From Ian:

The Big Middle East Lie
Nimer Mahmoud Jamal, the 37-year-old Palestinian terrorist who on September 25 murdered three Israelis at the entrance to Har Adar near Jerusalem, had a permit from the Israeli authorities to work in Israel.

His family and friends say he also had a good life and was considered lucky to have been employed by Jews because he received a higher salary and was protected by Israeli labor laws. The night before Jamal set out in his murderous mission, he spent a few hours at the fitness gym in his village, located only a few miles away from Har Adar.

So, Jamal, the murderer of the three Israelis (two of the victims were Arab Israelis), was not poor. He was not unemployed. In fact, according his friends, Jamal earned much more than what a senior police officer or school teacher working for the Palestinian Authority or Hamas brings home every month.

What was it, then, that drove Jamal to his murderous scheme, gunning down three young men who were supposed to be facilitating his entry into Israel? Was it because he could not provide for his children? No. Was it because his landlord was pressuring him about the rent? No: Jamal lived in a nice place of his own, complete with furniture, appliances and bedrooms that any family in the West would be proud to own.

Jamal wanted to murder Jews because he believed this was a noble deed that would earn him the status of shaheed (martyr) and hero among his family, friends and society. In Palestinian culture in particular, and Arab culture in general, murderers of Jews are glorified on a daily basis.

They are touted as the lucky ones who are now in the company of Prophet Mohammed and the angels in Paradise. Male terrorists are also busy with the 72 virgins they were awarded as a prize for murdering Jews. The murderers -- as Muslim clerics and leaders hammer into the heads of Palestinians -- are also given access to rivers of honey and fine drinks once they set foot in their imaginary Paradise.

Jamal's friends and family are now convinced that he has been rewarded by Allah and Prophet Mohammed in Paradise for murdering three Israelis. They do not care about his children, whom he left behind, and certainly not about the families of the three Israelis he murdered.
Exposé: CNN and NYT ignored US Defense Secretary revelation on Taliban
We are living in a sick, news world, not a “fake news” world. Two of the largest pillars of the American established news media, the New York Times and the Cable News Network (CNN) just happened to omit the central point of US Secretary of Defense James Mattis’,explicit comments during his trip to Afghanistan.

He said that Russia and Iran were arming the Taliban in Afghanistan. The Wall Street Journal ]reported Mattis’ comments accurately, publicizing the declaration referring to Iran and Russia arming the Taliban in Afghanistan, “Those two countries [Russia and Iran] have suffered losses to terrorism, so I think it would be extremely unwise if they think they can somehow support terrorism in another country and not have it come back to haunt them.”

We are living in a truly ‘sick news’ world in which the NYT and CNN, due to some bizarre-world political slant, fail to report that the US Defense Secretary has openly accused Russia and Iran of actively helping murder our troops in Afghanistan.

Unfortunately, this isn’t a new Iranian ‘malign’ development. In fact,as Yogi Berra would say: With the US in Afghanistan, it’s the US Iraqi Military Catastrophe Groundhog Day all over again. In Iraq from 2004-2010, Iran, the ultimate terror-state, and Syria’s Bashar al-Assad (the same genocidal-psychopath that’s still there), armed the Sunni al Qaeda in Iraq to murder thousands of US soldiers and all the while Presidents Bush, and Obama, and the US military did absolutely nothing to stop them.
Israel’s security precautions
Sir, – After reading Mike Murphy’s opinion piece, one would wonder if Mr Murphy had actually travelled to Israel or if he had simply read a guide to the worst slurs against the State of Israel and decided to regurgitate them for the purposes of this article (“Degradation of Palestinians shocking to witness”, Opinion & Analysis, September 23rd).

In a piece littered with mistruths, one of the most heinous has to be his claim that Israel wants the Palestinian people to disappear. Apart from the fact that a fifth of Israel’s own citizens are Arabs, both Christian and Muslim, Israel has repeatedly called for a two-state solution where Israel will stand side by side with a democratic Palestinian state. Since the beginning of peace talks in 1993, we have made repeated and courageous offers of full statehood to the Palestinians, only to be rebuffed. The late prime minister Yitzhak Rabin paid the ultimate price for his courage in pursuing peace with the Palestinians.

Unfortunately, the current Palestinian leadership seems to lack the courage to recognise Israel’s right to exist and move forward in direct negotiations to bring about a Palestinian state. Instead they pursue their quest for statehood in the international arena, seeking symbolic recognition, which does nothing to achieve the objectives of two states for two peoples.

Numerous false allegations about how Israel treats the Palestinians are littered throughout Mr Murphy’s article. I would suggest that if Mr Murphy has an issue with the conditions of the roads around Bethlehem, he take it up with the Palestinian Authority who are responsible for the governance of that area.

More than 58 killed, 500 wounded in mass shooting in Las Vegas
At least 58 people were killed and more than 500 were injured in a shooting Sunday night at a country music festival on the Las Vegas Strip.

Las Vegas Metro Police Sheriff Joseph Lombardo confirmed the casualty toll in a press conference.

Country music star Jason Aldean was performing Sunday night at the end of the three-day Route 91 Harvest Festival when the gunman opened fire across the street from inside the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. SWAT teams quickly descended on the concert and the casino, and officers used explosives to get into the hotel room where the suspect was inside, authorities said.

The shooter, identified as Stephen Paddock, 64, opened fire on the concert from a window on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino across Las Vegas Boulevard, Lombardo said.

It was the deadliest mass shooting in US history.

Lombardo said Paddock, a resident of Mesquite, Nevada, killed himself before police officers entered his hotel room and that despite eyewitness accounts to the contrary, there were no additional shooters.
Israeli Officials Condemn ‘Terrible’ Las Vegas Massacre, Express Condolences
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned on Monday the previous night’s attack at a country music concert in Las Vegas, in which at least 58 people were killed and more than 500 were wounded.

“On this terrible day, the people of Israel stand shoulder to shoulder with the American people in mourning and sorrow,” Netanyahu stated following the deadliest mass shooting in US history. “Our hearts go out to the victims’ families and we wish a speedy recovery to the wounded. We grieve with you.”

In a letter he sent to US President Donald Trump on Monday, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin wrote, “The people of Israel join me in sending our deepest sympathy to you, to the participants in the festival, the people of Las Vegas and to all the people of the United States following this shocking attack which took the lives of so many innocent people and injured so very many more.”

“We stand with you as you mourn the terrible loss of life and injury following this senseless attack on people who had merely gathered together to listen to music,” Rivlin continued.

Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely tweeted on Monday, “Israel grieves with the American people over the senseless loss of innocent life in the horrific massacre in Las Vegas.”
Brother of Toulouse terrorist who killed 4 Jews goes on trial for aiding attacks
The brother of the Islamist terrorist who shot dead seven people in southwest France in 2012, including three Jewish schoolchildren, went on trial Monday over his alleged complicity in the first of a wave of attacks by homegrown jihadists.

Mohamed Merah’s March 2012 shooting attack on Ozar Hatorah school in Toulouse, where he killed a teacher and three pupils, was the deadliest terror attack against Jews in France in three decades.

The 23-year-old Toulouse native also shot dead three soldiers in the nearby garrison town of Montauban before being killed by police in a shootout after a 32-hour siege at his home.

The attacks, which he carried out in the name of Al-Qaeda, were the first in a wave of jihadist assaults in France that resumed in 2015 with the shootings at satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a massacre at a Paris concert hall.

In the most recent attacks being investigated by anti-terror police, a man shouting “Allahu Akbar” (God is great) stabbed two women to death at the main train station in Marseille on Sunday.

The Islamic State terror group claimed the attack as the work of one of its “soldiers,” though a source close to the investigation said there was as yet no solid evidence linking the man to the group.

Merah’s brother Abdelkader, 35, is the first person to be tried over the spate of killings.
Somali Refugee Faces Terror Charges in Canada Stabbing, Car Attacks
A Somali refugee who had been on a watch list over extremist views faced five counts of attempted murder and terror charges on Sunday after Canadian police said he stabbed a police officer and ran down four pedestrians with a car in Edmonton, Alberta.

The suspect, a 30-year-old man whom police did not identify,

had been investigated two years ago for promoting extremist ideology but was not deemed a threat, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said.

RCMP Assistant Commissioner Marlin Degrand said an "exhaustive investigation" into the man in 2015 did not uncover sufficient evidence to pursue charges.

Canadian media identified the suspect as Abdulahi Hasan Sharif, although Reuters was not immediately able to confirm his identity.

Police cordoned off an apartment block near downtown Edmonton and plainclothes officers were seen carrying large bags of equipment into the building.

The attacks in the western Canadian city began when a Chevy Malibu hit a police officer standing in front of a football stadium at about 8:15 p.m. Mountain time on Saturday (10.15 p.m. ET), sending him flying into the air.

The driver got out of the car and stabbed the officer multiple times before fleeing, according to police accounts and surveillance footage of the incident.
Marseille stabber was released from detention day before fatal attack
French officials said Monday that a man who fatally stabbed two women at Marseille’s main train station had been arrested and released the day before the attack.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack, the latest of several targeting France.

A body lies under a white sheet outside Marseille’s main train station Sunday, Oct. 1, 2017 in Marseille, southern France.

Two police officials said the man did not have French residency papers and was detained for suspected shoplifting in the Lyon region Saturday before being released.

The officials said he was not on France’s extremist watch list.

The suspect, killed by police after Sunday’s attack, was identified by his fingerprints.

French media reports said he used multiple identity papers.
ISIS claims fatal stabbings of 2 women at French train station
A knife-wielding terrorist stabbed two women to death Sunday at the main train station in the southern French city of Marseille as he shouted "Allahu akbar" ("God is great" in Arabic). The Islamic State group claimed the brutal attack, saying it was the work of one of its "soldiers."

