPND.

Advocates for the Obama administration have come forward to contend that there’s nothing new here — that everyone knew Iran had been lying about its nuclear program. But when the deal was signed, Secretary of State John Kerry stated that Iran would have to disclose past military-related nuclear activities: “If there’s going to be a deal, it will be done. … It will be part of a final agreement.”

Other advocates say that Israel’s intelligence would be damaging to the Iran deal — but those nefarious Jews made it up. According to Tommy Vietor, former Obama National Security Council spokesman, “After years of bashing U.S. intelligence agencies for getting Iraq wrong, [Donald] Trump is now cooking up intel with the Israelis to push us closer to a conflict with Iran. A scandal hiding in plain sight.”
Caroline Glick: The Ayatollah's Archive Violates the Iran Deal
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s revelation Monday evening that Israel’s Mossad spy agency had seized Iran’s nuclear archive means that the ayatollahs have violated the nuclear deal negotiated by then-President Barack Obama, his EU partners, the Russians, and the Chinese in 2015.

Despite misleading claims by former Obama administration officials and their supporters in the liberal media that the material provided “nothing new,” the existence of the archive itself is a bombshell.

The intelligence Israel captured from a secret warehouse in Teheran includes more than half a ton of documents and computer files that detail the regime’s past work in developing all aspects of a nuclear arsenal. The archive was painstakingly preserved and transferred to a new secret location after Iran concluded the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), otherwise known as the Iran nuclear deal.

According to Ehud Yaari, Arab Affairs commentator for Israel’s Reshet television station, by archiving the material and so preserving Iran’s progress towards constructing nuclear weapons, Iran committed a material breach of the JCPOA.

Paragraph T of Annex 1 of the JCPOA is titled “Activities which could contribute to the design and development of a nuclear explosive device.”

Prelude to a Showdown?
Again, though, to focus on the intelligence Netanyahu revealed is to lose the plot. The exposure of an exceedingly complex operation that revealed these documents to the world is by itself an alarming development. According to the Israeli officials with whom Axios reporter Barak Ravid spoke, the Iranian nuclear archive was transferred to its covert home in February of 2016 explicitly to hide the military dimensions of its nuclear program from inspectors. The Israeli operation that uncovered that warehouse, which was known only to a small circle of Iranian officials, took years to prepare and involved hundreds of agents and informants. Exposing this operation has compromised all of those irreplaceable human assets and sacrificed a lot of invaluable collection capability. No government does that without performing a cost/benefit analysis. Either Israel concluded that making this operation public was worth the concrete policy objective that would be achieved by the reveal, or Netanyahu’s government determined that the value of its assets in Tehran was going to depreciate soon anyway as a result of events. And events are becoming rather ominous.

In as many months, Israel has executed three airstrikes on Iranian targets inside Syria. In February, Israel claimed to have shot down an Iranian drone originating in Syria that penetrated its airspace. In response to that incursion, the Israeli military targeted and destroyed four Iranian positions and an Iranian-operated command-and-control center from which the drone originated. One Israeli aircraft was shot down by Syrian anti-aircraft fire during that operation. In early April, Israel executed an airstrike on an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps post in Syria in which Iranian soldiers and Hezbollah were killed. And just days ago, Israel attacked two Iranian-linked bases inside Syria killing dozens of Iranian and Syrian fighters and igniting ammunition that resulted in several massive explosions. The tempo of Israeli operations is increasing and Americans sources say observers have every reason to fear the accelerating trend.

U.S. officials reportedly told NBC News that, within the last two weeks, Iran has stepped up deliveries of small arms and surface-to-air missiles to Syria as part of Tehran’s effort to “shore up Iranian ground forces and to strike at Israel.” The conspicuous reinforcement of Iranian soldiers, support staff, and weapons stockpiles might have led Israel to draw the gravest of conclusions. “The three U.S. officials said Israel now seems to be preparing for military action and is seeking U.S. help and support,” NBC News revealed.

The arguments among political factions within the United States regarding the Iran nuclear deal and various presidential legacies are peripheral to what may be the more immediate issue: the prospect of imminent hostilities between Israel and Iran, to say nothing of Tehran’s proxy forces in Syria, Lebanon, and Gaza. Seen in that light, Netanyahu’s decision to reveal the most eye-opening feat of spycraft in a generation is anything but a “nothing-burger.”

Michael Oren: 'Conduct of the Obama administration borders on criminal'
Deputy Minister Oren was also asked, as someone in constant contact with the US administration, how the people close to Obama and John Kerry relate to the exposure of the information that presents them as being deceived by the Iranians.

"They say that ‘we were not naive, we knew that the Iranians were lying, and that is why we need an agreement according to which inspectors can enter for the most intrusive visits,’ but there are some problems with their answer: Whoever looks at pictures from the agreement-signing ceremony in 2015 - everyone who signed there had a huge smile, and nobody smiled more than Mr. Kerry. It’s hard to imagine a situation in which they knew they were signing with a lying regime and were excited about the agreement, that they thought this agreement would change Iran’s behavior. They erred one hundred percent.”

Oren called to take a look at a map of the Middle East and see the territories occupied by the Iranians before and after the agreement, and identify "a difference of day and night."

"They occupied parts of the Middle East because of the agreement, with the money the Iranians received after the agreement and the legitimacy they received in the agreement," he said, adding: "This is huge damage that has cost hundreds of lives, and they are still smiling. Whoever signed this agreement, which expires in another seven years, acted with too much naivete. It borders on something criminal, not only regarding Israel and the Middle East, but regarding the entire world."

Oren also commented on PA Chairman Abbas’ statement according to which the Holocaust was not a result of the Jewishness of the Jews, but rather of their conduct.

He said that, following the remarks, Israel must “Greatly doubt whether this is a partner in any future context. I expect European condemnation. This is the same Europe that does not miss an opportunity to denounce us. The UN envoy who condemned us harshly for what’s happening in Gaza did not condemn Abbas’ most anti-Semitic statements at all."

"In the best case, Abbas said what he did as one who is old and not healthy, but in the worst case this is what he thought throughout the years, this is what he believes and this is his doctorate. His anti-Semitism is deeply entrenched in him, and the fact that the Palestinians didn’t stand up and condemn the statements also needs to concern us.”
Trump ‘all but decided’ to withdraw from Iran deal – report
US President Donald Trump has “all but decided” to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, but may not pull out completely, Reuters reported Thursday.

Two White House officials and a third source source told the news agency that the president would most likely end the waivers on the Iran sanctions on May 12 when they next come up for renewal. However, an official said it was possible that he would decide on a compromise that was “not a full pullout,” though it was unclear what form such a decision would take.

The source said Trump’s meeting last week with French President Emmanuel Macron may have pushed the president to remain in the deal somehow. Macron made a three-day state visit to Washington primarily to convince Trump to not leave the 2015 deal, negotiated between Tehran and six world powers.

Macron on Wednesday reiterated his commitment to the accord but admitted that it needed strengthening.

“I don’t know what the US president will decide on May 12,” Macron said during a visit to Sydney.

Britain, France and Germany — the three European countries that signed the deal — have repeatedly tried to persuade Trump not to abandon it.

A senior adviser to Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei announced Thursday that Iran will not remain in the deal if the US decides to pull out.
FM Zarif: Iran Will Not Renegotiate Nuclear Deal
Iran’s foreign minister said on Thursday that demands by US President Donald Trump to change Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers were unacceptable, as a deadline set by US for Europeans to “fix” the deal loomed.

Trump has said that unless European allies fix the “terrible flaws” in the Iran nuclear deal by May 12, he will refuse to extend US sanctions relief for oil-producing Iran.

“Iran will not renegotiate what was agreed years ago and has been implemented,” Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a video message posted on YouTube.

European signatories of the deal have been trying to persuade Trump to save the pact. They argue that Iran has been abiding by its terms, a position also taken by US intelligence assessments.

“Let me make it clear absolutely and once for all: we will neither outsource our security, nor will we renegotiate or add on to a deal we have already implemented in good faith,” Zarif said.
UN chief warns scrapping Iran nuclear deal could lead to war
nited Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned Thursday against scrapping the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, saying that doing so without presenting a good alternative could lead to war.

U.S. President Donald Trump has been threatening to pull out of the accord, leading to diplomatic tensions with Iran as well as with U.S. allies keen to preserve the agreement, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

The other signatories to the deal – Britain, Germany, France, Russia and China – have expressed support for keeping it in place. The former three, which have been trying to negotiate revisions to the accord with Iran, said that while the deal was not perfect, it was the best option currently available to prevent the Islamic republic from developing nuclear weapons.

Speaking with BBC Radio 4, Guterres said of the deal, "If one day there is a better agreement to replace it – it's fine, but we should not scrap it unless we have a good alternative.

"I believe JCPOA was an important diplomatic victory and I think it will be important to preserve it, but I also believe there are areas in which it will be very important to have a meaningful dialogue because I see the region in a very dangerous position," he said.
MEMRI: Iranian Officials Respond To West's Demands Regarding Its Missile Program: Our Missile Production 'Has Increased Threefold'; 'Our Defensive Capabilities Cannot Be Stopped Or Curbed'
According to reports in Western media, Britain, France, and Germany are agreeing with U.S. President Donald Trump that Iran's ballistic missile program and Iran's expansion in the region constitute a threat for the region and its security and stability.[1]

To date, Iran has firmly rejected the Western demands for discussion of its ballistic missile program, stating that it requires the program for self-defense – despite the fact that its missile's 2,000-km range is accepted by the international community as designated for offensive purposes. With regard to shorter-range missiles, Iran is denying any involvement in the provision of such missiles to the Houthi rebels in Yemen; with regard to its expansion in the region, it is claiming that its presence in Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon is aimed at protecting its own borders from the Islamic State (ISIS) threat.

On April 30, 2018, Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) deputy commander Gen. Hossein Salami reiterated this position at a ceremony for Iran's National Persian Gulf Day: "While the enemies threaten us and demand that we disarm, this demand is immoral, illogical, and ambitious. The missiles are [our] defensive capital, and [one of] the main foundations of our deterrent might. We will never agree to give up our defensive capability."[2] He added: "The Europeans must know that although there are sanctions on us, we will never disarm and lose the foundations of our might. We are the ones who have secured energy for them, and they must not play with our might. Iran is capable of defending its interests at every point. We have not long to go until we reach great heights. We have made our might largely immune to harm."[3]

In statements published several days after French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian's visit to Iran in early March 2018, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and IRGC commanders rejected out of hand the French official's demands for discussions on Iranian missiles and expansion.[4]
New York Times Offers a Theatrical Denunciation of Netanyahu’s Iran Speech
At least the White House corrected itself, which is more than can be said for the Times, which, at least as this article was filed, was still publishing uncorrected the news article and the editorial with the conflicting dates.

Not in the print newspaper, but only in Bret Stephens’ online column, does the Times get into the highly relevant matter of what happened in 2003. As Stephens put it: “They shelved much of their nuclear program in 2003 after the U.S. invaded Iraq.”

