From Ian:

Caroline Glick: Israel’s risk aversion problem
This delusional thinking is what caused the IDF’s General Staff to convene immediately after Operation Protective Edge ended and try to figure out how to rebuild Gaza.
Ever since the cease-fire came into force, Hamas has diverted all the assistance it has received from Israel and the international community not to rebuild Gaza, but to rebuild its military capacity to harm Israel. And yet, from the IDF’s perspective, ever since the war ended our most urgent task has been to save Hamas and the Palestinians alike from reckoning with the price of their aggression.
Likewise, Israel continues to insist that we have a strategic interest in peace with the PLO. Even if this is true in theory, chances are greater that unicorns will fall from the sky and prance through Jerusalem’s Old City than that the PLO will agree to make peace with Israel.
Our continued defense of the PLO as a legitimate actor harms our ability to secure other strategic interests that are achievable and can improve Israel’s regional position. These interests include securing transportation arteries in Judea and Samaria and strengthening Israel's military and political control over the areas. These interests have only grown more acute in recent years with the rise of jihadist forces throughout the region and among the Palestinians themselves.
This brings us back to McCain and his strategic wisdom.
Israel must not allow the risks of action to lure us into strategic paralysis that imperils our future.
The more Israel allows other actors to determine the nature of the emerging regional order, the less secure Israel will be. The more willing we are to take calculated risks today the greater our ability will be to influence the future architecture of regional power relations and so minimize threats to our survival in the decades to come.
Sarah Honig: That level of hatefulness
In all, during her inglorious State Department stint, Hillary functioned as an authentic representative of her boss, President Obama.
And now as a presidential candidate herself, she pretends to be far friendlier to Israel than she was. She is understandably after money and votes. Electioneering begets lots of affable blarney but the devil is in the details. As only expected, Hillary never mentions her chumminess with Suha Arafat and her failure to take Mrs. Arafat to task for odious propaganda that (in the words of Hillary’s own censure of trump) “not only was it out of bounds, it was untrue.”
There are no extenuating excuses for the fact that Hillary kept mum during her Gaza visit and especially afterwards. She didn’t object to outright lies about non-existent contaminants with which Suha insisted Israel literally polluted actual Palestinian wells.
Not to so much as intimate a suggestion of criticism lent a measure of legitimacy to Suha’s outlandish and ultra-false charges. It also subliminally lent the impression that somehow Israel is the figurative poison in the Mideastern well – an impression later wellhoned by Obama whose bias-laden diplomacy Hillary Clinton unflinchingly furthered and helped implement.
Clearly, owning up to even a faint trace of such skewed statecraft now would be politically super-stupid for her with elections in the offing. Besides, Hillary was anyhow never a remarkable stickler for the truth. That, though, doesn’t mean that we should forget her double standards.
Paraphrasing Hillary’s own sanctimonious admonition, she “should have from the beginning corrected that kind of rhetoric, that level of hatefulness.”

Amnesty International Defends Palestinian Who Uses His Children to Provoke Israeli Soldiers
In this context, it is also important to understand that the goal Bassem Tamimi pursues is not the peaceful co-existence of the Jewish state of Israel and an Arab-Muslim Palestinian state. In various interviews published on sites that oppose Israel’s existence as a Jewish state – such as the “hate site” Mondoweiss and The Electronic Intifada (from where an interview conducted by the notorious Max Blumenthal was even cross-posted on the website of the Al-Qassam Brigades), Bassem Tamimi has indicated that he is a determined proponent of the so-called “one-state-solution” that would replace the world’s only Jewish state with yet another Arab-Muslim majority state.
While Bassem Tamimi’s frequently stated views illustrate how preposterous it is for Amnesty International and other groups to promote him as a “human rights activist” worthy of everyone’s support and admiration, I have documented in considerable detail that the publicly accessible Facebook activity of Bassem Tamimi and his family – who are important participants in and supporters of his activism – provide plenty of additional evidence that the Tamimis are quite open about their disdain for non-violence. There are “Likes” for pages and posts promoting Hamas and the jihadist Al-Qassam Brigades; several notorious terrorists who together killed more than 50 Israeli civilians – including many children – and wounded hundreds more are celebrated as admirable “rebels;” and perhaps most disturbingly, there is relentless pressure put on the Tamimi children to provoke the IDF in order to achieve either “victory or martyrdom.”