French soldiers shot the man to death after the attacks and authorities were working to determine if he had links to Islamic extremism.

Police sources said the victims were aged 17 and 20. One had her throat slit while the other was stabbed in the chest and stomach.

French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb, who visited to Marseille to meet with local authorities and troops on the scene, said police have video that shows the man attacking a woman and running away, then coming back and attacking a second woman.

The video shows the man running toward soldiers who were rushing to Marseille's Saint Charles train station.
Oslo at twenty-four - Failing the “crystal ball” test
So if Yitzhak Rabin had had a crystal ball in September 1993,the depressing chain of events that would have unfolded before his eyes as he peered into the milky surface of the glass orb would be this:

A quarter century of spiraling terror in city streets, buses, and cafes; thousands of his countrymen maimed or murdered, four (arguably, five) military campaigns with hundreds of casualties, the dramatic enhancement of the quality and quantity of the weaponry of the terror organizations ranged against Israel; the huge cost of the barrier being constructed, high above and deep below, ground, to secure Israeli civilians from terrorist infiltration and tunnels…

So if indeed, Rabin could have foreseen that all this would be Israel’s lot in exchange for the gut-wrenching and perilous concessions the agreements called on it to make, who could doubt that he would never have affixed his signature to them…

Surely then, this—the Crystal Ball Test—is the ultimate indictment of the Oslo Agreements. Surely, it is time, after a quarter-century, for them—and all that they stand for—to be branded what they indisputably turned out to be –a colossal and tragic blunder of historic proportions—and to be treated as such.
Alan Baker: 'The case for closing the UN' is Science fiction for now
DOLINGER DEVOTES a chapter, aptly entitled “The UN in the Footsteps of Hitler,” to describing the inherent discrimination and antisemitism of the UN in its actions devoted to singling out, discriminating against and delegitimizing the State of Israel. Citing such partisan and discriminative bodies as UNRWA, referring to the General Assembly resolution equating Zionism with racism, and the myriad of political resolutions aimed at demonizing Israel, he concludes that the UN is nothing more than an accomplice to terrorists.

However, this is in his view not limited to the UN, but also extends to what he describes as the “malignant International Red Cross,” which has taken an anti-Israel political stance, influencing the other international organizations. Similarly with respect to international NGOs, the boycott movement, the international media and even US president Barack Obama – all considered to be collaborating with and encouraging Arab terrorism.

Dolinger’s aim in writing this book is to propose a viable alternative to the UN, through the creation of a new world organization that will not be “a hostage to blocs of undemocratic states that are mega-violators of human rights,” will not be hostage to its member states, will not promote contemporary antisemitism and will not support totalitarian leaders.

In his final chapter, he details the nature of a new international organization – a “League of Democracies” – totally disengaged from the UN, composed of a group of nations that would “set human rights above all aims and undertake to protect their own populations from harm, and also, where feasible, to intervene in third party states – not members of the organization – in order to save human beings from destruction.”

He adds as a unique addition the need for the involvement of leaders of all religions, as a source of inspiration and orientation, providing ethical norms and morality in the conduct of international economy and politics.

Dolinger concludes with the hope that such a dream may still materialize.

Time will tell.
Elliott Abrams: Ideology and Foreign Policy
Barack Obama undertook two supremely ideological foreign policy moves. In both cases he seemed largely motivated by myths about American "crimes" in the past, and for that reason failed or refused to bargain hard for American advantage. Instead, he appeared to see the new negotiations as including a bit of restitution for previous American wrongs.

The more significant case was Iran, where he spoke of the crime of overthrowing the leftist Iranian prime minister, Mohammed Mossadeq, in 1953. There is good reason to wonder, in fact, whether the United States bears the responsibility for Mossadeq's fate--or indeed whether Mossadeq and the Iranian people get the credit. (After the State Department released a large group of cables about those events in 1953, Reuel Gerecht wrote that “It is hard to read these cables and come to the conclusion that America overthrew Mossadeq.”) That was not Obama's view, but in fact Obama was never much concerned about the Iranian people, and his human rights efforts in Iran were weak to the point of disappearance-- even, or especially, when the Iranian people rose up against the regime in June 2009.

The other case was Cuba. There, Obama handed valuable gifts of money and legitimacy to the brutal Castro regime. As with Iran there was a peremptory claim that the deal being done would somehow lead to a vast relaxation of the regime's oppression, but as with Iran it was quickly proved false. The new tourist flights, the cruise ship arrivals, the additional commerce, and all the money they brought was swept into the maw of the Castro regime, while the people benefitted not at all by experiencing an ounce of freedom.
MK attends terrorist's release party
Last week, Mohammed Khalf, a resident of Jatt, was released from a 12-year sentence for terrorist activity. According to Yediot Ahronot, the release party held for him by his family included the presence of MK Abd al-Hakim Haj Yahya of the Arab Joint List.

According to the report, Khalf had become involved in terror through his acquaintance with a Hamas terrorist by the name of Wael Zakala, whom Khalf employed in his carpentry business. Zakala introduced Khalf to the terror cell in which he was involved.

“As time passed, Khalf began to help Zakala’s terror cell more and more, including trying to obtain weapons for it,” the report reads. “The beginning of 2005 saw a gradual increase in cooperation between the two. Zakala, who saw that he was having difficulty obtaining materials in the Samaria region for the preparation of explosive devices for his terrorist cell, asked Khalf to take advantage of his access to such substances as an Israeli citizen. In March 2005, Khalf purchased materials used to manufacture explosives, including potassium and sulfur, and hid them in paper bags, traveling to Tulkarm to hand them over to the Zakala.”

“Zakala’s terror cell worked diligently, and its members were able to assemble explosives using the materials Khalf provided, producing at least nine improvised explosive devices. During an ambush on an IDF force in the Tulkarm area, they hurled one of the explosives.
'Time to throw pro-terror Arab MK out of the Knesset'
Communication Minister Ayoub Kara (Likud) has called for a member of the Arab Joint List party to be stripped of his Knesset seat after he participated in a celebration marking the release of a convicted terrorist from prison.

Speaking with Arutz Sheva, Kara said the Knesset should strip MK Abd al-Hakim Haj Yahya of his seat, after it was revealed that Haj Yahya took part in a celebration last week for Mohammed Khalf, a resident of Jatt who was freed after a 12-year prison sentence for terror activity.

According to a report by Yediot Ahronot, Khalf had become involved in terror through his acquaintance with a Hamas terrorist by the name of Wael Zakala, whom Khalf employed in his carpentry business.

Following the revelation, Minister Kara spoke with Arutz Sheva, calling for Haj Yahya’s removal from the Knesset.

“We need to remove terror collaborators who meet with terrorists from the Knesset; nothing less will do.”
6 Mossad teams to be honored for secret missions
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to institute a tradition of awarding commendations of merit to Mossad intelligence and special operations teams.

For the first time, such honors will be awarded not by the president, but rather by the prime minister, with Mossad Director Yossi Cohen in attendance.

This year's commendations will be awarded for to six Mossad teams for operations carried out this past year, all in secret and across the globe.

During his years in office, Netanyahu has increased the Mossad's budget, allowing it to widen its operations and use of cutting-edge technology.
Commanders and security officer reprimanded
The IDF completed its operational investigation into the stabbing murders in the village of Halamish-Neve Tzuf, in which three members of the Salomon family were massacred by an Arab who infiltrated the community.

According to the operational debriefing, there were a number of failures that allowed the terrorist to infiltrate Neve Tzuf: Failure to carry out the army's pre-incident instructions, failure to implement instructions to the civilian security establishment, and delay in installing additional planned technological security components in the village.

Following the investigation, the regional defense commander of the Binyamin brigade received a command note from the Binyamin Brigade commander regarding the failure to comply with procedures. In addition, the sector company commander was reprimanded by the Kfir Brigade commander for failing to implement mandatory orders to protect the village.

In addition, the commander of the military patrol who was in charge of the village's area was punished by the Kfir Brigade commander with 21 days of confinement to base because he did not comply with the binding procedures during his tour mission. The civilian security officer of the village was reprimanded by the brigade commander for leaving the community without reporting it to the company and non-compliance with procedures.

The deputy civilian security officer and the gate guard ended their duties due to lack of professionalism and failure to comply with binding procedures. The vehicular patrol operating in the village at the time of the incident received a note of reprimand about his performance.
Terrorist who murdered top policeman sentenced to 2 life terms
Ziad, previously convicted as a Hamas terrorist and sentenced to life in prison only to be released in the 2011 Gilad Shalit deal, shot and killed Mizrahi and wounded two children on April 14, 2014 near the Tarkumia checkpoint in the West Bank.

Mizrahi's high rank and the fact that Awad was released in the Schalit deal swung Israeli opinion decisively against prisoner exchanges and spurred a wave of new legislation to reduce the government's ability to conduct such deals.

In addition, at the start of July 2014, Awad's residence became the first West Bank Palestinian home to get demolished by Israel since 2005, when Israel announced a moratorium on the punitive practice against terrorists' families. That turning point has led Israel to much wider use of house demolitions against terrorists in recent years.

Ziad's son, Iz-Adin, 18, was sentenced to 20 years in jail for aiding him in the murder.

Ziad, 42, was indicted on June 23, 2014 following his arrest in May 2014 by the Shin Bet (Israel Security Service) and police commandos, on suspicion that he had stood by the side of Route 35 shooting at passing vehicles, including the one driven by Mizrahi as he drove with his family to a Passover seder.
Israel to impose 11-day closure of West Bank and Gaza for Sukkot holiday
The West Bank and Gaza Strip will be completely sealed off for 11 days from the start of Sukkot holiday through the following Shabbat, the Defense Ministry confirmed on Monday.