Aside from the date discrepancy, the editorial and the news article seem broadly on the same page, with the news article describing Prime Minister Netanyahu’s presentation as “dramatic” and “theatrical,” and the editorial also describing it as “theatrical.” What’s really theatrical is watching the Times editorial writers try to draw a moral equivalence between Iran’s behavior and that of Israel and the United States, with innuendos like “Iran isn’t the region’s only destabilizing force.” Come to think of it, the Times might try assigning its theater critics to cover the Iran issue. It’s hard to imagine they could do any worse than the current crew of editorial writers.
PreOccupiedTerritory: 100K Iran Nuke Files Said Not To Contain “No-Nukes” Fatwa Cited By Obama (satire)
Technical experts and translators processing the vast quantity of documents and other information on Iran’s nuclear program taken by Mossad agents from a Tehran warehouse in February have yet to come across a much-touted religious ruling that President Barack Obama and other American officials invoked in favor of the impending nuclear deal with the Ayatollahs’ regime, to the effect that pursuit or use of atomic weapons would violate Islamic tenets.

While Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu revealed the existence of the 100,000 files and the way in which they were obtained, experts have hesitated to comment on the significance of the information they contain, and even Israel’s internal manpower has yet to cover the entire trove, leaving open the possibility that the fatwa Obama and his secretary of state, John Kerry, cited does in fact exist outside the fantasies of Iran Deal advocates. Personnel involved in the processing of the files, however, deem it unlikely that the collection contains such a document.

“It’s really too early to tell,” admitted Hugh Briss, a defense consultant with ties to the Israeli team interpreting the files. “But let’s just say the focus of the documents lies more in the technical and military realm than in the religious. And by more, I mean no one I’ve spoken to involved in the work has encountered anything religious at all to this point. We’ll know for sure in a couple of months or so.”
David Horovitz: Who we are, why we’re here: Amid storm over Abbas’s comments, Israeli author explains Zionism to the Palestinians
For a slender volume, Yossi Klein Halevi’s “Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor” carries an extraordinary weight of responsibility.

The Jerusalem-based author and journalist spent 11 years writing his previous book, “Like Dreamers” — which told the story of Israel’s evolution after the Six Day War through the lives of seven paratroopers who fought to reunite Jerusalem. By contrast, Klein Halevi says, “Letters” spilled out of him in what felt like 11 weeks. It was a book waiting to be written, he believes, a book he had spent his 35 years in Israel — half the lifespan of the modern Jewish state — preparing to write.

Its goal is nothing less than to explain to our Palestinian neighbors — some of whom he can literally see out of the window of his home in northern Jerusalem’s French Hill neighborhood — who we Jews are and what we are doing here. With Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas working assiduously to delegitimize the Jews’ presence here, the imperative could hardly be more pressing.

In an earlier book, “At the Entrance to the Garden of Eden,” Klein Halevi spent time with Christians and, far more dramatically, with Muslims in the Holy Land, listening, learning and trying to understand them. With this new book, he hopes that they will listen to him.

Unprecedentedly, however, Klein Halevi, 64, does not envisage this volume as a one-way street. His declared goal is for the book, with its chapter-letters, to prompt a dialogue with these Palestinian neighbors of ours. Therefore, it is being translated into Arabic. It will be made available online — on The Times Of Israel’s Arabic website – for free downloading. The author hopes that Palestinians and others across the Arab and Muslim world will respond to it. If they write, he promises, he will respond in kind — initiating an ongoing conversation, enabling our conflicted sides to better understand each other, and, thus, one day, perhaps even to accept and live peaceably alongside each other.
When the NY Times says Abbas is no partner, something fundamental is shifting
When The New York Times editorializes that Abbas, by “feeding reprehensible anti-Semitic myths and conspiracy theories” has now “shed all credibility as a trustworthy partner,” something fundamental has patently begun to shift.

So why the caveat? Why does the fallout also have a partial downside for pro-Israel advocacy, known as hasbara?

Because defenders of Israel’s good name can no longer easily claim that the international community is hopelessly biased in favor of the Palestinians. The automatic Arab majority in UNESCO will still be there after this Abbas controversy fades from the headlines. The UN’s anti-Israel numerical bias won’t quickly be remade. But it will nevertheless be a little more difficult to argue that “everyone is instinctively against us” or that the Europeans have it in relentlessly for Jews and Israel.

In January, the EU refused to condemn Abbas for saying Israel was “a colonial project that has nothing to do with Judaism.”

“Our policy is not to comment on comments,” an EU spokesperson in Brussels told The Times of Israel at the time.

On Wednesday, by contrast, the EU denounced Abbas’s “unacceptable remarks concerning the origins of the Holocaust and Israel’s legitimacy.”

Apparently, Brussels’ policy is no longer not to comment on comments. Abbas’s rhetoric was too vicious to be left unremarked upon.

But that doesn’t mean Israel will be getting a free pass from now on. It means criticism of Israel from those many quarters that this week spoke out against Abbas might be a little harder to shrug off.
NY Times calls for Abbas ouster over ‘vile’ claim on Jews and Holocaust
The New York Times’ editorial board has called for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s ouster after he attributed the genocide of Jews during the Holocaust to their “social behavior” in what the US paper called a “vile speech” earlier this week.

In Wednesday’s editorial titled “Let Abbas’s vile words be his last as Palestinian leader,” the paper called his remarks “a new low,” even for a leader who has shown “anti-Semitic tendencies” in the past.

In an unusual rebuke of a foreign leader, the paper said Abbas’s remarks in front of hundreds at a rare session of the Palestinian National Council in Ramallah fueled anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and demonstrated that Israel does not have a trustworthy peace partner in the PA president. “Feeding reprehensible anti-Semitic myths and conspiracy theories,” it said, “Abbas shed all credibility as a trustworthy partner if the Palestinians and Israelis ever again have the nerve to try negotiations.”
NYT's Editorial: Let Abbas’s Vile Words Be His Last as Palestinian Leader
Since the last serious peace talks collapsed in 2014, Israel’s hard-line government has expanded settlement building to cover more of the land envisioned for a Palestinian state. Although President Trump promised a peace plan, none has materialized, but reports suggest it would favor Israel.

Arab nations, once the Palestinians’ patrons, have lost interest and have turned their attention to fighting wars in Yemen and Syria and checking Iran’s regional influence. During a recent meeting with Jewish-American leaders, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia faulted Palestinian leaders for complaining and rejecting past Israeli peace offers.

Mr. Abbas opposed Mr. Arafat during the 2000-2005 second intifada, recognized Israel, and committed himself to a nonviolent approach to negotiations for peace and a two-state solution. He was valued by the West as Mr. Arafat’s successor, and for years he has deployed Palestinian forces to help Israelis maintain security in the West Bank.

But pressures, some of his own making and many others caused by Israel, which has ultimate control over the West Bank, are building. Mr. Abbas, who oversees a governing system plagued by corruption and dysfunction, has lost support among the Palestinian people.

He has weakened government institutions that are essential for a future state and refused to call new elections, thus overstaying his term by many years and preventing younger leaders from emerging.

He has also failed to unify the Palestinians in the West Bank, where his Fatah faction dominates, with those in the even more desperate circumstances of the Gaza Strip, where Hamas holds sway.

Even in this gloomy climate, however, Mr. Abbas’s vile speech was a new low. No doubt he feels embittered and besieged on all sides. But by succumbing to such dark, corrosive instincts he showed that it is time for him to leave office.

Palestinians need a leader with energy, integrity and vision, one who might have a better chance of achieving Palestinian independence and enabling both peoples to live in peace.
Adviser: Abbas 'doesn't personally' believe remarks about European Jews
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas does not personally maintain that Jews were massacred in Europe for centuries because of their “social role related to usury and banks,” a senior Palestinian official said on Wednesday.

In a long speech on Monday in front of a top Palestine Liberation Organization body in Ramallah, Abbas said Jews were not killed in Europe over the years because of their religion, but rather “their social role related to usury and banks.” The PA president said he was referencing the writings of Karl Marx and two other Jewish authors.

“President Abbas does not personally hold that Jews were killed because of their social role related to banks. He was merely stating the opinion of Marx and other Jewish writers,” Mahmoud al-Habash, the PA president’s religious affairs adviser, told The Jerusalem Post.

When asked why Abbas made the statement, if he does not personally believe it, Habash said: “There are two narratives: One narrative is that Jews were killed because of their social role and another is they were killed because of their religion. We are not adopting either of these narratives, but rather leaving it to historians to determine the truth.”

When asked why Abbas only cited one of the “two narratives” for why Jews were killed in Europe, Habash repeated: “Abu Mazen is not stating his personal perspective, but rather a historical narrative that he has not adopted.”

Who do you think you are kidding, Mr Abbas?
Mahmoud Abbas has denied that pogroms occurred during the 14 centuries that Jewish communities existed in Arab countries. If he read Point of No Return he would be fully au fait with the true history.

Abbas's outrageous statement is of a piece with Abbas's Holocaut denial. His thesis as a PhD student in Moscow vastly minimised the numbers of Jews murdered by the Nazis. The Zionists' Ha'avara agreeement to rescue Jews from Hitler's Germany in the 1930s is maliciously construed as 'collaboration' with Nazism.

Haaretz reports: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Monday that Jews in Europe were exposed to pogroms not because of their religion, but because of their social role and financial matters.
Speaking during the National Palestinian Council in Ramallah, Abbas attributed the claim to Jewish scholars and said that factually, "such pogroms did not take place in Arab nations, which had Jewish communities."
Abbas stirred controversy in his doctoral thesis in Moscow University when he examined connections between the Zionist leadership in Israel and the Nazi regime in the 1930s. In it he dealt with the claims of Holocaust deniers such as Roger Garaudy regarding the correct number of Jewish deaths in the Holocaust. Israeli officials have dubbed Abbas a Holocaust denier, but he has refuted the accusation.
France, Britain blast Abbas for anti-Semitic speech
The United Kingdom and France joined Israel and much of the international community in condemning a speech by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas that claimed the Holocaust was the result of Jews’ own “social behavior” and financial conduct rather than anti-Semitism.

While stressing Abbas’s role in peace negotiations, UK’s Middle East Minister Alistair Burt said the speech did not help his own people.

“President Abbas has shown a commitment to non-violence and a two-state solution,” Burt said in a statement. “But his recent rhetoric does not serve the interests of the Palestinian people and is deeply unhelpful to the cause of peace.”

The minister said a hoped-for peace deal could not be based on denying history.

“At a highly sensitive time in the region, when we must all look forwards and work urgently towards a resolution of the longstanding issues between Israel and the Palestinian people, the fundamentals of peace cannot be built on views of the Holocaust which fly in the face of history,” he said.

During his long-winded speech Monday in front of hundreds at a rare session of the Palestinian National Council in Ramallah, the 82-year-old PA leader alleged that the Holocaust was not caused by anti-Semitism, but rather by Jews’ “social behavior, [charging] interest, and financial matters.”