It seems that as long as you send out your own and other people’s children to “shatter the myth of the Zionist army,” lip service to human rights and the ability to manipulate the media are all it takes to get Amnesty’s unwavering support. And if Bassem Tamimi succeeds in his quest to start a third intifada by urging his own children and other youngsters to provoke clashes with the IDF, Amnesty will no doubt repeat its accusations that Israeli security forces are showing “a callous disregard for human life.”
‘Jewish Voice for Peace’ defends anti-Israel Third Grade event
Rather than becoming introspective and questioning themselves as to why they feel the need to manipulate third graders, Jewish Voice for Peace is going on the offensive, claiming that the school’s actions and my reporting have silenced pro-Palestinian voices.
This appears to be part of JVP’s national campaign, launched yesterday in conjunction with Palestine Legal, to claim that pro-Israel groups have “stifled” their free speech.
On its national website, JVP and other anti-Israel groups that sponsored Tamimi’s national tour, issued a press release, objecting to the “Undeserved Backlash” against Tamimi’s third grade appearance. It reads, in part:
"On Friday, September 18, 2015, internationally renowned Palestinian nonviolent human rights activist, Bassem Tamimi, was an honored guest speaker as part of the human rights curriculum in the third grade classroom of Beverly J. Martin (BJM) Elementary school. Unfortunately, the school has received undeserved backlash from community members who objected to Mr. Tamimi’s human rights activism."
Ryan Bellerose: A Letter To Palestinian Supporters Tempted To Co-Opt Native American Struggles
Dear Pallywood asshats,
I think perhaps you people do not understand the depth of my disdain for those who piggyback off my peoples’ sorrows and misfortunes in order to gain credibility.
I am angry because I am more than a little fed up with people like Steven Salaita who write articles and “books” comparing Arabs to Indians in order to demonize Jews. I am even more tired that nobody seems to want to stand up to this guy or his friends. They don’t think its that big a deal. Maybe because he is just lying to Indians, and everyone knows, that’s not exactly new. I have been speaking up against him for a couple years now and what also annoys me are the dumbass Indians who actually think that clown is right and don’t even look at the actual history before speaking up. I can understand why he does what he does – his own struggle has no truth and needs the truth of my peoples to gain credibility, but why are some of our own are helping? I cannot understand.
First off, the Arabs are nothing like us. They are descended from colonizers and imperialists who conquered the entire Middle East, much of Africa and Europe and were not gentle with indigenous people. They force converted people, stole language and culture and basically were every bit as bad if not worse than white people in North America. So don’t ever compare my people to them and expect some of us not to speak up. Just because you read some piece of c**p book by Edward Said or Steven Salaita that is more fiction than truth, doesn’t make you an expert. In fact you will probably say something stupid if that’s what you base your opinions on. They are the very definition of Imperialists; just because they aren’t pale skinned doesn’t make them any better.
Is This the Beginning of the End for AIPAC?
And why would they? Crossing AIPAC, after all, is not the same as crossing Israel—something that American lawmakers, given voters’ overwhelming sympathy and support for the Jewish state, actually do fear. It’s not even clear that AIPAC still has a clear mandate from Jerusalem: The organization was reportedly opposed to Netanyahu’s speech in Congress earlier this year and saw the Israeli prime minister’s decision to accept John Boehner’s invitation as something between an irritation and an assault. Some at AIPAC even used the metaphor of a surprise attack in describing how ill-prepared the group was for Bibi’s move: “This is AIPAC’s Yom Kippur War,” one of the organization’s leaders told the Israeli journalist Ben Kaspit at the time.
With the GOP now talking directly to Netanyahu, and the Democrats standing firmly with the president, it’s hard to see AIPAC bouncing back unless the organization shows it has to be taken seriously. The lobby’s only hope is to use its considerable war chest to forcefully go after Democrats in 2016, restoring some of its capacity for political deterrence and regaining the Democrats’ obedience and the Republicans’ respect.