All crossing in and out of the West Bank and Gaza will be closed to Palestinians beginning Wednesday October 4 until Wednesday, October 14, with the exception of humanitarian, medical and exceptional cases made with the approval of the IDF’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the territories (COGAT).

Israel regularly imposes closures on the West Bank and Gaza for Jewish holidays, but week-long festivals like Sukkot usually only have closures imposed at the end of the holiday.

The rare move was approved by Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman following a deadly shooting attack in the West Bank settlement of Har Adar last week, in which three Israelis, a border police officer and two civilian security guards, were killed by Palestinian Nimer Mahmoud Ahmad Jamal who had a permit to work in settlements.

The closure will impact tens of thousands of Palestinians who legally work in Israel every day.
IsraellyCool: Palestinians Invent Flag Day
In the spirit of inventing things, the palestinians have invented Flag Day..to commemorate hoisting their flag at the UN two years ago.

Seriously.
Palestinians celebrated on Saturday Flag Day marking two years since the hoisting of the Palestinian flag at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who attended the flag hoisting ceremony at the time, has declared September 30 of every year as Palestinian Flag Day.

The flag was raised for the first time at the UN headquarters alongside flags of 193 other member states after the UN General Assembly voted 119 in favor to eight opposed and 45 abstentions to allow hoisting the flag at the UN building, making it the first time a flag of a non-member state is raised there.

Palestine became a non-member state on 29 November 2012.

I guess there have not been enough murders of Israelis for their liking, so they need to find other excuses to celebrate.
Reports: Libya Accuses Hamas of Plotting Attacks, Smuggling Weapons
Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum has released a special statement denying the claims of government officials in Libya that local authorities arrested a Hamas cell involved in weapons smuggling and terrorist plots.

Al Sadiq al-Sour, a spokesman for Libya’s attorney general, was quoted by local media saying in a special press conference that a cell of four Hamas members had been arrested under suspicion of weapons smuggling and leaking information regarding Libyan national security.

The attorney general said that the four had been in the city of Benghazi before moving to the capital of Tripoli where they were arrested.

According to reports, Sour also claimed that the Hamas cell was involved in plots to commit local attacks and others against Algeria.

The Hamas spokesperson rejected the claims as lacking any foundation.

“I’m not surprised at the reference to Hamas in connection to Libya’s internal struggles. This isn’t the first time it’s been done,” said Barhoum.

According to the Hamas spokesman, the organization was being pulled into the scandal with the purpose of “harming the movement and its reliability and causing the nations of the region who support the resistance to put doubt in it and the depth of the Palestinian issue.”
Egypt secretly ordered more than 30,000 grenades from North Korea — report
Egypt ordered more than 30,000 rocket-propelled grenades from North Korea in a clandestine sanctions-busting deal last year that was foiled at the last minute by the US, the Washington Post reported on Monday.

The discovery, which led to what a United Nations report later described as the “largest seizure of ammunition in the history of sanctions against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” exposed one in a series of secret deals between the two countries that prompted US complaints to Egypt and the Trump administration’s decision over the summer to freeze or delay military aid to Cairo worth nearly $300 million.

The ship carrying the weapons to Egypt was spotted in the summer of 2016 by US intelligence, which tracked it as it left North Korea with a North Korean crew and watched it sail westward toward the Gulf of Aden and the Suez Canal.

The US alerted Egyptian authorities through diplomatic channels. The vessel, which was flying Cambodian colors, carried heavy tarpaulin covering unknown cargo.

Egyptian customs agents were waiting when the ship entered Egypt’s waters outside of the Suez Canal. They discovered the weapons hidden under rocks of iron ore: more than 24,000 rocket-propelled grenades, and completed components for 6,000 more.
Egypt 'hunting down' gays, conducting forced anal exams
Six Egyptian men arrested for “promoting sexual deviancy” and “debauchery” on social media will be subjected to anal examinations ahead of their Oct. 1 trial, Amnesty International said on Saturday.

Their arrest is part of a wider crackdown against homosexuality that started last week when a group of people were seen raising a rainbow flag at a concert, a rare public show of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights in the conservative Muslim country.

At least 11 people have since been arrested, Amnesty said, and one man has been sentenced to six years in jail after local media launched a highly critical campaign against those who raised the rainbow flag at a Mashrou’ Leila concert, a popular Lebanese alternative rock band whose lead singer is openly gay.

Amnesty said the Forensic Medical Authority was due to subject the six men to anal examinations to determine whether they have had homosexual sex.

Judicial sources said any defendant accused of “debauchery” or “sexual deviancy,” a euphemism for homosexuality in Egypt, is subjected to a medical examination based on an order from the Public Prosecutor.
Reversing Iran's progress
Hopes in the West that Iran would become more moderate after the 2015 nuclear deal (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) between it and world powers in 2015 have gradually been replaced with fears about Iran's worrying behavior. While Tehran is trying to be seen sticking to the nuclear deal, it limits the activities of the inspectors, continues nuclear research and development and devotes efforts to its long-range missile program.

As such, Iranian involvement in the region proves its hegemonic aspirations, based on Persian imperialistic interests, not to mention jihadist impulses. It already controls four Arab capitals: Baghdad, Beirut, Damascus and Sanaa. The Shiite militias and its envoys fight in Iraq, Syria and Yemen through ethnic cleansing. Iran is on the brink of securing a Shiite corridor from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea.

Israel is trying to take advantage of both global fears and U.S. President Donald Trump's lack of commitment to the nuclear deal, which he displays to bring about either its cancellation or the start of new negotiations to obtain a better deal by reimplementing economic sanctions. But these goals are very hard to reach and will do nothing to help prevent Iran's going nuclear.

The international community, including the U.S., has no desire to clash with Iran. Most of the world prefers to wait until the deal expires in another decade, without considering what will happen the day after. Despite this, Iran, with a history that goes back thousands of years, sees the deal as only a short delay before reaching its aspirations. By understanding that the West not willing to take military options, Iran is imitating what happened with North Korea.
BBC Radio 5 live presenter tells listeners Iran is a ‘democracy’
The ensuing item included two barely audible phone interviews with contributors in the US – Dr Stephen Noerper of the Korea Society and Dr Mohsen Milani of the University of South Florida. The second interview (from 22:07) began with Adebayo asking Dr Milani:

“What are your thoughts about these latest tweets from Donald Trump essentially tying Iran and its own nuclear capabilities – whether it be domestic or whether it be for military purposes – with that of North Korea?”

Milani pointed out that Iran’s “close collaboration with North Korea” in developing missile technology “is not anything new”, stating that Iranian missiles are copies of North Korean ones. He went on to say that he does not see similarities between North Korea and Iran because the former is a “declared nuclear power with the capability to deliver a nuclear bomb “, while the latter, according to him, does not have those capabilities.

Adebayo’s response to that statement was as follows:
“Yeah that’s a clear difference, isn’t it, in terms of their capabilities but also I imagine that Iran doesn’t want to be associated in the international community’s mind with being the same as a dictatorship where there is no freedom of political thought. To a certain extent Iran is what we would describe as a democracy, isn’t it?”

Given the very bad quality of the phone line, listeners would have had difficulty understanding Milani’s reply to that but may have made out the statement according to which the political system in Iran is “fundamentally different” from that in North Korea and that it is “significantly, substantially more open, as you correctly suggested”.
Seth Frantzman: Post-Referendum: Kurds in Iran Demand Rights as Regime Cracks Down
Last Sunday, on the eve of the independence referendum by the Kurdistan Regional Government in northern Iraq, Iranian Kurds began celebrating. The next day, as people went to the polls across the border in Sulaimaniya, Erbil and other cities, Kurds in Iran celebrated en masse. In Baneh, Mahabad and Sanandaj, Iran, videos showed thousands in the streets, many of them with Kurdish flags.

Three days later, black-clad police rolled into towns and Islamic Revolutionary Guards and Basij militia began detaining dozens, accusing them of organizing the demonstrations.

The swelling of popular excitement about voting in the Kurdish region of Iraq is particularly important to Kurds in Iran because they have been deprived of many civil rights for decades.

“There has been a greater impact in eastern Kurdistan [aka Rojhelet, in Iran] because we called on the people to support the referendum,” says Mustafa Hijri, leader of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (KDPI). “This provided the opportunity for people to oppose the regime and express discontent with its oppressive policies.”

In 2015, the KDPI launched a new phase of what it terms struggle against the Iranian regime. “It consists of linking the struggle of Peshmerga [armed Kurdish forces] with civil resistance in the cities.

The strategy of the party among the population is to encourage resistance.”

There have been clashes between the Peshmerga and Iranian forces, and Iran fears provoking a larger rebellion by suppressing the Kurds more. Seeing masses on the streets with Kurdish flags is exactly what it has feared.
Eli Lake: The U.S. Must Tell Its Allies to Back Off the Kurds
The U.S. has some credibility with Iraq and Turkey on this issue. It publicly urged the Kurds not to go forward with the referendum. But now that the referendum has happened, it's important to take a step back. This is not a declaration of independence. This vote begins a process of negotiating a separation, something Kurdish regional leaders have said they very much desire. That's not politically feasible at the moment for Abadi, who will stand for election next year. At the same time, he can delay the negotiations without waging a civil war. That's the message his American allies need to send to him.

The stakes are high. As Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, the Washington representative of Iraq's Kurdistan Regional Government, told me Wednesday: "The threats don't work against Kurds, and it's much better to engage in dialogue with us now." She added: "Baghdad and Erbil still need to cooperate against ISIS and the humanitarian crisis in Iraq. All we've done is hold a referendum. We have not unilaterally declared independence."