Though he stopped short of calling the speech anti-Semitic, as some other leaders had done, Burt said that it was unacceptable to try and justify the Holocaust.
Yad Vashem blasts Abbas for anti-Semitic bid to blame Jews for their own murder
Israel’s Holocaust memorial museum in Jerusalem, Yad Vashem, on Wednesday lambasted Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas for the “distorted” history lesson in which he said the Holocaust was caused not by anti-Semitism, but by the behavior of Jews who worked in banking and money lending.

“Sadly, Abbas has chosen to assault Holocaust remembrance by attempting to convert the Shoah into a propaganda tool, blatantly falsifying history to the point of accusing the Jewish victims as being responsible for their own murder, and transforming Hitler into a Zionist,” Yad Vashem said in a statement.

“His own argument is itself fundamentally anti-Semitic, insofar as it incorporates a centuries-old anti-Semitic narrative that equates Jews with monetary greed,” the statement said, adding that Abbas should study history instead of trying to give history lessons.

“Even basic acquaintance with Jewish history would teach Abbas not only that the Jews pursued, then and now, a wide variety of professions and occupations, but that the majority of them at that time were impoverished. Even basic acquaintance with European history would inform Abbas about the escalation of anti-Semitism throughout Europe during the second half of the 19th century and the start of the 20th, and that this was in effect the prime context for the murder of Jews during the Holocaust,” it said.
THORNBERRY PRESENT AT ABBAS JEW HATE SPEECH
Emily Thornberry attended the Mahmoud Abbas speech which made global headlines this week for its anti-Semitic content, Guido can reveal. Thornberry was representing Labour at the Palestinian National Council (PNC) meeting in Ramallah. The Shadow Foreign Secretary confirmed her attendance in a Facebook post published after Abbas’ speech. Her statement did not reference Abbas’ anti-Semitic comments…

Abbas delivered a rambling speech in which he claimed the Holocaust was not caused by anti-Semitism but by Jewish “social behaviour, [charging] interest, and financial matters.” In highly offensive comments, Abbas said:
“But why did this use to happen… They say, “It is because we are Jews”. I will bring you three Jews, with three books who say that enmity towards Jews was not because of their religious identity but because of their social function. This is a different issue. So the Jewish question that was widespread throughout Europe was not against their religion but against their social function which relates to usury [unscrupulous money-lending] and banking and such.”

Rather than reference the remarks or condemn Abbas in her initial statement, Thornberry instead said:
“While we of course want to see the resumption of meaningful peace talks, I said President Abbas had been quite right to argue that the Trump administration cannot act as a mediator for peace when they themselves are sowing the seeds of discord, and making a negotiated peace ever harder to achieve...”
UK Labour’s pick for top diplomat would consider arms embargo against Israel
The UK’s would-be next top diplomat this week called for a review of her country’s arms sales to Israel to ensure Jerusalem would not use British weapons “to attack innocent Palestinian civilians.”

Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry, who attended the Palestinian National Council summit in Ramallah this week, also reiterated her vow that the the next Labour government would “without delay” recognize a Palestinian state.

Writing on Facebook, Thornberry promised the Palestinian leadership the support of her party and made “three solemn guarantees” of steps a new Labour government would take “as soon” as it comes into office.

“First, as we rightly mark this month the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the State of Israel, I said it is also right — and long overdue — for the United Kingdom to formally recognise the State of Palestine, and urge other countries to do the same, not in due course, not when the time is right, but now and without delay,” she wrote.

Secondly, she vowed her party would host an “international funding conference to address the humanitarian needs of the Palestinian people” and Palestinian refugees across the Middle East. This was necessary to make up for the funds the US administration has withheld from the United Nations agency responsible for Palestinian refugees.
NGO Monitor: NGO Proposals Would Endanger More Lives
On April 30, the Israeli Supreme Court held a hearing on two petitions from NGOs claiming that Israel’s responses to violence along the Gaza border are illegal and demanding that the Court prohibit the use of live ammunition by the IDF.

In a response filed with the Court, the Israeli government demonstrated that the six NGOs – Yesh Din, ACRI, Gisha, HaMoked, Adalah, and Al Mezan – are misrepresenting the situation along the border, misrepresenting the applicable international legal framework, and recommending steps that would actually result in more Palestinian casualties. In other words, the NGO network is once again inventing claims to bash Israel.
NGO Monitor: So you can’t go to jail for throwing stones in Canada, eh?
On April 26, 2018, Defense for Children International – Palestine’s (DCI-P) International Advocacy Officer Brad Parker spoke in Ottawa. Alongside UN Special Rapporteur Michael Lynk and leader of the Green Party of Canada Elizabeth May, the event “Rights under Endless Occupation: Israel/Palestine Discussion,” was hosted by the Mennonite Central Committee and the United Church of Canada.

Parker’s presentation repeated the false claims and methodological flaws that are typical of DCI-P’s advocacy and reports (see NGO Monitor’s “No Way to Represent a Child: Defense for Children International – Palestine’s Distortions of the Israeli Justice System”).

At one point, Parker outright lied to the audience. He described a theoretical scenario where he threw a rock at a car as it is driving, thereby breaking its window. Parker stated that he “might” get arrested, and proceeds to ask the audience if he would go to jail. The audience remained largely silent, so Parker answered for them, with “no.”

In contrast to Parker’s statements and his minimization of violence, according to Canada’s Criminal Code (430(2)), “Every one who commits mischief that causes actual danger to life is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for life” (emphasis added). Indeed, there are numerous cases in Canada where both minors and adults have thrown stones and been charged with “mischief endangering life,” and therefore faced this maximum sentence.
Kite Carrying Incendiary Device From Gaza Sets Off Major Fire in Israel’s South
A major fire was set off in southern Israel on Wednesday, caused by an incendiary device attached to a kite flown across the border from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

This is the latest of several such attacks. They are part of the ongoing “March of Return,” a series of violent riots orchestrated by Hamas on the Israel-Gaza border.

There have been over a dozen previous attempts at using kites to deliver incendiary devices, causing millions of shekels worth of damage, but no major fires. On Wednesday, however, three such kites caused a serious blaze in the Beeri Forest in southern Israel.

Two heads of local councils, Shai Hagig and Tamir Eidan, reacted to the fire with outrage over the continuing violence on the border.

PMW: 14 Members of Congress call to stop aid to PA, citing PMW documentation
Last week, Palestinian Media Watch sent a report to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo with copies to members of Congress documenting that the Palestinian Authority had failed to implement the four conditions demanded by the Taylor Force Act, and thus were ineligible for further American funding.

Following PMW's report, 14 members of Congress sent a letter to the Secretary of State citing the documentation in PMW's report, and concluding: "... we urge you to immediately suspend all aid payments to the Palestinian Authority." [Washington Free Beacon, May 1, 2018]

PMW's report exposed that the Palestinian Authority budget for 2018 includes payments to terrorists and the families of so-called "Martyrs." PMW's report also included the following statement by PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas explicitly rejecting America's demands to stop paying salaries to terrorist prisoners:
The end of the peace process
On the eve of the transfer of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, the Palestinian National Council, the legislative body of the Palestine Liberation Organization, in other words, the organization for the liberation of the Land of Israel, convened for its 23rd session in Ramallah. Grown men in suits listened to the don, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas spew anti-Semitic lies, fabricate history and deliver empty promises.

According to Abbas, the Palestinian coffin was nailed shut as a result of the split with and corruption of Hamas, the Arab states' abandonment of the Palestinians, Israel's strength and the U.S.'s traitorous rejection of the Palestinian demands for a "right of return" and Jerusalem. The only thing that remains for Abbas to do is claim a chapter in the Quran commands the Palestinians wait patiently alongside the borders of Palestine. Let them wait, because the same Quran promises this land to the Jewish people, and that is why we are therefore the actual owners.

According to Abbas, Ashkenazi Jews are descended from the Khazars, a people who existed hundreds of years ago somewhere between Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and therefore have no connection to Palestine. The Palestinians are the chosen Canaanite people who will remain parked outside Palestine until their victory is achieved. Israel was established on an imperial whim and as part of a conspiracy to thwart the Arab power that threatens Europe. The Jews collaborated with Nazi leader Adolf Hitler to arrive in Palestine, just as Israel's first Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion brought Jews from Arab states to Palestine, even though they enjoyed pleasant and pogrom-free lives under the auspices of Islam.

As far as Abbas is concerned, the transfer of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, the draining of the abscess of the "eternal Palestinian refugees" and the closure of the U.N.'s agency for Palestinian refugees, which so maliciously perpetuates the problem, has turned the deal of the century into the slap of the century. Abbas' response has been to engage in efforts to provide international legitimacy to the Palestinians and a legal campaign against Israel.
Israel to Russia: We Sat Out Western Sanctions, so Help Us in Middle East
Israel’s defense minister reminded Russia on Thursday of his government’s decision not to join Western sanctions against it, and asked that Moscow reciprocate with a more pro-Israel approach to Syria and Iran.

Avigdor Lieberman’s appeal followed Russia’s rare calling out of Israel over an April 9 air strike in Syria, and came as US President Donald Trump mulls scrapping the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal by May 12, a review opposed by Moscow.

“We value these relations with Russia,” Lieberman said in an interview with the Russian newspaper Kommersant.

“Even when our close partners pressured us, as in the case of sanctions against Russia, we did not join them,” he said, alluding to Western powers that clashed with Moscow over the Crimea crisis and the poisoning of a Russian ex-spy in Britain.

“A lot of countries have recently expelled Russian diplomats. Israel did not join in this action,” he added.

“We take Russia’s interests into account and we hope that Russia will take into account our interests, here in the Middle East. We expect Russia’s understanding and support when it comes to our vital interests.”
WATCH: Secretary Of State Mike Pompeo Talks About Moving U.S. Embassy To Jerusalem
On Wednesday, Mike Pompeo was sworn in as Secretary of State, replacing Rex Tillerson. During the ceremony, Pompeo reaffirmed the Trump administration’s plans to move the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem very soon:

We are but 15 months into this administration and we've already made outstanding progress by speaking the truth about the challenges we face, by confronting them head on, by partnering with strong, sovereign, independent nations to make America and the world more prosperous and secure.

We put hurt on the ISIS caliphate in Iraq and Syria. We've done so by great, diplomatic work. We're confronting all types of Iranian hostility and are deciding on the next steps for the flawed JCPOA [Iran Nuclear Agreement]. We have imposed real consequences on Russia for its acts of aggression, and we will soon move our embassy in Israel to Jerusalem years ahead of schedule.

EXCLUSIVE - New York Democrat Assemblyman Gives Trump ‘A-Triple-Plus’ Rating on Israel
Longtime Brooklyn Assemblyman Dov Hikind, a Democrat, rated President Trump “a-triple-plus” for his administration’s policies toward Israel and relationship with the Jewish state.