The Iran deal wasn’t just a battle over a specific policy; it might also have been a bellwether for a new political order, one in which traditional alignments fade away. Ever the master of the zero-sum game, President Barack Obama—whose chief talking point about the Iran deal was that you’d have to be some kind of nutty warmonger to oppose such a sensible scheme—managed to intimidate ostensibly pro-Israel Democrats on the most important vote related to Israel’s security in decades. What does it mean to support AIPAC—as leading Democrats, such as Debbie Wasserman Schultz, claim to do—but simultaneously vote for measures that cede regional power and influence to Israel’s (and America’s) worst enemies? This is not a political question, at least not entirely. It’s a moral conundrum, one that leaves many supporters of Israel, inside and outside the District of Columbia, in despair. Unable to be Democrats any longer, and frequently unwilling to turn Republican, these ideologically homeless voters are looking for a strong organization to represent them. To seize that mantle, AIPAC, or whoever replaces it, must do away with any notion of politesse and fight not only for votes but also, and most importantly, for beliefs.
Senate Democrats move to tighten up terms of Iran deal
Those correctives were evidenced in the legislation introduced Thursday by Senators Ben Cardin, Michael Bennet, Richard Blumenthal, Ron Wyden, Chris Coons, Chuck Schumer, Mark Warner, Cory Booker and Brian Schatz. Although the bill did not have Republican sponsorship, its sponsors argued that it “builds upon the bipartisan commitment to oversight outlined in the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015 that passed the U.S. Senate 98 to 1.”
The legislation’s aim, according to its sponsors, is to “strengthen US policy toward Iran and to clarify aspects of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action” — the nuclear deal — “that is set to take effect.” It includes a regional security strategy for the Middle East and authorizes additional security assistance for Israel.
“The JCPOA will be implemented and we must now focus on how best to make this agreement succeed by strengthening US policy toward Iran and bolstering our strategic plan for a very volatile Middle East region,” said Cardin, who announced shortly before the September filibuster that he opposed the nuclear agreement. Cardin took the lead in working to draft the bill following the White House’s successful campaign. “We as Democratic opponents and supporters of the Iran agreement are taking the first step forward to chart a new course that borrows from past practice.”
Bennet, who supported the administration’s position on the deal, said that the legislation “will strengthen implementation of the nuclear agreement and reiterate our support for Israel.” The bill, he said, “reiterates that all options, including the use of force, remain available to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.”
The legislation also seeks to counter Iran’s state sponsorship of terrorism by emphasizing increased cooperation with international partners.
Bahrain Withdraws Ambassador from Iran After Bomb-Factory Find
Bahrain said on Thursday it had recalled its ambassador to Iran, a day after it said security forces had discovered a large bomb-making factory and arrested a number of suspects linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it had also declared the Iranian charge d’affaires in Bahrain a “persona non grata” and gave him 72 hours to leave the country.
In a statement on its website, the ministry said the decision to recall its ambassador had come “in light of continued Iranian meddling in the affairs of the kingdom of Bahrain … in order to create sectarian strife and to impose hegemony and control”.
The Gulf Arab kingdom has been cracking down on militants behind recent bomb attacks on security forces that killed several people this year.
Iran denies involvement in any violence in Bahrain.
In March, Bahrain’s public prosecutor said it seized bomb-making equipment being smuggled from Iraq aboard a passenger bus for use in attacks in Bahrain.
Yemen reportedly cuts diplomatic ties with Iran
The Yemeni government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi has decided to sever diplomatic relations with Iran, Reuters quoted a report on state-owned Aden television as saying Friday.
Hadi’s internationally recognized government is supported by Saudi Arabia, and a Saudi-led Arab coalition intervened in a war between forces loyal to Hadi and Houthi rebels, Shiites backed by Iran, in March.
Bahrain also recalled its ambassador from Iran on Thursday.
On Wednesday, forces of the Saudi-led coalition stopped an Iranian boat carrying weapons allegedly destined for the Houthis as it made its way to Yemen.
Obama’s Nightmarish Syrian Legacy
It’s hard to know whether to laugh or cry at the level of naiveté in Washington, where responsible office-holders honestly seem to imagine that the Russian dictator can be trusted to keep a solemn international commitment. If anyone had bothered to consult with the Georgians or Ukrainians, they would have rapidly disabused our leaders of this farcical notion.
The good news is that “deconfliction” between U.S. and Russian air strikes may not turn to be so important, because the Russians are going to be dropping bombs in a different part of the country from the Americans. Our aircraft are bombing ISIS. Their aircraft are bombing more moderate fighters who are in many ways the more significant threat to Russia’s ally, Bashar Assad. Oh and Turkish aircraft are bombing the positions of Kurdish militias that are the only effective anti-ISIS fighters on the ground in Syria.