The Iraqis, Iranians and Turks have chosen to ignore this important fact and treat a democratic vote among Kurds as a de facto declaration of independence. It's a dangerous overreaction. America needs to persuade its allies to simmer down.

Why is the US against Kurdish independence?
"The vote and the results lack legitimacy," U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson declared, referring to recent events in Kurdistan. Similar remarks were made by the U.S. ambassador in Baghdad, Douglas A. Silliman, and U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy Brett McGurk.

The American opposition to Kurdish independence take us back in time 70 years, when the leadership of the Jewish population in prestate Israel announced its plan to declare independence. In response, the U.S. State Department began working assiduously, sometimes making threats, to scupper that decision. Then-Secretary of State Gen. George Marshall, who was covered in glory after World War II, as well as the entire American foreign policy and defense establishment, took a firm stance against the establishment of the Jewish state.

Their official reasons (other than the anti-Semitism that was rife in the State Department and the defense and intelligence establishments) were very similar to Washington's arguments against Kurdish independence – namely, that it will destabilize the region. Then, like now, oil factors into the U.S. position. Back in the day, American officials were worried that supporting the Jewish state would endanger the supply of Arab oil to America and its relations with the Arab world in general. This time, America is afraid that the Kurds' intent to control Kirkuk, one of Iraq's main oil-producing areas, will hurt the chance of it developing good relations with the government in Baghdad, including on oil issues.
Dozens Arrested in Iran for Celebrating Kurdistan Referendum
The Iranian government arrested scores of Kurdish civilians in Rojhelat this week following the historic “yes” vote for Kurdish independence on Monday.

The Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI) and the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN), two Iranian-Kurdish political parties, said that “Iranian intelligence and security forces have set up a joint command center ‘for the purpose of identifying and arresting the organizers of the demonstrations,'” according to Rudaw.

“Iranian state television on Tuesday acknowledged the rallies, a rarity in the Islamic Republic broadcast,” KHRN said. Furthermore, KHRN noted that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and regular armed forces were carrying out military exercises near the Kurdistan border.

The Iranian Kurds were reportedly waving the flag of Kurdistan, chanting “Biji Kurdistan!” (“Long live Kurdistan!”) and singing the Kurdish national anthem. Flying the Kurdistan flag and singing the national anthem are forbidden in Iran.

Kurdistan 24 posted video of Kurds celebrating in the city of Baneh:

According to Rudaw, “One of the biggest parties was held in the city of Sanandaj,” where nearly 20,000 people participated.
Following Netanyahu’s Support for Kurds, Palestine Renames Itself ‘Kurdistan II’ (satire)
Citing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s support for “the legitimate efforts of the Kurdish people to achieve a state of their own,” Palestinian leaders say that they will again pursue statehood but instead call their country “Kurdistan II.”

“After eight years of putting off serious discussions about the creation of a state, we were beginning to wonder whether Bibi believed in legitimate political rights altogether,” Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told The Mideast Beast. “As it turns out, it was just our name that was holding things up.”

Following suit, after Turkish president and Palestinian champion Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s vocal opposition to Kurdish independence, the Kurds announce that they will now call their newly-declared state “Palestine B.”

Writing in The Forward (where else?) Stephen Walt - one of the co-authors of the book widely derided as antisemitic, "The Israel Lobby," ten years ago - continues his propaganda, claiming that "history proves us right":

Unfortunately for Israel as well as the United States, the past 10 years provide ample evidence that our core argument is still correct. ...

The clearest illustration of the lobby’s enduring power is the Obama administration’s failure to make any progress on settling the Israel-Palestinian conflict. President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry were strong supporters of Israel, and both believe a two-state solution is, as Obama put it, “in Israel’s interest, Palestine’s interest, America’s interest and the world’s interest.” But even with backing from pro-peace, pro-Israel organizations such as J Street, their efforts to achieve “two states for two peoples” were rebuffed by Israel, working hand in hand with AIPAC and other hard-line groups. So instead of seriously pursuing peace, Israel expanded its settlements in the Israeli-occupied territories, making it more difficult than ever to create a viable Palestinian state.

Given AIPAC’s enduring influence in Congress and its unyielding opposition to any meaningful compromise with the Palestinians, Obama and Kerry ultimately could offer Israel only additional carrots (such as increased military aid) to try to win their cooperation. Like their predecessors, they could not put pressure on Israel to compromise by threatening to reduce U.S. support significantly. As a result, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had little incentive to make a deal. The result is that the two-state solution, which the United States has long sought and Netanyahu has long opposed, is now further away than ever. This outcome is bad for the United States and for Israel.

Haaretz reported last summer that the US proposed a peace plan in 2014 that Netanyahu accepted and that Abbas rejected. They then sweetened it and Abbas never responded.

Walt is, simply, a liar. It wasn't Israeli intransigence that impeded peace - it was Palestinian rejectionism. Netanyahu accepted it. AIPAC would have accepted it.

The facts are clear, but Walt doesn't want you to know the facts. He wants to pretend that J-Street is a powerful movement for peace that assisted Obama instead of an obscure group that Obama raised in order to counter AIPAC and the wishes of most American Jews and Zionists - including those of us who desperately want peace.

He doesn't want to mention Obama's allowing an anti-Israel resolution to pass in the UN Security Council, instead pretending that even Obama was forced to kneel before the all-powerful lobby that he ignored.

He doesn't want to mention that the Obama administration's coddling of Abbas and the PA, offering only carrots and no sticks, is what contributed to Abbas' intransigence - by Abbas' own words.

Later on, showing how Walt is lying when he pretends to want peace and is working in Israel's own interests, he refers to the rabidly anti-Israel "Jewish Voice for Peace" as a "progressive group".

The anti-Israel crowd has no arguments - so they must resort to lies. And The Forward is their medium of choice (along with Haaretz, which has not revisited its own scoop so as not to remind readers that the "extremist right-wing Likud" was the party that wants peace and the "moderate peace-loving Palestinians" are the ones who consistently reject any attempts.

Varda forwarded to me a message that a friend of hers received from the US Social Security Administration last week:
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has consolidated its overseas operations into several regional offices that provide a full range of SSA services for U.S. citizens residing outside of the United States. Effective this Sunday (October 1, 2017), individuals residing in Israel who require social security services or have questions about SSA benefits must contact the SSA Federal Benefits Unit (FBU) located at the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem, rather than the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv or the U.S. Consular Agency in Haifa.

Among the most common Social Security services that the Embassy and the Consular Agency can no longer provide is the acceptance of the SS-5 (Application for a Social Security Card) associated with Consular Report of Birth Abroad applications; applicants will need to submit those directly to the Federal Benefits Unit in Jerusalem. Individuals of any age seeking to apply for a first-time or replacement Social Security card will also need to submit their applications directly to the Federal Benefits Unit in Jerusalem.

Please, be advised that as of this Sunday (October 1, 2017) the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv and the U.S. Consular Agency in Haifa can no longer accept telephone calls, emails, or walk-in consultations regarding Social Security issues, including inquiries from individuals seeking to determine whether they have ever been issued a Social Security number.

For more information or any questions about the services provided at the Federal benefits Unit in Jerusalem and how to contact them, please visit their webpage at: http://ift.tt/2xaAMDK. You can also reach them at FBU.Jerusalem@ssa.gov.
Why would the US move some of its services from its embassy in Tel Aviv to a consulate in Jerusalem only?

This news directly contradicts how the US Consulate webpage describes its historic functions:
The American Citizen Services Unit of U.S. Consulate General Jerusalem provides information and assistance to U.S. citizens in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza.  U.S. citizens visiting or residing outside these areas are served by the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv.
Could this be a subtle move by David Friedman to move some of the embassy functions from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem?

The Waqf issued a statement claiming that Israel "attacked"Muslim holy sites 110 times in September.

Here are some of the "attacks" they mention:

The occupation forces assaulted one of the guards of Al-Aqsa Mosque...
They arrested a member of the reconstruction committee, and removed another from his work place for 15 days....The occupation has been working for years on the establishment of Talmudic gardens in the vicinity of the historic wall of Jerusalem to obliterate the Arab monuments and give a Talmudic character to the holy city....
The occupation, as usual, especially on Friday, intensifies its strict measures in the city, erecting barricades, military barriers on the gates of the Old City near the Al-Aqsa Mosque, running foot patrols in Old Jerusalem, and horses in the streets and adjacent roads, while a helicopter and a radar plane flew over the holy city to observe the worshipers.
...The continuation of the so-called "alleged temple" organizations and their incitement to the Al-Aqsa Mosque and worshipers, amid calls for more intrusions, especially during their holidays.
The Antiquities Authority, accompanied by a military officer, stormed the Marwani chapel, and carried out a suspicious and provocative exploratory tour in the area
Members of the Knesset broke into the Aqsa Mosque and the continuation of the policy of political, economic and technological siege on the Al Aqsa and the city
In the Ibrahimi Mosque, the occupation prevented the prayer from being heard for 65 days, and closed it for four days with the pretext of the holidays (how they closed it for 65 days in September is a mystery)
In the area of the airport, the Israeli occupation forces and their crews stormed the neighborhood and photographed residential buildings in the neighborhood, including a mosque threatened with demolition.
I'm sure some NGOs are taking note of these statistics so they can launder them into new reports showing the "increase of Israeli attacks on Muslim holy places enumerated by religious officials."

How can anyone be expected to blog when all these holidays are piling up next to each other!

Here's an open thread. Not that you guys need one!