“I rate him a-triple-plus,” said Hikind. “When it comes to Israel, this administration, the Trump administration has been remarkable. You know, Aaron, it doesn’t get any better.”

Hikind was speaking in an interview on this reporter’s talk radio program, “Aaron Klein Investigative Radio” broadcast on New York’s AM 970 The Answer and NewsTalk 990 AM.

Hikind praised Trump’s historic decision to relocate the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and the administration’s steadfast support for the Jewish state amid Hamas-instigated border riots targeting Israel from the Gaza Strip.

Stated Hikind: “When it comes to moving the embassy every president has promised this and they knew when they were promising it that they were lying to everybody. So whatever you want to say about Trump, the fact is he made a commitment. He has kept that commitment and that is extraordinary.”
Shin Bet: Palestinian student leader received €150k for Hamas through Turkey
A Palestinian student leader arrested in March in a daylight raid by Israeli commando forces is suspected of illegally receiving hundreds of thousands of euros from Hamas operatives in Turkey to promote the terror group’s activities at a university near Ramallah, the Shin Bet security service said Thursday.

The student, 24-year-old Omar al-Kiswani from the West Bank village of Beit Iksa, is a member of Hamas’s student faction at Birzeit University and the head of the student council.

“It is another expression of the efforts by Hamas command centers in Turkey and the Gaza Strip to accelerate the activity” of the terrorist group in the West Bank, the Shin Bet said, adding that “the investigation’s findings tell us of the deep involvement” of the overseas Hamas members.

The Shin Bet said that Kiswani had contacted Yassin Rabia, a Hamas member who had formerly been jailed by Israel until he was freed and deported to the Gaza Strip in a 2011 prisoner swap deal. More than a thousand Palestinians convicted for terror offenses were released in the exchange for IDF soldier Gilad Shalit.
Arab-Israeli Poet Dareen Tatour convicted of incitement to violence
Arab-Israeli poet Dareen Tatour was found guilty of incitement to violence and support for a terror organization for poems and comments posted to social media in a decision handed down by the Nazareth Magistrate's Court Thursday morning.

The two-year-seven-month legal and literary saga, which has garnered international attention, has become a battleground for debates over free speech, discrimination and relations between Israel's Jewish majority and its Arab minority.

"I never expected justice from the Israeli courts," Tatour said in response to the verdict. "I knew that I would be convicted of the accusations... I will write and write and keep writing."

Tatour, 37, is an Israeli citizen from the village of Reineh in the north of Israel. She was indicted November 2, 2015 for pictures and poems posted to Facebook and YouTube, and has since been held in full detention and under house arrest. Tatour is one of the few Israelis who have been convicted for their social media activity.

In October 2015, she posted a Youtube video of her reading her poem "Resist my People, Resist Them," accompanied by pictures of Palestinians clashing with Israeli security forces.
A Jewish member of the Palestinian Authority?
The Palestinian Authority (PA) is attempting to push back against criticism of President Mahmoud Abbas' comments blaming the Jews for the Holocaust by showcasing Jewish members of Palestinian National Council.

According to the official Palestinian Authority news agency Wafa, "a member of the Palestinian National Council, Uri Davis, who is Jewish, sits with his council members, including Christians and Muslims, to discuss issues of interest to their Palestinian people."

The article continued to say that Davis "is a Palestinian belonging to a Jewish religion and will continue to work for liberating Palestine and achieving its independence from the occupation embodied in Zionism, which has no connection to the Jewish religion because it is a religion that opposes the occupation. "

Uri Davis had converted to Islam back in 2008 and married a 50-year-old Fatah activist in Ramallah. His heavily publicized wedding was attended by Abbas and other PA officials.
Turks, Saudis, UAE said to pump quarter billion dollars into East Jerusalem
Less than two weeks away from the scheduled transfer of the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are pumping a quarter of a billion dollars into the Islamic Waqf and a slew of Muslim organizations in East Jerusalem, Hadashot news reported Wednesday.

The Waqf (Muslim Trust) administers the Temple Mount, home to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam’s third holiest shrine, as well as a slew of schools, orphanages, Islamic libraries, Islamic courts and other properties. The mount is the holiest place in Judaism as the site of the ancient temples. Israel maintains overall security control at the site.

The three countries are describing the move as an act of “rescue” to finance renovations at holy sites, but Israeli officials fear their involvement will go beyond money and could spark violence in the run-up to the ribbon-cutting on May 14, the TV report said.

On Sunday, Hadashot News reported that US President Donald Trump was looking increasingly likely to come to the ceremony and was mulling allowing convicted American spy Jonathan Pollard to come too by lifting restrictions that prevent him from travelling to Israel.
JCPA: A Rare Meeting of the Palestinian National Council
Sources among the participants of the gathering reported that Abbas’ speech was surprising because instead of mentioning Yasser Arafat as the source of inspiration and authority for the PLO, he emphasized the roles of Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Mufti of Jerusalem, and Ahmad al-Shukeiri, founder of the PLO in the years when Fatah was not part of the organization.

When talking about the PLO’s past struggles, Abbas omitted to mention the part of Abu Jihad, the founder of the PLO’s fighting doctrine.

In the corridors, the discussions on the main issues bothering the representatives focused on the collapse of the PLO’s importance, the Palestinian problem in the face of events in the Arab world, and concern over the position of Saudi Arabia under Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.

Some of the representatives reported that the opening of the meeting was delayed several hours because not all of the guests who were invited had arrived at the hall. However, the delay led to conjecture over the health of Mahmoud Abbas.

In the end, the PNC meeting opened at precisely the same time Prime Minister Netanyahu revealed the Iranian archives to the world. For this reason, the Arab TV stations, including Al-Jazeera, preferred to broadcast from Tel Aviv instead of Ramallah that evening. (h/t Elder of Lobby)
Anger as Palestinian Authority cuts Gaza salaries and pays late
The Palestinian Authority cut salaries for its staff in Gaza by 20 percent on Thursday and failed to make up for skipping the previous month's pay, leaving civil servants in the impoverished territory fuming they were pawns in a factional power struggle.

Some 38,000 civil servants in the Gaza Strip learned of the new disruptions to their incomes upon arriving at their banks on payday, intent on withdrawing cash ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which begins on May 16.

Last month, they were not paid at all. Many were hoping for two months pay this month, but instead received a reduced rate of a single month's pay, with no explanation.

PA salaries in the other Palestinian territory, the West Bank, were paid in full.

Islamist group Hamas seized control of Gaza from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in 2007, prompting Israel and Egypt to clamp down on the territory, where two million people live with the world's highest unemployment rate.

Hanna Amira, a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO),  told the official Voice of Palestine radio on Thursday morning that Abbas' speech to the National Assembly "is a historical account of the facts, which was corroborated by some Jewish historians."

This includes the disproven "Khazar" theory and Abbas' noxious claim that Jews' behavior is what has caused antisemitism.

Fayez Rashid, writing in Al Watan, supported Abbas' words about Jews as well, saying that they were historical facts supported by Jews like Ilan Pappe. He is no Fatah flunky though - the bulk of his article criticized the rest of Abbas' speech.

The condemnations of Abbas' antisemitism by the UN and Israel were covered extensively in Arabic language media over the past day.

As usual, one needs to look at what they don't say as well as what they do.  I did not find a single Arabic-language media source that condemned or even chided Abbas for his absurd and offensive statement about Jews. The tone of the articles is more along the lines of how pro-Jewish the West is by making a big deal over Abbas' words.

This incident is not just an indictment of Abbas' Jew-hatred. The complete lack of condemnation, and the tacit support offered by some, shows that antisemitism is a fundamental part of the Arab worldview.

The main mantra in support of the Iranian nuclear deal has always been - and continues to be - that the deal includes "the most intrusive inspections regime ever negotiated." The logic is that Iran can't possibly be working on a parallel and secret nuclear weapons program while opening up (some of) its nuclear facilities to IAEA inspectors.

The New York Times reports:
Israel is not finished with its lobbying campaign. Officials there said they planned to share much of the data they had harvested from the secret archive with the International Atomic Energy Agency — including data on some previously unknown nuclear sites in Iran.
If there are previously unknown nuclear sites in Iran that the IAEA itself is unaware of, then doesn't that prove that the current inspections regime is literally worthless?

Yet the NYT downplays the importance of such a discovery:
Israel’s intention appears to be to force the organization, a United Nations agency, to demand that the Iranians allow inspections of those sites, even though some of them may have been closed or dismantled years ago. Since Iran considers many of these military sites, the Israelis, and some American officials, expect the Iranians to balk at the demand — inciting another crisis for the deal.
Instead of noting that the existence of secret nuclear facilities is a huge red flag, the NYT throws up a smokescreen of claiming - with no knowledge - that many of these facilities may have been dismantled years ago.

And also it mentions in passing that Iran refuses to allow inspections of suspected nuclear research sites that Iran classifies as "military" - which was a huge red flag to the entire JCPOA plan when it was agreed upon, and also swept under the rug.

If Iran balks at a demand to allow inspections, then - the NYT logic goes - such inspections are better left undone. Otherwise, there could be a crisis!

What kind of logic is this?
“The Israeli prime minister’s presentation on Iran’s past research into nuclear weapons technology underlines the importance of keeping the Iran nuclear deal’s constraints on Tehran’s nuclear ambitions,” the British foreign secretary, Boris Johnson, said in a statement. “The Iran nuclear deal is not based on trust about Iran’s intentions; rather it is based on tough verification.”
How is "tough verification" possible when the IAEA doesn't even know all the sites to inspect?

All of the people who defend the Iran deal based on these "tough verification" should be at the forefront of insisting that Iran come clean about their secret nuclear facilities.

Their silence in the wake of Israel's intelligence coup - indeed, their derision of it - shows that for all their posturing about how wonderful the deal is, their intent is not to stop an Iranian bomb as they claim, but to mindlessly defend the indefensible.

The best summary of how absurd this "inspections regime" is can be found in this tweet: "Basically, with advance notice the cop is allowed to pull the car over to search for contraband, except it's forbidden to search the glove compartment."

The new Mossad revelations takes this analogy further - the cops aren't allowed to inspect the huge trailer behind the car either, since it isn't defined as being part of the car.

The PFLP terror group issued a statement about how bad things are in Gaza.

Unlike Western reports that automatically blame everything on Israel, this Arabic statement accurately places the blame on the party that is responsible - the Palestinian Authority.
The Palestinian Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) warned Thursday that continued punitive measures against the Gaza Strip could cause a total collapse of the Gaza Strip.

The Front stressed in a press statement that the continuation of the measures against the Gaza Strip and the failure of the PA and the Accordance Government to respond to the national and popular appeals against imposing more punitive measures, culminating in the blackmail exercise exercised by the Authority against its employees in Gaza from the date of the last month's salary until yesterday, ...This could cause a total collapse of the sector, which would a fertile environment for the implementation of [Trump's] deal of the century.

The Front considered that the continued manipulation of the lives of our children and the enjoyment of the suffering of our people through the imposition of further punitive measures is a crime that runs counter to the Palestinian Basic Law, international and humanitarian law, and strengthens the state of division and schism in the Palestinian arena.