What a perfect division of labor. Its effect will be just what the Russians and Iranians, who are Assad’s biggest backers, intend: to keep the dictator in power in at least a small part of Syria. That will leave Assad free to carry out his reign of terror, which is responsible for most of the deaths in Syria and most of the refugees fleeing the country.
Now even if President Obama wanted to take more serious steps to stop Assad — and there is no sign that he does — he would find it increasingly difficult to do so. As General Philip Breedlove, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander, recently noted, Russia is building an “A2/AD bubble” over Syria. That stands for anti-access/area denial — military nomenclature for defensive systems such as anti-aircraft missiles that will make it hard for U.S. or Israeli forces to operate in the area.
So, in addition to the creation of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, the ongoing killing of the Syrian civil war, the general chaos of Libya, the loss of territory to the Taliban, and the general expansion of Iranian influence, the Obama administration is leaving another legacy to its successor: Growing Russian power in the heart of the Middle East. It makes you wonder why anyone would want to be president, given the size of the mess that Obama’s successor will inherit.
What Putin's Syrian strategy means for Israel

It's likely that as a result, and as a result of the agreement between Putin and Netanyahu, Israel will try to avoid future airstrikes against Assad's weapon convoys to Hezbollah. After all, Russia is the one giving Assad those weapons, and it has a clear interest in drawing Israel, a local power, to its side, distancing it from the Americans.
Russia sees as a partner even though Putin quickly condemned Israel's airstrikes in Syria. That condemnation was meant to send the message: You Israelis are partners, but there are rules to this game, and you'll have to respect them.
It's likely that as a result, and as a result of the agreement between Putin and Netanyahu, Israel will try to avoid future airstrikes against Assad's weapon convoys to Hezbollah. One can also expect Russia to avoid permitting the transfer of Assad's weapons to Hezbollah. After all, Russia is the one giving Assad those weapons, and it has a clear interest in pulling Israel, a local power, to its side, distancing it from the Americans.
The bottom line is that Russia will probably serve as a stabilizing force in Syria, but what's less appealing is that it will legitimize an Iranian entrance into the country, under its supervision. As I said, it's unknown what will come out of the complex regional stew Russia is cooking. Putin doesn't know if his gamble will pay off, either. But as of now Israel needn't be too worried about Russia's increased presence in the region.
Russian airstrikes reportedly target CIA-backed rebels, civilians in Syria
More Iranian troops have arrived in Syria for an upcoming ground operation to accompany Russian airstrikes, defense officials confirm to Fox News.
“It has always been understood in this building that the Russians would provide the air force, and the Iranians would provide the ground force in Syria,” one official said.
Army Col. Steve Warren told reporters, “We know the Iranians are a part of this. We've known that since day one.”
The officials speaking to Fox News could not disclose the size of this new Iranian force due to the sensitivity of the information.
These Iranian forces are under the command of Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani, the Quds Force commander in charge of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s international operations, which runs a network of proxy forces throughout the Middle East, including Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Lebanon.
Pentagon Won't Clarify Whether U.S.-Backed Syrian Rebels Will Be Protected Against Russia
The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) refuses to explicitly say whether or not American military troops are planning to assist and protect U.S.-armed and trained Syrian rebels who come under attack by Russia.
Pentagon reporters grilled DOD press secretary Peter Cook about the issue during a briefing on Thursday, asking him numerous times if the U.S. military was committed to protecting American-backed Syrian rebels against Russia and respond if they were to come under attack by Moscow’s military.
U.S. officials, including Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, have said that Russian airstrikes have hit American-backed Syrian rebels.
Yet Cook, at numerous times, dismissed Russia attacking Syrian rebels considered allies of the United States as speculative.
“You’re talking about a hypothetical situation, in which case specific opposition forces would be targeted, and we don’t have that situation right in front of us right now,” he said.
Decade on, Danish Mohammed cartoonist has no regrets
Ten years after a Danish newspaper triggered deadly protests by publishing 12 cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed, the man behind the most infamous drawing says he feels anger but no regret.
Kurt Westergaard, 80, has received numerous death threats and lives under police protection since his caricature of a swarthy man with a bomb swaddled in his turban was published by daily Jyllands-Posten on September 30, 2005.