By the way, Son-In-Law of Ziyon mentioned to me that certain brands of bamboo fencing sold at Home Depot are kosher for the schach (sukkah roof.) I bought three 6x16  versions of these for $25 each this morning, an incredible bargain compared to bamboo mats that are sold in Judaica stores.

From Ian:

Israel Is Going to War in Syria to Fight Iran
Looked at from Israel, this process is a mixed bag. Sunni Islamists are hostile to Israel, of course, and for the most part, their failure to assemble a lasting power bloc is welcomed in Jerusalem. Senior Israeli security officials describe, for example, Sisi’s 2013 coup deposing the Muslim Brotherhood as a species of “miracle.” In Syria, however, the insurgent efforts of the Sunni Islamists had at least the benefit of distracting the attentions of the more formidable enemy — the Iran-led regional bloc. For five years, Israel was largely able to sit by while Sunni and Shiite political Islam were in a death’s embrace just north and east of the border. Russian and Iranian intervention, however, appears to have tipped the balance against the Sunni rebels, threatening to bring the long chapter of active civil war in Syria to a close.

From an Israeli point of view, we are back to the pre-2010 Middle East, when Israel and pro-western Sunni powers understood they were in a direct faceoff with the Iranians and their allies. But in 2017, there is the additional complicating factor of a direct Russian physical presence in the Levant, in alliance or at least in cooperation with Israel’s enemies.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, which remains exclusively focused on the war against the Islamic State, has done little to assuage Israeli concerns. Trump and those around him, of course, share the Israeli assessment regarding the challenge of Iranian regional ambitions. The impression, however, is that the administration may well not be sufficiently focused or concerned to actually take measures necessary to halt the Iranian advance — both military and political — in Syria, Iraq, or Lebanon.

Where does this leave Israel?

First, Israel’s diplomatic avenues to the international power brokers in Syria remain open. When it comes to Washington, Israel’s task is to locate or induce a more coherent American strategy to counter advance of the Iranians in the Levant. Its goal when it comes to Moscow is to ensure sufficient leeway from Putin, who has no ideological animus against Israel and no special sympathy for Tehran, so that Israel can take the measures it deems necessary to halt or deter the Iranians and their proxies.

Second, Israel will continue to rely on its military defenses, which remain without peer in the region. And as shown in Masyaf, they can be employed to halt and deter provocative actions by the Iran-led bloc where necessary. Nevertheless, as seen from Jerusalem, the shifting regional tectonic plates are producing a new situation in which the Iran-led alliance is once again directly facing Israel, consequently raising the possibility of direct confrontation. Masyaf was not the first shot in the fight between Israel and its proxies in the Levant — and it is unlikely to be the last.
Abbas: I will continue terrorist payments
Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas reiterated his support for Arabs who were captured or killed while committing terrorist attacks against Israeli citizens.

In an interview with Al-Quds Al-Arabi, Abbas stated that, "Israel incites the US to see prisoners and martyrs as terrorists. They are soldiers and the sons of our nation...and they are the martyrs of the Palestinian people. And since then (1965), we have provided them [and their families] with allowances."

"Israel and the US says that this is supporting terrorism...I will not back down on this issue. The families of the martyrs will continue to receive their allowances in full." he added.

In response to the question of whether the allowances will continue to be extended to prisoners in Israeli prisons, Abbas answered, "certainly."

NY Post Editorial: Interpol’s invitation to terrorism
It’s hard to think the world could get more dangerous, but it just did — as Interpol accepted the nonexistent “state of Palestine” as a member. Who’s next, ISIS?

In a secret ballot Wednesday by the international police group’s General Assembly, 75 nations agreed to accept the Palestinians’ bid for inclusion, with 24 voting nay and 34 abstentions.
see also

The secrecy ensured that no country would pay a price for its vote, so nations were free to express their true anti-Israel/anti-Semitic hostility — and thus provide a better (and more depressing) picture of how extensive that hate really is.

Make no mistake: Israel has much to lose here. It’s not just that yet another international body has recognized “Palestine” (the UN, UNESCO and other groups have all offered it some form of membership), thereby boosting its standing.

Worse: Palestinians can now try to use Interpol to push bogus “law-enforcement” efforts (travel bans, extraditions, etc.) aimed at Israelis. Worse yet: Sensitive Interpol intel may fall into the hands of Palestinian terror groups.

Think about it: Washington has designated Hamas, one of the two groups that run “Palestine,” as a terrorist organization. The other, the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority, also backs terror, albeit less systematically.

Just this week, Fatah praised Tuesday’s attack by a Palestinian terrorist that left three Israelis dead. The PA reportedly will pay his family $1,700, plus $740 a month for life.

Why Did the European Parliament Embrace a Palestinian Terrorist?
The European Parliament is not the only platform where this kind of behavior has played out; it is only the latest. United Nations agencies like the Human Rights Council and UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), and even the World Health Organization seek, on a routine basis, to deny, minimize or rewrite Jewish history to fit the Khaled narrative.

The boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement, which is closely aligned with this worldview, specializes in comparing Israel with apartheid-era South Africa, and accusing Israeli authorities of ethnic cleansing.

The Khaled event at the European Parliament was not something hidden or unknown to those who peruse the international body’s weekly calendar. Someone made a decision to approve its being placed on the schedule.

To be fair, some members of the parliament have spoken out against Khaled’s appearance in Brussels, as has the European Commission’s coordinator on combating antisemitism.

Yet with so many EU heads of government, foreign ministers and other officials proffering comments about the need to defeat the growing threat of terrorism on the continent, where are those voices expressing outrage over the invitation to a convicted terrorist — who remains a “member of the political bureau” of one of the deadliest of terror organizations — to speak at one of the EU’s central institutions?

In trying to explain this, words like “hypocrisy” and “indifference” come to mind, along with simple political correctness. But it is more than that: Haven’t those in leadership positions in Brussels learned anything from decades of violence espoused by Khaled, her contemporaries and now, by Hezbollah, Hamas and ISIS? If nothing else, have they no self-respect?

The recent list of terrorist attacks in Europe is long, and growing. At the EU, some may have short memories, but surely the families of victims in Paris, Nice, London, Brussels, Copenhagen and so many other places, do not.

The citizens of a united Europe deserve better.
IsraellyCool: Leila Khaled’s Antisemitism and Genocidal Wishes Receives Applause In European Parliament
Several days ago, palestinian terrorist Leila Khaled – a former PFLP member who was involved in multiple hijackings and has been credited as the first woman to hijack an airplane – was invited to speak to the European Parliament, who hosted an event “The Role of Women in the Palestinian Popular Resistance.”

Not surprisingly, she revealed herself to a vile Jew hater who loves making Israel-Nazi comparisons – and declared her desire to have Israel Jew-free.

Note the applause – this was no hijacking. They knew who they were getting, and they loved every minute of it.

Ron Prosor: Israel must not let Arab states hijack UNESCO
Sometimes, it seems as if Israel is suffering from some kind of personality disorder that makes it fall in love with complaining about a disease rather than preventing it.

The elections for the post of UNESCO director-general will be held in two weeks. This is Israel’s chance to show some initiative and active diplomacy, but it seems to have been caught off guard.

Of the nine nominations for the position, four come from Arab countries—Qatar, Iraq, Lebanon and an Egyptian representative who is in favor of applying Sharia laws. What we do know is that the election of an Iranian chairperson has already been secured. The only education a Qatari-Iranian coalition in UNESCO will offer the world is education to terror, hatred and extremism.

The State of Israel is well aware of that, as UNESCO concerns many bodies—government ministries, local authorities and plenty of organizations and NGOs. Everyone knows how important these elections are, but they seem to be continuing their summer vacation and have yet to do a thing to promote the election of a professional and decent director-general for the organization.

This is exactly where Israel must use diplomatic counter-terrorism: identify the challenge, detect ways of action and create coalitions that will make it possible to reach the desired result.

Instead of fighting specific decisions, Israel must try to change the agenda. Instead of letting the Arab states hijack UNESCO for anti-Israel incitement purposes, Israel must try to influence the organization’s leadership. Instead of complaining in retrospect, Israel must wake up and act.
2 stabbed to death at Marseille train station
A suspected Islamist knifeman killed two women at the main train station in the French Mediterranean city of Marseille on Sunday before being shot dead by soldiers patrolling there, local officials and police said.

One of the victims was fatally stabbed while the other had her throat slit by the assailant who is believed to have shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is Greatest) at the start of his rampage, a source close to the investigation told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Soldiers posted in the station as part of a special force set up to guard vulnerable areas in terror-hit France responded to the stabbings in front of the station and shot the man dead, local officials said.

Armed police were deployed afterwards and the grand and ornate rail terminus in the bustling heart of France’s second-biggest city was evacuated, stopping all train traffic on one of the country’s busiest lines.

“Two victims have been stabbed to death,” regional police chief Olivier de Mazieres told AFP, referring to the attack which occurred at 1:45 pm (1145 GMT).
Stabbing, Truck Ramming Incident in Canada Under Investigation as Act of Terrorism
A Edmonton police officer was stabbed Saturday evening near Commonwealth Stadium and four pedestrians injured by a fleeing truck in what police are investigating as an act of terrorism.

The first attack happened when an Edmonton Police Service special duty member was stabbed by a man who had crashed a car into a police barricade outside the stadium, where the Edmonton Eskimos were hosting Winnipeg on Canadian Forces Appreciation Night.

Police chief Rod Knecht confirmed in a 3 a.m. news conference that there was an ISIS flag in the car.

Police said the officer was manning a traffic checkpoint near 93 Street and 107A Avenue when it happened at around 8:15 p.m.

Police said the suspect fled on foot after ramming a police vehicle and was still at large. A white Chevrolet Malibu could be seen smashed into the front of an Edmonton Police Service SUV.