The Front called on the masses of our people, national and Islamic forces, civil society organizations, national and national figures and all sectors of our people to unite behind a progressive struggle program that adopts resolute measures to confront these measures and pressure to stop them immediately.
The PFLP is not exactly Zionist. But they see the situation in Gaza and who is responsible - not Israel's "blockade." The PA has been systematically cutting services to Gaza for over a year now and the Western press rarely reports about it, because Arabs are expected to act with callous disregard to other Arab lives.

child
Suja'iyya, Gaza Strip, May 2 - A local couple fell into fierce argument this evening, neighbors report, over whether their preschool-aged child is old enough to participate in violence against Israel, with the father insisting the boys can serve as a human shield at any age, and the mother retorting that no offspring of hers is going to join the Great Return March unless he has grown enough to hurl firebombs the distance necessary to kill a Jew.

Residents in the apartment adjacent that of Ali and Buthayna Hussein related Wednesday that despite agreeing on the value of violent confrontation with the Zionists and on making the latter look bad by placing children in harm's way and blaming Israel for the resulting casualties, the couple differs on the weight each tactic carries in practice. Those differences, note the neighbors, sparked the third such voluble exchange between Ali and Buthayna since the current wave of protests along the border with Israel began several weeks ago.

"Ali is six years older than Buthayna, but she can hold her own in an argument with him," observed Ahmad, who lives next door and is a second cousin to each half of the couple. "Just because he's in Hamas, that doesn't intimidate her - she knows where the glory is, and she's not going to settle for some indirect martyrdom for her baby when not so long from now, little Yahya will be big enough to kill Jews or die in the attempt, which is much more honorable."

"Yeah but we need him as a shahid now," countered Wafa, another neighbor, echoing Ali's contentions. "You can't just wait until Yahya grows up to become another bomb engineer instrumental in killing dozens of Jews on buses, like his namesake Yahya Ayyash. These are desperate times, when the world has begun to care about people other than Palestinians, and someone's got to step up to reassert our proper place atop the headlines. If that means stepping in front of a rock-throwing, fence-cutting, or firebomb-hurling compatriot to take a bullet, so be it."

"Buthayna has dreams," responded Fadi, another resident of the neighborhood who overheard the Husseins' argument. "It's insensitive to her to demand Yahya die as a human shield - there are literally tens of thousands of other babies and toddlers in this area whose parents would be more than happy to sacrifice them for this cause. Leave Buthayna alone and let her continue raising the boy to become a full-fledged mujahid."

From Ian:

Bret Stephens: The Iran Deal Is a Lie
“The sanctions lifting will only occur as Iran takes the steps agreed, including addressing possible military dimensions.”

That was State Department spokesman John Kirby in June 2015, speaking just as negotiations for the Iran nuclear deal were wrapping up. But Tehran did not “take the steps agreed.” The deal was founded on a lie.

Two lies, actually. The first was Iran’s declaration to the International Atomic Energy Agency, prior to the implementation of the deal, of the full extent of its past nuclear work. This was essential, both as a test of Tehran’s sincerity and as a benchmark for understanding just how close it was to being able to assemble and deliver a nuclear warhead.

The second lie was the Obama administration’s promise that it was serious about getting answers from Tehran. In a moment of candor, then-Secretary of State John Kerry admitted “we are not fixated on Iran specifically accounting for what they did at one point in time or another” — but then he promised Congress that Iran would provide the accounting.

That was when the White House still feared that Congress might block the deal. When it failed to do so, thanks to a Democratic filibuster, the administration contented itself with a make-believe process in which Iran pretended to make a full declaration and the rest of the world pretended to believe it.

“Iran’s answers and explanations for many of the I.A.E.A.’s concerns were, at best, partial, but over all, obfuscating and stonewalling,” David Albright and his colleagues at the nonpartisan Institute for Science and International Security wrote in December 2015. “Needed access to sites was either denied or tightly controlled as to preclude adequate inspections.”

So much, then, for all the palaver about the deal providing an unprecedented level of transparency for monitoring Iranian compliance. So much, also, for the notion that Iran has honored its end of the bargain. It didn’t. This should render the agreement null and void.

Khaled Abu Toameh: Palestinians: The Real Gaza Blockade
Recently, the ّIslamic and National Forces, a group of Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip, called on Egyptian President Abed Al-Fattah Sissi to open the border crossing to allow wounded Palestinians from Gaza to receive medical treatment in Egyptian and Arab hospitals. Again, ostensibly for "security reasons," their appeal was completely ignored. Emad Al-Agha, a member of the ّIslamic and National Forces group, said there are intensive contacts with the Egyptian authorities to pressure Cairo to open the border crossing for "humanitarian" reasons.

Reports about the suffering of Palestinian travelers at the Gaza-Egyptian border crossing fill Palestinian media outlets, but these reports are almost entirely ignored by the mainstream media in the West. Western journalists are well aware of the Egyptian border closure, but as Israel is not involved, the reporters and their editors do not really care.

Thousands of Palestinians converge on the terminal between Gaza and Egypt whenever there is a rumor that it might be opened. Some wait there for days with their luggage and are forced to sleep out in the open. Some Palestinians are required to pay bribes to Hamas and Egyptian officials to obtain permits to leave the Gaza Strip through the terminal. A Facebook page entitled "The Rafah Border Crossing - Endless Suffering" shows dozens of examples of the humiliation the passengers experience there.

Like most Arab countries, Egypt cares nothing about the Palestinians, especially those living in the Gaza Strip. From the point of view of the Arab states, the Palestinians are Israel's problem alone. Yet Egypt is sending Palestinians to knock on Israel's door and blame Israel for the "humanitarian" crisis in the Gaza Strip, while it is really Egypt that is responsible for the blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Arab and Egyptian hypocrisy achieves new heights as journalists from these "countries create "fake news" echo chamber reporting on the "'March of Return" and use it to condemn Israel for sealing its border with the Gaza Strip. When will the real blockade of the Gaza Strip, the Egyptian one, be called out and condemned in the mainstream media?
Iran ordered to pay billions to families of victims of 9/11 terror attacks
By court order, Iran is to pay billions of dollars to the families of the September 11 terror attacks, The Hill reported on Tuesday evening.

US District Judge George Daniels ruled that the Islamic Republic and other institutions must pay $12.5 million per spouse, $8.5 million per parent, $8.5 million per child and $4.25 million per sibling killed in the incident, according to the report.

The lawsuit was first filed in 2004 and was joined by families of the over 1,000 victims of the attack. It accused Iran, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran for aiding the 2001 hijackers although the 9/11 Commission never found direct evidence for Iran's involvement.

The lawsuit was only able to proceed in 2016, when Congress passed the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act, permitting the families of the victims to sue state actors for the terror attacks. Then-President Barack Obama had vetoed the law, arguing it could set a dangerous precedent but Congress overrode that veto.

According to the report, the ruling will probably turn out to be largely symbolic, as Iran is very unlikely to ever pay the damages, which in total amount to 6 billion dollars. There would be no feasible way to force the Islamic Republic, which never even responded to the lawsuit, to make the payment.

Amb. Dore Gold: Netanyahu's Wake-Up Call to the World on the Iranian Nuclear Program
Revelations over the last ten years have left little doubt that Tehran was seeking a nuclear weapon, no matter what its spokesmen claimed. But the revelations put forward by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on April 30 came from original official documents with the stamp of the Iranian regime.

It can now be stated without any qualification that Iran had a nuclear weapons program. The whole Iran nuclear agreement (JCPOA), consequently, had been negotiated under false pretenses.

During the talks on the Iran deal, Iranian negotiators falsely assured the West that Iran did not seek a nuclear arsenal because there was a fatwa, an Islamic legal ruling, forbidding the development of atomic weapons that had been issued by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Both President Obama and Secretary of State Kerry spoke about the Iranian fatwa. Now this has been shown to be plainly false.

There is a huge difference in holding negotiations with a state like Iran if you assume it has no intention of building nuclear weapons versus a situation in which you have incontrovertible evidence that Iran is determined to become a nuclear power. The substance of an agreement will be very different.

While there is some debate over what clauses Iran violated in the JCPOA, a very strong case can be made to the effect that, given the Israeli revelation, Iran unquestionably violated the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty of 1970.

A different approach is needed. In the nuclear realm, the verification regime must look very different for a state which has had an unquestionable goal of arming itself with nuclear weapons and delivery systems for them.

For this reason, the JCPOA must be completely revamped or scrapped. This is not a case of "trust but verify," the adage used by President Ronald Reagan. It is a case of don't trust and verify with the most intrusive means you have.
JPost Editorial: IRAN LIED
Iran’s nuclear weapons program is part of its larger strategic drive for regional hegemony.

In Iraq, the ayatollahs have also watched as the seeds of Shi’ite militias they planted in the 1980s have grown up to now dominate the Interior Ministry in Baghdad, cementing militia influence on the centers of power.

In Lebanon, Iran has Hezbollah, which is running openly and armed in the election scheduled for this coming Sunday.

In Yemen, the Houthi rebels use Iranian know-how to equip ballistic missiles they fire at Riyadh.

In the Gaza Strip, Iran seeks to empower Hamas, and in the Gulf, Iran wants to pull Qatar away from the West.

Iran is seeking to control the region at the point of a gun, while talking about peace.

What Netanyahu showed is that the regime in Tehran has never had peaceful intentions; it has always been working toward nuclear weapons. Sometimes that work is put on hold while Iran arms its militias, but always it is waiting in the vault, poised to reemerge.

Israel has now shed a light inside that vault. There are those that say it is irrefutable evidence that the nuclear deal must be “fixed or nixed,” while others say that it only provides more reason to keep the deal intact in order to keep a closer watch on the Iranian regime.

It is up to Trump to decide next week what to do with this information.

The Short And Ugly History Of The Disastrous Iran Deal
Once it is released from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2025, Tehran will be in a better position to create deliverable nuclear weapons. Israel has documents that now prove fundamentalists in Iran have clandestine plans, despite years of denials, to develop five 10-kiloton nuclear warheads. Iranians continue to develop a ballistic missile program, an issue the Obama administration caved on at the behest of Russia during negotiations. Now we know they have the plans to finish the job whenever they want.

Iran broke the spirit of the deal long ago. The deal was contingent on the nation coming clean regarding its past efforts. It didn’t. Though the idea that the Islamic State would ever be found in violation of the nuclear agreement by International Atomic Energy Agency was, from the start, laughable. There are no inspections. International inspectors aren’t even allow on undeclared sites without permission.

So will President Trump nix the deal? We don’t know. Now that the framework for sanctions has been destroyed, there are few good options left. But the agreement, as it stands, is worse than worthless. Rather than setting firm limits, the deal gave Iran cover and time to continue its efforts, making war with Israel more of an inevitability.