In 2010 an axe and knife-wielding man broke into his home, forcing him to take refuge in a panic room for 10 minutes as his attacker pounded on the door, while his five-year-old granddaughter was left alone in the living room.
“My basic feeling has been and still is anger. If you are threatened I think anger is a good feeling because it is like you mentally strike back,” he told AFP in a telephone interview.
Douglas Murray: Denmark’s free speech conference kept the spirit of Charlie Hebdo alive
This has been a terrible year for free speech. In January, after the atrocities in Paris, the whole world was ‘Charlie’, for about an hour. Then the violence and intimidation did the job they usually do (though we like to pretend otherwise) and by July even Charlie wasn’t Charlie anymore.
So I was delighted earlier this year when the Free Press Society of Denmark asked me if I would be willing to come to Copenhagen this September to take part in a conference to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the original ‘cartoon crisis’. I have spoken for this excellent group of doughty Danes before, and they have certainly shown more courage than the rest of the European media class combined. Not that they don’t pay a price for their bravery. The person who introduced me the last time I spoke for the organisation was the historian and journalist Lars Hedegaard. A while later a Muslim assassin arrived at his front door and tried to fire two shots at his head. Lars – who despite being in his 70s is as tough as anything – thankfully survived the attack.
Another founder member, who now heads the Lars Vilks Committee, is Helle Brix. It was her committee who organised the meeting on free speech in February this year that was shot up by an Islamist gunman (I interviewed her for The Spectator after that attack). In the meantime, there have been countless efforts to attack Jyllands-Posten, the newspaper which carried the original cartoons, and its editor, Flemming Rose, who commissioned the depictions.

Mark Steyn in Denmark, on the "Mohammed Cartoons" 10th anniversary
In some ways, it was a somber gathering, as many of those who should have been in attendance -- cartoonists from Charlie Hebdo and other publications -- had either been murdered by Muslim terrorists or gone into hiding.
As Steyn notes in his talk, the British Foreign Office issued an advisory, warning travelers against attending the event.
Even the newspaper that first published the cartoons declined to participate.
In his stirring speech, Steyn hailed "Rebel Commander" Ezra Levant for being one of the few publishers brave enough to run the cartoons, in his magazine The Western Standard.

The Middle East Studies Blind Spot: Anti-Semitism
Anti-Semitism, the hatred of the Jews as Jews, has a history in the Arab states and in Iran. It is blatant and obvious in the declarations of the government of Iran and in the public statements of Islamist organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah. The link between Islamism and anti-Semitism has been a continuing theme of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt since the canonical writings of Hassan al-Banna, Haj Amin al-Husseini, and Sayyid Qutb from the 1930s to 1950s. The evidence of its presence is extensive in the files of the American and British diplomatic archives. It was a theme in the liberal and left-leaning journalism of the World War II era and in the scholarship of the postwar decades.
Yet the discipline of Middle East Studies today, rather than building on this valuable scholarly legacy, shows too little interest in the topic. Or it finds anti-Semitism's origins in the existence and policies of Zionism and the state of Israel while neglecting the presence of such antagonism in the years before Israel's founding. In so doing, the current disinterest evinces the entry into the academy of aftereffects of the leftist ideological offensive against Israel and Zionism that achieved so much success at the United Nations from the 1960s to the 1980s and that culminated in the UN's "Zionism is racism" resolution of November 1975. In the last decades of the Cold War, the Arab states, the Palestine Liberation Organization, and the Soviet bloc placed the entire blame for the Israel-Arab-Palestinian conflict on Israel. As I am documenting in At War with Israel: East Germany and the West German Radical Left, 1967-1989, forthcoming with Cambridge University Press in spring 2016, these countries and organizations equated Israel with Nazi Germany and succeeded in preventing any public examination of the policy of expulsion and ethnic cleansing of the great majority of Jewish citizens of Israel that would have resulted from an implementation of the PLO's Charter of 1968. The flow of such ideas into the academy has created a regrettable blockage of research into the issue of anti-Semitism in an Arabic, Islamist and also Iranian context.
'Bon Jovi stands with Israeli settlers who burn Palestinian babies,' Roger Waters says
Pink Floyd co-founder and bassist Roger Waters continued his long-standing tradition of publicly calling out a big-name pop star for agreeing to perform in Israel.