“The officer was approached by an unknown male suspect in a vehicle at which time the suspect rammed the police cruiser,” said Edmonton Police Service spokesman Scott Pattison.
Hezbollah chief urges Jews to 'flee Palestine' while they can
The leader of Lebanese militant group Hezbollah said on Sunday that the Israeli government was pushing the region into war in Syria, Lebanon and in the Gaza Strip.

On Sunday, in a speech to followers on the occasion of Ashura, when Shiite Muslims commemorate the slaying of the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah remarked that the Israeli government did not have a "correct assessment of where this war will lead if they ignite it."

Directly addressing "the Israelis and Jews across the world," Nasrallah added that "we in the resistance have said from the beginning that our war is against the Zionists who occupy Palestinian land, not against the Jews."

"The Jews who came from all over the world need to know that they are being used as fuel for a regional war and an American plot targeting the peoples of the region," Nasrallah continued.

Addressing "religious sages" among the Jews, he said: "The government of Israel, headed by [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu, is leading you toward ruin and destruction because he is looking for war."

"If Netanyahu launches a war," he warned, "no part of occupied Palestine will be safe."

"Israel has no qualms about issuing threats to Lebanon, and it continues its aggressive approach in Syria under the guise of preventing the resistance from developing new military capabilities," he said. "Israel is using every possible excuse to drag the region into war. This war will be at your expense and you will be the ones to pay the price."
Netanyahu scoffs at Erdogan's claim that mossad behind Kurdish referendum
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shot back at Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for saying the Mossad had a hand in the Iraqi Kurdistan independence referendum last week, saying, "I understand why Hamas supporters see the Mossad in any uncomfortable situation.”

Erdogan's Turkey actively supports Hamas.

Speaking before Sunday morning’s cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said that Israel had “no involvement in the Kurdish referendum except for supporting their aspirations.”

Erdogan again went on the warpath against Israel on Saturday, saying that the waving of Israeli flags at celebrations of the Kurdistan vote for independence proved the Mossad's involvement.

“This shows one thing, that this administration (in northern Iraq) has a history with Mossad, they are hand-in-hand together,” he said. Turkey is adamantly opposed to the the Iraqi Kurdish move, concerned of the impact it will have on its own large Kurdish population.

“Are you aware of what you are doing?” Erdogan said in an appeal to Iraqi Kurdish leaders. “Only Israel supports you.”

This is the second time in a week that Erdogan lashed out at Israel over the Iraqi Kurdistan vote.
Canada urged to monitor funds sent to UNRWA
Investigative journalist David Bedein has been following the monetary machinations of the United Nations Relief and Works Administration (UNRWA) since the late 1980s and one thing that has remained constant over that time is the involvement of Hamas in pretty much everything the UN agency does.

For years, Hamas has controlled the purse strings and syphoned off cash to promote its terrorist agenda. It operates a summer camp to indoctrinate young terrorists and boasts that the students it trains come from schools operated by UNRWA. It controls the employees union and teachers union in Gaza, ensuring its cadres benefit from the cash donated by governments from around the world – including Canada – that are supposed to go to easing the plight of Palestinian refugees.

Though he’s concerned that Canada recently renewed its allocation of $25 million to UNRWA for the second year in a row, Bedein believes this country’s involvement in UNRWA funding presents an opportunity for enhanced monitoring, to ensure the money goes for the purposes it was intended.

Right now, “there is no supervision whatsoever,” he said.

Bedein, who’s the director of the Israel Resource News Agency and the Center for Near East Policy Research, was in Ottawa on Sept. 25 to brief Liberal MP Michael Levitt on Hamas and its extensive ties to UNRWA, and to suggest that Canada could play a leading role in setting up a mechanism to closely scrutinize UNRWA’s use of its funds in Gaza.
Islamic Society of British Columbia unscathed, despite alleged links to Hamas
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs is “shocked” that federal officials have not yanked the charitable status of a British Columbia Islamic charity that’s alleged to have links to Hamas.

Recent media reports have said that the charity, which runs a Vancouver-area mosque, was penalized by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), after an audit found that its former president and imam spent tens of thousands of dollars on personal expenditures that were reimbursed by the charity.

But the charity, the Islamic Society of British Columbia, retained its tax status and was not otherwise penalized, even after the audit alleged that it had ties to Hamas, which Canada listed as terrorist organization in 2002.

The Islamic Society operates the Masjid Alhidayah & Islamic Cultural Centre in Port Coquitlam, B.C. Global News reported that it was formerly headed by Saadeldin Bahr, who is now serving a 3½-year prison sentence for a 2013 sexual assault at the mosque.

CRA documents obtained by Global News showed that during the period of the audit – Oct. 1, 2010 to Sept. 30, 2013 – Bahr purchased a variety of personal items, including a spa, jewelry, video games and hair dye, which were paid for with his personal credit card and then reimbursed with online bank transfers from the charity’s accounts.
Israeli poll observer shocked by Spanish police violence during Catalonia vote
A Zionist Union MK observing Catalonia’s independence referendum said she was shocked by the use of rubber bullets by Spanish police against crowds of unarmed protesters on Sunday.

Ksenia Svetlova, who is part of a delegation of about 30 people from other countries invited by Catalan regional officials to observe the voting process, told a reporter for the Sky News TV channel that the bullets used by police “can squash somebody’s head.” She said she she saw people bleeding and injured on the scene, and that she hadn’t expected to see such tactics used in Europe.

“We did expect a normal democratic process. We knew that a lot of police were here but still, you know, there should be a respect for the will of the people to vote regardless of what you think of the referendum,” Svetlova said.

The freshman Israeli lawmaker also tweeted that ballot boxes had been confiscated and that there were “major problems with the internet.”

At least 91 people were injured in Catalonia on Sunday as police and protesters clashed over a banned independence referendum in the wealthy northeastern region of Spain, the Catalan government said.
Israel to conduct joint air force drills with Greece, Cyprus, Egypt
Greece’s defense minister says plans are being drawn up for joint air force drills with Cyprus, Israel, Egypt and European countries as part of efforts to bolster stability in the eastern Mediterranean.

Panos Kammenos’ remarks Sunday came after a military parade in the Cypriot capital to commemorate the 57th anniversary of the ethnically divided island’s independence.

The parade included the overflight of a pair of Greek Air Force F-16 jets, the first showing of the Greek warplanes at the event in 16 years.

The island’s Greek Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades said there will be no let-up in efforts to reunify Cyprus, despite July’s collapse of peace talks with breakaway Turkish Cypriots.

Russian-made BUK surface-to-air missiles were also put on the display at the parade.

Border Police, IDF seize illegal sniper rifles in West Bank village
Border Police and IDF units raided an illegal weapons factory in the West Bank Palestinian village of Bani Naim overnight Sunday, arresting an alleged arms dealer and seizing sniper rifles featuring advanced scopes and night vision.

According to police, the operation was initiated after intelligence was gathered that arms were being stored and sold at the site.
“A number of weapons equipped with telescopic lenses and night vision were found and confiscated at the scene, and one suspect was arrested and is being questioned,” said police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld.

“The sniper rifles are being examined to determine where they came from, and an investigation into why they were being stored in that area, and if they are connected in any way to terrorist activity, has been opened,” he added.

Police and IDF forces routinely investigate illegal arms manufacturing and sales in the West Bank, where the weapons frequently end up in the hands of terrorists who carry out attacks in Jerusalem and nearby Jewish settlements.

“Operations are continuing across Judea and Samaria in order to find terrorist cells and prevent weapons from being used in any terrorist activity,” said Rosenfeld.
NGO demands Interpol arrest Hamas leader who masterminded terror attacks against Israel
An Israeli NGO demanded that Interpol take “all necessary steps to arrest Hamas leader and terrorist Saleh al-Arouri for his role in two infamous crimes against Israelis.”

The two terrorist attacks were the kidnapping and murder of three teenagers near Hebron in 2014, and the shooting murder of a rabbi and his wife near Nablus in 2015.

Shurat Hadin – Israel Law Center sent the demand letter to Interpol on Thursday, one day after the international organization’s decision to accept the “State of Palestine” as a member. Israel had fought a hard diplomatic fight to block the Palestinians getting membership.

Arouri is a member of Hamas’s politburo and, according to Shurat Hadin, is known to direct terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas’s Izzadin Kassam Brigades in Israel from abroad.

Shurat Hadin president Nitsana Darshan-Leitner represents the family of Naftali Fraenkel, a dual-US/Israeli citizen who, along with two other boys, Eyal Yifrah and Gil-Ad Shaer, was kidnapped and murdered in a terrorist attack carried out on June 12, 2014.

The attack was orchestrated by Arouri when he was residing in Turkey.
'Key goal of Palestinian Interpol bid is to prosecute Dahlan'
Palestinian media reported over the weekend that the Palestinian Authority, on the heels of being accepted as a member state to the international police agency Interpol, will pursue arrest warrants against former high-ranking Fatah official Mohammed Dahlan and several of his associates.

A senior PA official was quoted as saying that "Dahlan and his associates Mohammad Rashid and Walid Najab will be placed on our Interpol list of fugitives.

"Dahlan and his associates, along with other Palestinians, are accused of stealing public funds and acts of corruption, and the objective of joining Interpol was first and foremost to issue warrants for their arrests and bring them to justice," the official said.

Dahlan fled from PA-controlled areas in the West Bank several years ago, after he was charged with corruption and security-related offenses. Since then, he has alternately resided in Persian Gulf states and in Egypt.