The Jewish state can’t allow a Holocaust-denying adversary with terrorist proxy armies on its borders to have the power to destroy them, or even blackmail and threaten the entire region at best — something Iran has engaged in for more than a decade without even having its hands on nuclear weapons.

Still, no amount of Iranian mendacity would convince liberal defenders the deal was a mistake. Though they have yet to coalesce around a suitable talking point, some have already argued that the deal should stay in place because Iran lies. But in reality, from beginning to end, the deal has been a disaster for the United States and for peace. It has empowered our enemies and undermined our allies. There has never been anything quite like it.
Tehran terrified, ex-Pentagon official says
The Iranian regime is “quaking in its boots,” after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed secret nuclear-program documents appropriated by the Mossad, an ex-Pentagon Iran expert told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday.

Harold Rhode spent 28 years at the Pentagon and studied in Iran before the 1979 revolution there. The fluent Farsi speaker, who is now associated with the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, said his view stems from a wave of recent Iranian infighting.

He said when things are not going well in Iran, Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps officials and rival ayatollahs start attacking each other in a public blame game that expresses how exposed and vulnerable they feel their rule has become.

Rhode named senior Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi-Amoli from northern Iran who has been lashing out at rivals, saying their corruption was bringing down the regime.
Israel claims proof Iran "lied" about past nuclear program, April 30, 2018 (Reuters

Israel “humiliated the Iranian government by capturing all of this material,” Rhode said, and many Iranians were laughing at the Islamic regime on social media.

While the global media stopped covering protests against the regime months ago, he noted, the protests are still churning
Netanyahu's speech reawakens Iranian protests against regime
"The speech by Netanyahu reawakened something in the Iranian people that greatly disturbs them," Dr. Thamar Eilam Gindin, an expert on Iran from the Shalem Academic Center and the Ezri Center said in her podcast "Enriched Uranium" on Wednesday.

Yet, however dramatic and sensitive the information Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented on Monday regarding Iran's intentions to develop nuclear technology were, what was disturbing to the Iranians was not at all related to the content of his remarks.

"I saw a large number of people who asked not to call Iran the Islamic Republic," said Eilam Gindin. "There were many calls from people who said: 'They [the Islamic Republic of Iran] do not represent the Iranian people, they took us hostage. You have to differentiate between Iran, which has a history of 3,000 years, and the Islamic Republic, which is 39 years old."

In a broader light, according to Dr. Eilam Gindin, these reactions reflect a mood currently prevailing in the streets of Iran in relation to the regime and the authorities in the republic, the United States and Israel and Netanyahu himself.

"At first the reactions were a bit hysterical," she continued. "People in Iran feel insecure, their currency is weak and the economy is shaky. There are many who oppose the regime. Netanyahu's speech, claiming that Israel caught their regime in a breach of agreements, put some pressure on them.
Israeli Ambassador: Info Revealed by Netanyahu on Iran’s Nuclear Program a ‘Smoking Bomb’
The intelligence information on Iran’s nuclear program presented by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the world on Monday was a “smoking bomb…not just a smoking gun,” according to the Jewish state’s US envoy.

In an appearance on the “CBS This Morning” talk show, Ambassador Ron Dermer said the details revealed by Netanyahu were “certainly new.”

“It puts together this giant puzzle we all had of Iran’s nuclear program,” Dermer noted. “There were a lot of question marks about Iran’s program, now we have exclamation points that they had a military nuclear program and they had an intention, and they still have an intention, to ultimately build a nuclear weapon.”
Watch the full interview with Dermer below:

Very existence of Iran’s secret nuclear archive may be a violation of nuke deal
Critics of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Monday exposé on Iran’s secret nuclear weapons program have argued that it contained nothing new — no smoking gun that proved the Islamic Republic violated the terms of the nuclear deal it struck with six world powers in 2015.

It was well known that Iran had a covert nuclear weapons program, European governments and other defenders of the deal noted, adding that it was precisely Iran’s history of dishonesty that necessitated the landmark deal with its provisions for an unprecedentedly intrusive inspection regime.

Indeed, Tehran appears to be complying with the operative provisions of the so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. As far as is known, Iran has not, for example, resumed enriching uranium to weapons-grade levels.

However, Iran certainly violated the spirit of the agreement, by lying over its past efforts to build a nuclear weapon. Iran was obligated to come clean over those efforts, and failed to do so. The deal, the Mossad’s findings clearly show, was thus born in sin.
TIP Backgrounder: Iran Lied – What it Means and What Must Be Done
The United States and its European partners must fix the full range of fatal deficiencies in the deal and demand the complete rejection of sunset clauses, robust restrictions on Iran’s ballistic missiles program, wide-ranging limitations on Tehran’s research and development on advanced centrifuges and reliable verification mechanisms.

•The deadline for the President to “nix or fix” the JCPOA is fast approaching on May 12. Cosmetic amendments to airbrush the flaws of the deal will only exacerbate the problem and benefit Iran and Russia.

•The President should reject the fake “new” deal offered by Europe and continue moving forward with imposing sanctions and demanding substantial improvements to the deal, using all available diplomatic and economic tools.

•The administration should continue to work hand in and with Israel and Arab partners to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons capabilities. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo over the weekend offered strong support to Israel in the standoff with Iran. “The United States is with Israel in this fight and we strongly support Israel’s sovereign right to defend itself,” Pompeo said.
New details emerge on daring Mossad operation in Iran
Additional details from the Mossad's audacious operation in the heart of Tehran are continuing to emerge in the wake of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's dramatic speech on Iran's nuclear program Monday.

Hadashot evening news reported Tuesday that on Jan. 31, 10 days before an Iranian drone breached Israeli airspace and was downed by an Israel Air Force Apache helicopter, the Iranians discovered the massive security breach, attempted to chase after the perpetrators, and were even "right on their tail."

Nevertheless, the Mossad agents managed to get the documents and themselves out of Iran. Most of the details surrounding the daring mission remain classified, including the codename the spy agency assigned the operation.

Once the sensitive material arrived in Israel, numerous discussions were held to determine what to do with it. Some believed that, similar to past instances, the information should be anonymously leaked to foreign media outlets. Ultimately, however, due to a combination of factors, the decision was made to go public with the information without compromising intelligence sources and methods.
British Foreign Secretary responds to Netanyahu’s Iran speech
British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson responded today to Israel's historic operation to obtain Iran's nuclear archive, which uncovered over 100,000 documents detailing Tehran's nuclear program.

"The Israeli Prime Minister’s presentation on Iran’s past research into nuclear weapons technology underlines the importance of keeping the Iran nuclear deal’s constraints on Tehran’s nuclear ambitions," Johnson said.

"The Iran nuclear deal is not based on trust about Iran’s intentions; rather it is based on tough verification, including measures that allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency unprecedented access to Iran’s nuclear programme.

"The fact that Iran conducted sensitive research in secret until 2003 shows why we need the intrusive inspections allowed by the Iran nuclear deal today. The verification provisions in the Iran nuclear deal would make it harder for Iran to restart any such research. That is another good reason for keeping the deal while building on it in order to take account of the legitimate concerns of the US and our other allies."
Germany says IAEA should probe Israeli claims (not satire)
The Latest on the Israel’s allegations that Iran concealed a nuclear weapons program before signing a deal with world powers in 2015 (all times local):

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas says the International Atomic Energy Agency should quickly follow up on allegations by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who claims that Iranian leaders covered up a nuclear weapons program before signing a deal with world powers in 2015.

Maas told the Bild daily on Tuesday that “the IAEA must as quickly as possible get access to Israeli information and clarify if there are indeed indications of a violation of the deal.”

He said that, “precisely because we cannot allow an Iranian grab for nuclear weapons,” the control mechanisms of the agreement need to work well.
Lapid says PM seriously harmed national security with Iran revelations
Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid said Wednesday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a serious error of judgment by publicly presenting the information gleaned from the Mossad’s capture of Iran’s nuclear program archives and could have harmed national security.

Lapid said he was opposed to the nuclear deal, and worked against it from the opposition, but described the prime minister’s speech as “a mistake that caused damage to this goal.”

The Yesh Atid head said that Netanyahu “made a professional mistake of the first order in his judgment on national security issues.”

“What is even more worrying is that this is not his first or only mistake recently,” Lapid said. “Netanyahu today makes mistakes that he would not have made in the past.”

Lapid was apparently insinuating that the series of investigations that Netanyahu is facing has clouded his judgement.
Just PAINFUL! Ben Rhodes takes MASSIVE tumble trying to rescue Obama from Iran Deal fallout
After Benjamin Netanyahu revealed how the Iran Deal was “based on Iranian lies and Iranian deception,” a lot of people couldn’t wait to hear what Ben Rhodes had to say about it.

This afternoon, Rhodes finally broke his silence … by spinning up a storm:

There’s that argument again: We knew the Iranian regime was lying, so we had to do the deal with them! Honestly, we’d expect nothing less from the likes of Ben Rhodes.

Former Obama Spokesman: Trump and Israelis ‘Cooking Up Intel’ to Undermine Iran Nuclear Deal
Former Obama administration van driver spokesman Tommy Vietor tweeted Tuesday that President Donald Trump is "now cooking up intel with the Israelis" to push the United States toward conflict with Iran.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday presented thousands of secret files obtained by Israeli intelligence officials that show Iran lied about its past work on developing nuclear weapons.

Reporter Barak Ravid tweeted that Netanyahu coordinated the timing of the documents' public unveiling with the White House and chose this week because of the May 12 deadline for Trump to decide whether to reimpose sanctions previously lifted under the Iran nuclear deal.

Vietor, a former National Security Council spokesman and staunch defender of the Obama-brokered nuclear deal, linked to Ravid's tweets and wrote, "After years of bashing US intelligence agencies for getting Iraq WMD wrong, Trump is now cooking up intel with the Israelis to push us closer to a conflict with Iran. A scandal hiding in plain sight."

Trump administration officials verified the authenticity of the Iran documents to the Washington Free Beacon and said the Iranian deceit made it essentially impossible for Trump to remain in the agreement.
Condoleezza Rice: Not ‘End of the World’ If Trump Leaves Iran Nuclear Deal
Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Tuesday said it would not be the "end of the world" if President Donald Trump decides to leave the Iran nuclear deal.

"We've had various members of the Trump administration testify to congress that there is no proof that Iran is violating the 2015 accord. What is the damage if President Trump withdraws from the accord?" "CBS This Morning" anchor Norah O'Donnell asked.

"Let me say, I wouldn't have signed this agreement. I said that before. I think it was a weak agreement, particularly on verification," Rice said. "It allows Iran to break out after a specific period of time. I probably would have stayed in for alliance management reasons more than anything else. But I don't think that it's the end of the world if the administration leaves the agreement."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a presentation on Monday about the intelligence gathered by Israel that describes Iran's nuclear program. Senior Trump administration officials confirmed the findings as authentic and praised the prime minister for disclosing thousands of secret documents proving Iran lied about its past work on a nuclear warhead. Officials told the Washington Free Beacon the revelation was a "powerful presentation" by Israel outlining why the Iran deal must be fixed or killed.