Dahlan has refuted the allegations, saying the PA security apparatus fabricated the charges against him, under orders from PA President Mahmoud Abbas, a bitter political rival.
Sick of running Gaza, Hamas may be aiming to switch to a Hezbollah-style role
It is a simple idea, at least in theory: Allow the Palestinian Authority to run ongoing affairs in the Gaza Strip, to worry about electricity, water, sewage, social welfare, unemployment, and so on, while making sure that Hamas’s military wing retains all its weaponry.

That way, Hamas continues to be the powerhouse on the ground in the Gaza Strip, while the PA will have to deal with the dreary, thankless day-to-day affairs. For all the support for unity, Hamas officials have said explicitly that they do not intend to give up the “arms of the resistance” — the same term that Hezbollah uses in Lebanon.

There are several key issues of dispute on which the two sides can potentially reach agreement. The problem of the Hamas government officials hired after the 2007 coup — approximately 45,000 of them — can be solved. If both sides are willing, a mechanism can be found (perhaps according to the “Swiss model” once proposed by a Swiss diplomat who visited Gaza a number of times). Close to 20,000 of them are members of the civilian police force, the civil defense force and agencies created to deal with the personal security of Gaza’s inhabitants. The PA could hire them for its official agencies, even though these are already terribly bloated.

Another factor to bear in mind in this regard: the international community’s response. Reconciliation with Hamas, and an agreement that the PA is to pay the salaries of, say, 16,000 to 20,000 members of the security forces who were Hamas officials until moments earlier, would likely cause problems in the transfer of aid to the Palestinian Authority.

The Taylor Force Act, which will limit American aid to the PA due to Abbas’s payments to the families of terrorists, is expected to pass in Congress in December. This may be one of the factors spurring Abbas to accelerate the process of reconciliation.
Hamas masquerade
It took Hamas 10 years to completely ruin the Gaza Strip and prove to all that it can't and is not worthy of ruling over its inhabitants. A decade after the terrorist organization forcefully seized control of the coastal enclave its government has crumbled, but more importantly, the situation for the people of Gaza has never been more desperate. Unemployment and poverty are rampant, quality of life is in sharp decline and infrastructure is collapsing. There has only been steady progress in one area – tunnel digging along the border with Israel is prospering and the group has expanded its missile arsenal.

The first place Hamas has looked for a solution is Tehran, which is looking to bring the group back into its fold after several years of severed ties. The Arab spring revolution in Egypt and Syria distanced Hamas from Iran, bringing it closer to Turkey and even Qatar. These Sunni countries have been a disappointment and their ability to help the organization has been and remains limited. Hamas can only receive unlimited weapons and money from the Iranians, even if doing so means it must sharply alter its positions. This pertains, for example, to the Sunni rebel groups in Syria, which Hamas has supported over the years but now must abandon.

At the same time Hamas is also working to improve its relations with the Palestinian Authority; more precisely it is trying to turn the PA into a human shield to perpetuate its rule over Gaza. In this context, Hamas' leaders declared an end to the "Hamas government" in Gaza, and their willingness to give the keys to Gaza to the Palestinian national unity government sitting in Ramallah. This is merely a charade, however, as Hamas is unwilling to truly relinquish its power and will not allow, for instance, the PA's security apparatus to deploy in Gaza. In this vein, it will permit the PA and its president, Mahmoud Abbas, to resolve the electricity crisis in Gaza and to try improving the economic situation there. Meanwhile, Hamas will still reserve ultimate say in Gaza and will be the only entity with weapons.
Blair blasts Roger Waters for comparing Israel to Nazi Germany
Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair excoriated rock singer and guitarist Roger Waters late Saturday night after the Pink Floyd front man compared Israel to Nazi Germany, and warned of the dangers posed by the “extraordinarily powerful” Jewish lobby.

A frequent critic of the Jewish state and a staunch supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) Movement, Waters recently claimed that the “parallels [between Israel] and what went on in the 1930s in Germany are so crushingly obvious,” and adding that the “extraordinarily powerful” Jewish lobby was exerting a dangerous influence in the West.

When filmmaker Ian Halperin, who is producing a documentary on Waters’ and his political views, interviewed Blair, the former Labour PM condemned Waters’ comments as “ideological poison”, the Daily Mail reported.

“I think the criticism [of Israel by Waters] is so ludicrous,” said Blair, “that it indicates a basic hostility to the notion of a homeland for the Jewish people... you’ve got to overcome the legacy of that ideological poison which has dripped into the system over many decades.”

Blair added that he saw Waters’ extreme anti-Israel position as part of a strengthening “leftist-Islamist alliance”.
Jeremy Corbyn-backed group's activists 'hounded' Jewish business owner
A Jewish businessman is being hounded for selling Israeli goods by protesters with links to an organisation backed by Jeremy Corbyn.

A Palestine Solidarity Campaign activist has been found guilty of racially abusing Nisan Ayalon, who runs stalls selling Israeli cosmetics.

Ally Coutts, 57, is a prominent member of the Scottish branch of a group that has staged a series of protests against Mr Ayalon’s company Jericho SkinCare, which utilises Dead Sea minerals.

Mr Corbyn is a patron and former chairman of the London-based Palestine Solidarity campaign and remains a prominent supporter.

The treatment of Mr Ayalon, who claims he has been hounded out of Glasgow by the Scottish group, will intensify the row over anti-Semitism that has engulfed the labour party during Mr Corbyn’s stint as leader.

Jewish Human Rights Watch (JHRW) called on the Labour leader to condemn the attack on Mr Ayalon. The group had planned a further demonstration yesterday [Saturday] - on what is Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar - on one of his stalls in an Aberdeen shopping centre.
NY State probes Deutsche Bank for link to Palestinian terrorist group
The Office of the New York State Comptroller on Friday opened an investigation into accounts Deutsche Bank holds for a German political party that allegedly provides organizational support to the PFLP terrorist organization.

“As part of our policy, we are making inquiries of Deutsche Bank,” Matthew Sweeney, a spokesman for the Office of the New York State Comptroller, said after The Jerusalem Post revealed the four accounts the Marxist Leninist Party of Germany holds at Deutsche Bank and the party’s purported fund-raising for its partner in the recent German election – the pro- BDS entity the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

Both the EU and the US have designated the PFLP as a terrorist organization.

Deutsche Bank is an investor in the $200 million New York Credit Small Business Investment Company that is part of “New York’s $184.5 billion state pension fund, the third-largest public pension fund in the country,” the Comptroller’s Office said in 2015.

Deutsche Bank’s operation of the Marxist Leninist Party’s accounts raises a host of questions about terrorism financing, including whether the bank violated New York State’s anti-BDS executive order.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in 2016: “It is very simple. If you boycott against Israel, New York will boycott you.”
UK university ‘censors’ Holocaust survivor’s talk over Israel-Nazi comparison
Manchester University reportedly censored the title of a talk given by a Holocaust survivor on campus for Israel Apartheid Week this year, after Israeli diplomats intervened and argued that the title of the address, “You’re doing to the Palestinians what the Nazis did to me,” amounted to anti-Semitic hate speech.

According to a report in The Guardian this weekend, a survivor of the Budapest ghetto, Marika Sherwood, was expected to address students at the university in March on Israel and its treatment of the Palestinians, as a guest speaker for the week-long event, backed by the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. Israel Apartheid Week is held on university campuses around the world.

The paper reported that prior to the talk, Israel’s ambassador to the UK Mark Regev and civil affairs attaché Michael Freeman paid a visit to the university, after which organizers placed a ban on the “unduly provocative” title of the address and imposed a number of conditions before the talk could proceed.

The February 22 meeting between the Israeli diplomats and the university’s head of student experience, Tim Westlake, yielded an email exchange since made public by the Information Commissioner’s Office which demanded that “all correspondence between the University of Manchester and the Israeli lobby” between February 1 and March 3 be disclosed.

Freeman wrote to Westlake following their meeting, thanking him for the sit-down and asserting that the title of Sherwood’s talk breached the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of anti-Semitism, which the UK adopted late last year.
Notorious Antisemite Gilad Atzmon scheduled to speak at the Berkeley Public Library
Nothing is as damning of Gilad Atzmon as his own words:

"American Jewry makes any debate on whether the ‘Protocols of the Elders of Zion’ are an authentic document or a forgery irrelevant. American Jews do control the world."

"We must take the accusations that Jews are trying to take over the world with utmost seriousness. Israel is the Nazi Germany of our time. In fact, Israel today is worse than Nazi Germany."

"I'm not going to say whether it is right or not to burn down a synagogue, I can see that it is a rational act. "

" I think Jewish ideology is driving our planet into a catastrophe"

Gilad Atzmon's repugnant Jew-hatred has met with condemnation from groups as diverse as the ADL and Jewish Voice for Peace. He'll be back in the Bay Area Oct. 3, speaking at the North Berkeley branch of the Berkeley Public Library.

Several years ago, Gilad Atzmon's Berkeley entourage showed up for his talk at the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalist with a Hamas flag . Thats the caliber of his supporters.

And yes, the loon with the Hamas flag is wearing a Nasrallah T-shirt.

Previous appearances of Atzmon in the Bay Area have been promoted by Paul Larudee of the International Solidarity Movement and other fringe groups. No local group has claimed sponsorship for Atzmon's Berkeley appearance this week.
iPhone Autocorrect Accused of Taking Sides in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (satire)
The rebooted autocorrect on iPhone 8 has been accused of making inflammatory remarks on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The first of many concerns was aired by Neil Rubinstein, who claimed “self-determination for the Jewish people” was corrected to “racism”. When he then asked Siri “what’s the difference between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism”, she responded that no results were found for anti-Semitism, anywhere in history.