"First of all, the reason that we have been so concerned about Iran is that we know that they lie and cheat about their nuclear weapons programs," Rice said. "I haven't seen the entire [Israeli intelligence] dossier, but I suspect that it simply reenforces what we've always known, that the Iranians were secretly developing nuclear weapons at secret sites."

Rice added that Netanyahu's presentation is important to the 2015 nuclear deal when it comes to verification.
Peter Beinart: Trump may already be violating the Iran deal
The more interesting question isn’t whether Iran has been complying with the nuclear deal. It’s whether America has. American journalists often describe the agreement as a trade. In the words of one CNN report, it “obliges Iran to limit its nuclear program in exchange for the suspension of economic sanctions.” But there’s more to it than that. The deal doesn’t only require the United States to lift nuclear sanctions. It requires the United States not to inhibit Iran’s reintegration into the global economy. Section 26 commits the U.S. (and its allies) “to prevent interference with the realisation of the full benefit by Iran of the sanctions lifting specified” in the deal. Section 29 commits the U.S. and Europe to “refrain from any policy specifically intended to directly and adversely affect the normalisation of trade and economic relations with Iran.” Section 33 commits them to “agree on steps to ensure Iran’s access in areas of trade, technology, finance and energy.”

The Trump administration has likely been violating these clauses. The Washington Post reported that at a NATO summit last May, “Trump tried to persuade European partners to stop making trade and business deals with Iran.” Then, in July, Trump’s director of legislative affairs boasted that at a G20 summit in Germany, Trump had “underscored the need for nations … to stop doing business with nations that sponsor terrorism, especially Iran.” Both of these lobbying efforts appear to violate America’s pledge to “refrain from any policy specifically intended to directly and adversely affect the normalisation of trade and economic relations with Iran.”
Business Insider: Israel ‘Stomping on Iran’
Yes, you read that correctly: according to Business Insider, Israel is “stomping” on Iran. And it’s Israel that is bringing about war. Not just any war, but “one of the worst wars the Middle East has ever seen.”

This at a time when the Syrian civil war has already killed over half a million people…with Iranian support.

In truth, Iran and Syria are posing a very real and immediate military threat to Israel, and Israel is responding in a highly calculated manner.

This reality seems lost on writer Alex Lockie, who portrays Iran and Syria as if they were some kind of hapless victims, rather than highly armed, and very active, aggressors.

Here are just a few of Lockie’s most problematic statements:
Experts say a strike in Syria on Sunday that is believed to have killed Iranians was most likely carried out by Israel in a marked escalation of military conflict.
Revealed: Palestinian ‘Journalist’ Killed at Gaza Border was a Terrorist
A Palestinian journalist who died from wounds received during the Hamas-led “Great Return March” has been identified as a terrorist. Ahmed Abu Hussein, a journalist who worked with Bisann News and Voice of Palestine Radio, was a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a U.S.-designated terror group, according to an April 30, 2018 report by the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center (ITIC).

Hussein was wounded on April 13, 2018, during violent demonstrations at the Israel-Gaza border. His death was announced on April 25, 2018. Hamas and other terrorist organizations have encouraged thousands of Gazans to cross the border with Israel, interspersing armed operatives among unarmed civilians. As CAMERA noted in an April 26, 2018 JNS Op-Ed, Hamas hoped that by purposefully exposing Palestinians to injury and creating a no-win situation for Israel, the so-called “Great Return March” would delegitimize the Jewish state (“Palestinian Nazi Flags and Hamas Talking Points”).

The majority of the Palestinians killed by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have been linked to terrorist groups (“Think Tank: Majority of Gazans Killed During the ‘Great Return March’ Were Terrorists,” CAMERA, April 26, 2018). And Ahmed Abu Hussein can be added to that list.

ITIC noted that after Hussein’s death, the PFLP hung “death notices…saying that the organization mourned the death of its member” and red “PFLP flags were also carried” during his funeral. On April 28, 2018, the PFLP held a memorial service for Hussein the Jabalia refugee camp. Images of top PFLP leaders, such as Abu Ali Mustafa, “decorated” the service. The PFLP’s “armed wing” is named after Mustafa, a co-founder of the group who was killed by the IDF during the Second Intifada (2000-05).

ITIC’s report featured pictures of the memorial service, as well as posts from Hussein’s Facebook page, in which he celebrated PFLP terror attacks.

Palestinian charged with asking IDF to shoot him to get Hamas stipend
A Palestinian who allegedly asked IDF soldiers to shoot during the violent protests on the Gaza border last month, so he could receive a $500 payment and a monthly stipend from Hamas, according to an indictment filed against him on Tuesday.

Mustafa Banna, 20, was charged with security offenses, including entering a closed military zone, membership in a terror organization, providing measures to commit a crime and arms offenses.

According to the indictment, Banna is a Hamas member who joined the terror group in 2017 following in the footsteps of his uncle, who was already a member of Hamas.

Among other things, Banna is suspected of taking part in the digging of one of Hamas's tunnels in the Saja’iyya area. He was also allegedly part of the medical unit that treated Hamas members injured while digging the tunnels.

According to the indictment, Banna joined the Hamas-organized protests over the right of return on the Gaza border in early April. He allegedly came close to the Gaza border fence in an effort to get shot and wounded by IDF soldiers.
New York Times Electrifies Israel’s Gaza Fence
The New York Times decided to report from inside the heart of the Palestinian violence currently taking place on Israel’s border with Gaza under the headline: “Plan to Storm Fence Gets Bloody Preview in Gaza.”

So what of this fence?

For the first time in five weeks of protests, some reached the second barrier — an electrified, sensor-laden fence that marks the edge of Israeli territory — and tried to climb it or pull it down. A few hundred yards beyond it lies the Israeli farming community of Nahal Oz. …

Ibrahim Shahin, 26, said he was among a group of about 12 men who cut through the barbed wire and then began climbing the electrified fence.

An “electrified” fence?

Were the 12 men climbing this fence wearing rubber gloves and boots?

Of course not.

Lag Ba’omer bonfires scaled back for fears of weather, disasters
Municipalities around the country scaled back Lag Ba’omer festivities Wednesday in a rare move, citing fears of unseasonably dry weather and lingering doubts after a flash flood claimed the lives of 10 youths in the Negev.

In Meron, the lakeside burial place of Kabbalist figure Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai near the Sea of Galilee, huge bonfires are scheduled to proceed as usual, though the city of Haifa, among others, forbade the lighting of bonfires during the holiday, which will last until Thursday night.

Forecasts across the country see unseasonably warm temperatures and dry weather through next week, prompting fears the bonfires could spread. Fire and Rescue Commissioner Dedy Simhi signed an order Wednesday forbidding bonfires across most of the country.

Meanwhile, the Israel Fire and Rescue Authority released a warning to the public that “in the coming days, weather conditions characterized by high winds, which are accompanied by high temperatures, are expected to cause rapid spread of fire, endangering human life and property.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Israelis not to light bonfires on Twitter, saying "there will be other opportunities" in the future.
Attempted bombing at IDF court
Two Arab terrorists were arrested in Samaria Tuesday afternoon while the pair were on their way to carry out a bombing attack on an Israeli military court in the area.

The two suspects arrived at an IDF court in the Salim district in central Samaria Tuesday afternoon, carrying three concealed pipe bombs and a gas tank.

Border Police officers stationed outside of the court spotted the two suspects and apprehended them before they could carry out their attack.

The two were arrested and transferred to investigators for questioning.
One of two suspects behind 2016 hit on Hamas engineer said arrested in Croatia
The Tunisian Justice Ministry reportedly claimed Wednesday that one of the suspected operatives behind a 2016 hit on a Hamas-linked engineer that has been attributed to Israel had been arrested in Croatia.

Both Hamas and Hezbollah have accused the Mossad of killing Mohamed Zouari, 49, who was shot to death at the wheel of his car outside his house in the Tunisian port city of Sfax in December 2016.

Hamas claimed last year that Israeli spies had used Bosnian passports to enter Tunisia and assassinate Zouari, who also held Belgian citizenship.

Hebrew media reports, citing the Tunisian Justice Ministry source, said the suspect had been arrested two months ago in Croatia, but authorities were refusing to extradite him to Tunisia.

There were no further details in the report.
MEMRI: Following The Murder In Malaysia Of Palestinian Engineer Fadi Al-Batsh, Hamas Supporters Debate Whether To Act Against Israel Abroad
On April 21, 2018, Palestinian engineer Dr. Fadi Al-Batsh was killed in a drive-by motorcycle shooting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The London daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat wrote that he was an outstanding researcher, expert in electrical engineering and rocket manufacture. It added that he had been living in Malaysia for a decade, after being sent there by Hamas to complete his studies, that he was acting secretly on behalf of Hamas, and that this was known to only a few Hamas leaders.[1]

Palestinian Islamic Jihad official Khaled Al-Batsh, a relative of Dr. Fadi Al-Batsh, accused the Israeli Mossad of assassinating him;[2] Hamas itself accused Israel of assassinating him, describing him in its announcement of his death as "one of [Hamas's] righteous knights and sons."[3] During a condolence visit to the family's home in the city of Jabaliya in the Gaza Strip, Hamas political bureau head Isma'il Haniya called on the Malaysian government to investigate the murder, noting that doing so would "reveal the involvement of the Mossad organization in the assassination."[4] He added that those behind the killing "will certainly yet pay the price,"[5] and added, "The battle with Israel has moved outside the occupied lands."[6]

At an April 26, 2018 Hamas military ceremony at the Rafah crossing to receive Al-Batsh's body, Haniya said: "The criminal hands sent against the martyr Al-Batsh will be cut off." Hamas official Khalil Al-Hayya said at the ceremony: "Oh occupation, the accounts between us have become heavy. The day of punishment will necessarily come."[7] Hamas official Osama Hamdan said that Hamas would closely follow the murder investigation conducted by the Malaysian authorities, but also stressed: "We in Hamas know that Israel is targeting Arab and Palestinian scientists."[8]
Israel to Shift West Bank Power Supply to Palestinian Authority in $775 Million Deal
Israel signed a 15-year, $775 million deal with the self-ruling Palestinian Authority on Tuesday to put electricity distribution for Palestinians in the West Bank in PA hands and build four power plants to that end, officials said.

The nearly three million Palestinians in the West Bank currently rely on Israel for their electricity, with neighboring Jordan providing power to the Jericho area in the Jordan River Valley.

The deal does not apply to the Gaza Strip, whose two million Palestinians suffer frequent blackouts due to severe fuel shortages and continued power-sharing disputes between Gaza’s Islamist Hamas rulers and the West Bank-based PA.

As part of the new deal, the PA will pay off a 915-million-shekel debt to the state-owned utility Israel Electric Corp (IEC), while taking charge of the distribution of electricity to West Bank Palestinians.