Palestinian Ali Bin-Jamal was also quick to point out “Zionist sympathies”. He was still shaking when he recalled one incident: “At first I was confused why the West Bank kept correcting to the East Bank. Then, I was just talking about Al-Quds to my brother when it was corrected to “undivided and eternal capital of Israel.””
Israel ranked 19th most 'food secure' by UN global hunger report
The United Nations ranked Israel in the 19th spot in its 2017 report on how well countries can feed their populations.

The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report ranked more than 180 countries.

The report noted, however, that Israel's ability to feed its own people was largely dependent on imports of food, grains and the energy sources required to sustain large portion of its agricultural sector.

Without this dependence, primarily on imports from the United States, Israel would be ranked higher on the index.

The five most "food secure" countries, according to the report, are first-place Ireland, followed by the U.S., the United Kingdom, Singapore and Australia respectively. Rounding out the top 10 are the Netherlands in sixth place, followed by Germany, France, Canada and Sweden.
PreOccupiedTerritory: Non-Biking Tel Aviv Man Worried He Missed Point Of Yom Kippur (satire)
A resident of Israel’s commercial and financial hub who declined the opportunity to move about the city on two wheels yesterday fears he may have squandered his chance to experience was the Jewish Day of Atonement is all about, local sources are reporting.

Gal Teomim, 23, confessed to his flatmates this morning (Sunday) that because he had spent the day watching Netflix and using his Playstation instead of taking advantage of the weather and car-free streets, he will have to wait until next year to get into the spirit of the day.

“I’m a little bummed,” he was heard to admit. “I realize Yom Kippur has always involved making conscious change, and what more appropriate conscious change could there be than getting off my duff and using my bike? Even if I only rode it to the beach or something. Then at least I’d have something worthy of the day.”

Yom Kippur, the most solemn day on the Hebrew calendar, includes observances that have resulted in few, if any, motor vehicles on the roadways, a feature of the day unique to Israel that affords cyclists a once-yearly opportunity to travel along thoroughfares otherwise rendered perilous by cars, trucks, and motorcycles. In ancient times, the Day of Atonement was characterized by fasting and a special Temple service, but the modern interpretation of the day outside of irrelevant holdout communities beyond the boundaries of Tel Aviv involves types of recreation not possible in the presence of hazardous motor vehicles.
11 gorgeous pictures that capture the beauty of Sukkot
Green is the color of fall in Israel, green with a hint of yellow. It’s been that way for centuries, though not on account of the mild Mediterranean climate. The colors of fall in Israel are steeped in Jewish tradition and a commandment from the Torah that Jews commemorate the time our ancestors lived in the desert, in temporary shelters called sukkot, as they journeyed from Egypt to the Land of Israel.

This year, the weeklong festival of Sukkot (Tabernacles, in English) begins at sundown on Wednesday, October 4, with the rise of the full moon of the Jewish month of Tishrei.

The holiday comes at the height of the harvest season, when farmers in times past built sukkot in their fields in order to spend the night close to their crops and maximize the hours of reaping.

In a Facebook post, our friend Susan George references a Ha'aretz article by Yehuda Bauer, professor emeritus at the Avraham Harman Institute of Contemporary Jewry at Hebrew University, entitled, The Danger of Alienating Diaspora Jews.

As a non-Jewish supporter of both Israel and the Jewish people, George is curious about pro-Israel Jewish thoughts on the article.

I will toss in my two cents.

The first thing that I noticed, of course, is that the opinion piece is published in Ha'aretz which immediately sets off "alarm bells" for the simple reason that Ha'aretz is an anti-Israel newspaper.

Ha'aretz would not even support the Israeli baseball team - the Mensches on the Benches - because it had too many Americans.

They publish Gideon Levy and Amira Hass. Hass believes that Arabs have a moral right to throw stones at Jewish children, and both are despicable from anything that resembles a pro-Israel / pro-Jewish perspective.

Referring to American Jewry - and this is the article's primary thesis - Yehuda Bauer writes:
Without their support, the State of Israel would not have been established, and it cannot exist without such support today either.
Both claims are false.

The State of Israel was built by Jews and many Arabs who in the decades prior to 1948 created the infrastructure - physical, transportational, military, agricultural, industrial, and political - for the establishment of the country.

The role of American Jewry was significant, economic, but adjacent.

It was not central.

Israel most certainly can exist despite decreasing American Jewish friendship, although it would obviously be more difficult. Thankfully, Israel also has tremendous support among large swaths of self-identified American Christians who have far more political influence in the United States than does the American Jewish community.

Furthermore, American Jewry is not abandoning Israel.

According to a 2013 Pew Research Poll:
emotional attachment to Israel has not waned discernibly among American Jews in the past decade, though it is markedly stronger among Jews by religion (and older Jews in general) than among Jews of no religion (and younger Jews in general).
The enemies of Israel, and of the Jewish people, would like to divide and conquer, but this is not going to happen anytime soon.

Jewish Democratic Party Obama supporters are not abandoning Israel. Instead, they will kvetch. They will bitch and moan and whine and complain but at the end of the day, they will stick with their family.

{Bets, anyone?}

But the fact of the matter is that Israel has more economic, scholarly, scientific and diplomatic connections throughout the world today than it ever has in its history.

While the Jewish people in the Middle East remain under considerable threat by the much larger Arab-Muslim population surrounding it, it is also considerably stronger than at any previous point.

Bauer suggests that most American Jews care about internal Israeli religious squabbles.

He writes:
The Israeli government’s policy toward non-Orthodox streams of Jewry, which represent 90 percent of American Jews, threatens the connection that American Jews have to Israel, and is liable to weaken that link to such an extent that it results in apathy and a refusal to act on Israel’s behalf even during a crisis. Simply put, the policy of the current Israeli government is endangering Israel’s existence.
This is also false.

According to a January 24, 2017, article entitled, American and Israeli Jews: Twin Portraits From Pew Research Center Surveys, only fourteen percent of Israeli Jews and eighteen percent of U.S. Jews consider "social, religious, or political problems" to be central.

Most American Jews have very little interest in the arcane doings of Israel's religious policies toward "non-Orthodox streams of Jewry."

Most of us simply do not care.

Although we generally support Israel we honestly tend not to fret over Israel's Jew v. Jew religious disputations. Speaking strictly for myself, I find them vaguely annoying, but little beyond that and I am someone who follows Israel on a daily basis. As a lightly religious Jew I do not much care and my bet is that my lightly religious fellow American Jews do not much care, either.

Thus what I conclude from Professor Bauer's article is that it represents a growing tendency for western political divisiveness, more generally.

The American spirit of emotive chaos that came into place in the months prior to Donald Trump's fantastical defeat of Hillary Clinton is causing far greater ruptures in American society than anyone expected.

In the United States, people are at one another's throats.

Families are rendered.

Friendships are broken.

And there is violence in the streets from Charlottesville to Berkeley.

But the truth is that most American Jews remain supportive of Israel and most do not worry about Jewish interreligious squabbles within that country.

You can be reasonably sure that going forward - despite Jewish pearl clutching - American Jewry will, at least within our lifetimes, continue to strongly support Israel.

The Salah-al-Din Brigades of the Popular Resistance Committees held a "celebration" of the 17th anniversary of the beginning of the Second Intifada. (So did many other groups.)

Here are some photos of this celebration of terror that includes kids:

People are freaking out over far right movements marching in the US and Europe and pretend to be aghast at the antisemitic statements that they make. But many of these same people seem to be oddly tolerant over the antisemitic groups that openly march with weapons in Gaza and the West Bank.

Nor that many of these groups are involved in negotiations to become part of the PA government without any expectation of them changing their positions.

From Middle East Eye:
Sara Sleiman was felled by the bullet as she left the restaurant. Her killer didn’t intend to shoot her.

He was angry at a traffic jam in Zahlé, central Lebanon - and started firing into the air. One bullet ricocheted off the pavement and hit the 24-year-old school teacher in the head.

It is not uncommon in Lebanon to see someone shoot their firearms into the air to express emotion, be they AK47s, hunting rifles or Magnums. Sometimes it’s at a wedding, political event or the announcement of school exam results. Or people do it to express emotions, such as anger, as in the case of Sleiman's killer.

According to Permanent Peace Movement, a Lebanese NGO focused on conflict resolution, Sleiman is one of 90 people to die from stray bullets so far in 2017.

On Monday, Prime Minister Saad Hariri and civil groups launched a campaign against what has become a deadly tradition.
Here is part of the story that you won't read in Western media, because it uses stereotypes of Arab men that are true - and not complimentary.

Zeina Chamoun is a journalist and founder of the Don’t Forget Us (Ma Tensouna) movement, through which bereaved families campaign for action against celebratory gunfire. He tells Middle East Eye: “It is a cultural habit. For Lebanese men, firing a gun is a demonstration of power.”

Hariri said on Monday: “The real man is the one who respects the law and the lives of people. Men are the soldiers who know when to use their guns and when to shoot. Those who shoot randomly are not men.

“They think they are asserting their manhood by shooting indiscriminately, but in fact this indicates that they have a lack of manhood."
Manliness is an important component of Arab culture - one that Hariri is directly addressing here. Not by saying that such a culture is dangerous or misogynist - but by embracing it and simply saying that those men who want to violently assert their manhood are doing it the wrong way.

Of course, manliness is a component of honor.
The practice is not limited to one group in Lebanon’s fractured society. Nor is Lebanon unique - firing guns into the air also happens in Yemen, Jordan, Palestine, Iraq and Syria, among other countries in the region.

But the shooters rarely consider what happens to their gunfire. This summer, a father accidentally killed his own son while shooting to celebrate Baccalaureate results. An 88-year-old man also died from a stray bullet during the same celebrations.