The IEC will sell power to the Palestinian Electricity Transmission Company (PETL) through four plants to be built by the IEC and PA. PETL will own the power plants and channel the electricity supply.

“The agreement … frees the Palestinian electricity sector of complete Israeli control, which has lasted for decades,” said a statement issued in the name of Hussein Al-Sheikh, head of the PA’s civil affairs agency.

Israeli Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz said the agreement paves the way for Palestinians to develop a modern grid.

Morocco cuts Iran ties over alleged Hezbollah arms delivery to separatist group
Morocco has cut diplomatic ties with Iran over its alleged involvement in the delivery of weapons from its Lebanese ally Hezbollah to a group seeking independence for Western Sahara, Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said Tuesday.

Bourita said “a first shipment of weapons was recently” sent to the Algerian-backed Polisario Front via an “element” at the Iranian embassy in Algiers.

“Morocco has irrefutable proof, names, and specific actions to corroborate the complicity between the Polisario and Hezbollah,” he told reporters.

The decision to sever ties with Tehran is “in response to Iran’s involvement, through Hezbollah, in allying itself with the Polisario over the past two years in order to target the security and higher interests of Morocco.”

Bourita was speaking upon his return from Tehran, where he said he informed his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif about Morocco’s decision.

The foreign minister said he departed Tehran along with Morocco’s ambassador to Iran.

“I will ask the Iranian embassy’s charge d’affaires to leave the kingdom as soon as possible,” Bourita added.

There is lot of evidence of Jew-hatred in the Arab and Muslim world, but perhaps the most telling is the desire - actually, the pressing need - to associate one's enemies with Jews.

Egyptian (both Islamist and secular), Turkish, Saudi Arabian leaders have all been damned with the accusations of being secretly Jewish. Fatah and Hamas trade accusations of being Zionist. Malaysian political parties love to accuse their opponents of having Jewish ties. It comes up all the time in Arab and Muslim media.

The latest being published today is about the Qatari royal family. It's a doozy.

Ban Thamer al-Ani, an Iraqi "researcher" with a master's degree from the University of Baghdad - so you know her academic credentials are impeccable -  wrote a book called "Iran and Qatar's plots against the Middle East." In it she reveals the startling truth.

Ban says that Iran and Qatar are relying on the Protocols of the Elders of Zion to destroy the Arab world.

This "researcher" says that the Qatari ruling family has Jewish roots, and this is the secret of its hostility towards the Arabian Gulf. Ban claims to have found historical documents that the ruling family in Qatar can be traced to a Jewish slave

If I understand the story correctly, in the 1800s a person named al-Khalifa close to some Gulf rulers fell in love with a Polish Jewish woman with the Jewish name of "Helena McCart" or something like that. Helena's father worked in a pig farm owned by one of the Polish feudalists. He was, of course, "one of the Jewish rabbis".

The night before he was to return to the Gulf, Helena took off her clothes and seduced him, and then her father allowed her to marry him and he stayed and joined the Jewish family's pig farming business, seemingly as a slave but he also converted to Judaism. He had four children, who he taught about his people and his country. The boys wanted to go back to the Arab countries their father came from, so the devious rabbi married them off and ordered them to spread in the Muslim countries. You know, to take over the Arab world.
Two went to Palestine and the other two went to the Arabian Gulf. They settled and changed their names from Al-Khalifa to Al Thani, the name that the Chief Rabbi ordered them to use when they settled in the country. (The rabbi must have been promoted.)   This unnamed rabbi is said to be famous among the Jews of Poland.
"Those who returned to their father's country numbered fifty-three men and women. A Shaykh from the tribe of Al-Maqar discovered their truth and declared war on them but avoided the war by marrying their most beautiful Jewish woman and giving her a lot of money. And she betrayed him and he killed her and threw her body to the dogs, and he declared war on the rest of the al-Thanis  and after several wars the Jewish al-Thanis won.
This historical document is said to have disappeared from the Turkish National Museum and no one knows what it is.
But this "researcher" knows all about the story in detail - without having any documentation. Which is an amazing attribute of Arab historical research altogether.

The story has it all - a Jew, a slave, a pig farmer. If you wanted to come up with the worst possible thing to accuse an Arab of being, this is it.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas gave an antisemitic speech that was widely covered in the Israeli and right-wing press, not so much in the  Western media.

i24News briefly summarizes what he said about Jews:

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas made controversial statements Monday evening suggesting the Holocaust was not due to anti-Semitism but rather to the Jews’ “social behavior, [charging interest], and financial matters.”Giving his own “history lesson” of pogroms in Europe during the start of a four-day session by the National Palestinian Council in Ramallah, Abbas highlighted that “such pogroms did not take place in Arab nations, which had Jewish communities."
There obviously were pogroms in the Arab world against Jews, although not to the extent of pogroms in Europe. But a few of them are notable to mention in context of Abbas' speech.

In 1834, there was a huge Arab pogrom against Jews that lasted 33 days in the town that Mahmoud Abbas was born in, Safed (Tzfat.) Chances are some of his relatives participated in it.

This source says 500 were killed:

In 1834 the local Arabs rebelled against the new Egyptian governor who ruled Ottoman Palestine between 1831 to 1841. The rebellion against this governor, Muhammad Ali, expanded to include attacks against the Jews of Palestine. While the Jews of certain cities like Jerusalem were spared, Tzfat was not. A Safed Islamic clergyman named Muhamad Damoor incited the Moslems to attack the Jews of Tzfat. On June 15, 1834, local Arabs and Bedouins, including the Arabs who lived in the Arab Quarter of Tzfat itself, invaded Tzfat’s Jewish Quarter.
The Arabs destroyed homes, plundered synagogues and businesses and burned much of the city. Eyewitnesses described scenes of torture, and murder over the course of 33 days. Historians estimated that over 500 people were killed and many others were blinded and maimed.
I couldn't corroborate the 500 killed, but many were. Here's another description:
The Palestinian Arabs of the Eastern Galilee took advantage of a regional crisis, the war between Egypt and Turkey, to attack their Jewish neighbors and strip them of everything they had: clothes, properties, houses, and the like. In the process people were beaten in the streets, many times to death, synagogues destroyed and holy books desecrated. An entire community of 2,000 souls (Kinglake says 4,000) was forced into hiding for 33 days, in caves, ruins, inhospitable mountaintops, and basements. In that mayhem there were good Arabs who saved lives, like the people of the village of Ein Zeitim and a few individuals, Muslims and Christians from the city itself, but there were also the double crossers who promised to help for a large sum of money, only to hand over the Jews to the rioting mob outside the hideout. For 33 days the lives of the Jews of Safed had practically no value, and anyone of them who showed his or her face in public was at risk of been beaten to death, sometimes by people they knew as neighbors or business associates.
This is a classic pogrom by any definition.

But what about the 1929 riots that killed scores of Jews in Hebron, and the earlier massacre in 1921?

Abbas actually mentioned them in his speech - admiringly - calling the Arabs who butchered Jews "revolutionaries."

Abbas is an antisemite who considers Arabs butchering Jewish woman and children "revolutionaries" - and then tells people that Arabs always treated Jews well.

By the way, when Abbas pretended to walk back his Holocaust denial in 2014, the New York Times wrote a major story about it. Now that he shows that he is an antisemite who blames Jews themselves for being slaughtered, the NYT (as of this writing) has not said a word.

From an op-ed in The New York Times by Steven Simon, who somehow survived a single year as National Security Council’s senior director for the Middle East and North Africa:

Monday afternoon, just a bit behind schedule, Mr. Netanyahu took to the stage next to an enormous screen. The headlines had suggested he would be in his office at a desk or podium to share news of existential importance. Instead, he presented a minor-league TED Talk — and in English, no less. Outside the elite, fewer and fewer people in Israel speak English, so the notion of a country’s leader supposedly addressing his compatriots in a foreign language on a matter of national security added to the weirdness of the performance.
One would think that a writer freely admitting that he didn't understand why something happened would disqualify him from calling it "weird."

But it wasn't weird. Netanyahu is a brilliant communicator. Dismissing his choice and medium of messaging reveals that Simon cannot think outside his own little box.

Obviously Bibi wasn't addressing Israelis. A good theory of who he really was addressing comes from Michael Weiss, an expert on the Middle East:

Today [Bibi]  broadcast to the IRGC that their most guarded facilities are playgrounds for the Mossad. Not a confidence building exercise for Iranians if they seek to go to war.

Netanyahu is playing chess and Simon thinks he's watching a game of tic-tac-toe.

The archive had been stored in what Mr. Netanyahu described as a derelict warehouse in Tehran. The photos he displayed indicated that there did not even appear to be a lock on the door. One wonders how important the Iranians thought these documents were, given the slapdash approach they took to storing them.
Is Simon seriously claiming that the Iranians didn't care about the contents of these archives? Without knowing the content of any of the tens of thousands of documents? Again - he doesn't understand something so he displays his ignorance by disparaging what he doesn't understand.

Why were sensitive documents in this civilian warehouse? Barak Ravid has an excellent Twitter backgrounder on the Mossad operation, and he writes in part:

An Israeli official said the Mossad received intelligence that showed the Iranians were trying to hide all the documents which dealt with the military dimensions of their nuclear program. The official said that in a highly secret operation known to a handful of Iranian officials the Iranians transferred tens of thousands of documents and CD's from several different sites around the country to a civilian warehouse in Tehran.  The Israeli official said the Iranians did all that because they were afraid that in post Iran deal inspections the IAEA will discover the incriminating documents The Mossad has put the warehouse under surveillance and started preparing for a possible operation to seize the documents. According to Israeli officials more than 100 Mossad spies worked on this operation.

100 Mossad agents working in a highly sensitive area, and this NYT "expert" claims that there was not even a lock on the door so it was a cinch. Wow, those Mossad agents should have just walked in the unlocked door- what's wrong with them for not consulting with Steven Simon?

Simon goes on to say that everything revealed in the archives was known already. Um, no - there are so many files that the US and Israel haven't finished going through them yet. Ravid again:

In February Mossad started translating & analyzing the documents most of were written in Farsi. A special team with 50 analysts was formed in the Mossad & a separate team is working in the CIA. Both intelligence agencies still haven’t finished analyzing the documents
An Israeli official told me: "The documents tell us new things about the military dimensions of the Iranian nuclear program. Things we didn’t know before. The documents give us new details about Iranian R&D sites, sites for possible nuclear tests & individuals involved"
The official added: "The documents tell us more details than the IAEA knew until toady about the Iranian nuclear program.

And as David Horovitz notes, the documents show not that Iran is violating the deal - but how terrible the deal was to begin with, and how foolhardy it was to offer a deal that gave Iran the pathway to nuclear weapons and delivery systems where research can continue at full tilt.

All this in exchange for a delay of a few years for the weapon itself and many billions of dollars to help pay Hezbollah and prop up the Syrian dictator who gasses his own people to death.

But the New York Times is committed to supporting the deal that should be replaced with something that actually stops Iran's obvious quest for nuclear weapons - something that has teeth.