In a letter written by the legendary British rocker and obtained by the online magazine Salon, Waters wrote that Jon Bon Jovi, who is bringing his act to Tel Aviv for a much-anticipated concert scheduled for this Saturday night, "stands shoulder to shoulder with the settler who burned the [Palestinian] baby" in the West Bank village of Duma last month.
"Often in the past I have written detailed, and sometimes even persuasive, letters to colleagues in the music business, encouraging them not to give succor to the Israeli government’s apartheid policies by performing in Israel," the creative brains behind such seminal works of music as The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon wrote. "Having read Jon’s comments last week...I won’t waste my time drawing parallels with Apartheid South Africa and the moral stand that so many artists took then and that thousands are taking now in the face of decades of Israeli oppression of Palestinians."
Bon Jovi joins a lengthy list of high-profile names whom Waters has publicly scolded due to their associations with Israel or Israeli-linked activities. Waters has criticized actress Scarlett Johannson for her endorsement of SodaStream and he has also urged other musicians like Neil Young, Robbie Williams, and the Rolling Stones to cancel gigs in Israel.
IsraellyCool: Roger Waters Disgraces Himself With Attack On Bon Jovi
With Bon Jovi touching down in Israel for tomorrow night’s highly anticipated concert, after lead singer Jon said Roger Waters’ BDS campaign “does not interest him” – Waters has gone on the offensive. While being offensive.
..Waters has published this rant the very same day this was happening:
6 young children burying their parents, who were deliberately murdered by palestinian terrorists last night.
Of course, to Waters, this was probably either justified or at least understandable.
I would like to think Bon Jovi stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Israelis who just want to enjoy their music, while trying to put behind last night’s deplorable murder and, in fact, decades of unrelenting terrorism.
On the other hand, Roger Waters stands shoulder-to-shoulder with terrorists and murderers.
Quick Pushback Is Needed as BDS Efforts Grow
The partial retraction of the almost wholly symbolic boycott gesture by an entity with no real economic or political relationships with Israel indicates that BDS initiatives are often both propaganda warfare against Israel and manifestations of “virtue signaling.” In the latter, endorsing BDS is a means to demonstrate “decency” and “virtue” (and thus ideological solidarity, almost exclusively with the left) by expressing antipathy towards designated unpopular causes. In these and other cases, however, quick exposure and responses may be effective in pushing back BDS.
Other BDS developments in September were less symbolic. Reports now indicate that European Union (E.U.) labeling of products that originate in Israeli communities across the “Green Line” will commence in October. The move came after the recent endorsement of labeling by the European Parliament and by the French Economic Minister. A European official also warned that “we will continue with moves against settlement expansion, and the marking of products will just be the beginning.” The labels and remarks reflect the E.U.’s relentless focus on “settlements” as the exclusive means to resolve the Arab-Israel conflict.
Israeli officials have reacted angrily to the impending labels. The issue was raised in a strategic dialogue with E.U. officials that accompanied the visit of European Council President Donald Tusk to Israel. Israeli officials complained that the labeling was actually a means to force a diplomatic solution. Israeli officials also noted that the labels were unfair, since among other things they were not applied to other “occupied territories” such as Northern Cyprus, and that they constituted a slippery slope towards a full boycott of Israel.
In a sign that the labeling issue is being taken seriously at the highest levels, Israeli Prime Minister warned before his official visit to Great Britain that the E.U. risked losing Israeli high tech business to Indian and Chinese investors. This assertiveness was echoed by Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely, who warned that European labeling “settlement” products was a “red line” for Israel. It was unclear, however, precisely what measures Israel would take besides diplomatic initiatives.
French cancer group said behind ‘Palestine’ map
The Simon Wiesenthal Center on Thursday urged a withdrawal of support for the French League Against Cancer and its patrons, saying the organization had produced a map which labeled Israel as “Palestine” and which was subsequently distributed to elementary schools in Paris.
In a letter to Paris Mayor, Anne Hidalgo, the center urged her to “take steps to recall these scurrilous ‘diaries’, identify and dismiss the antisemite responsible for this geographical revisionism and publicly condemn this travesty.” It also registered a complaint with the World Health Organization.
Responding last week to parents who complained about the distribution of the map at public schools, the City of Paris said it was the result of “a simple production error.”
The map, which ends north of central Israel the West Bank, designates the territory of Israel included in it as “Palestine,” alongside Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Turkey. In addition to omitting Israel’s name, it contains no mention of Saudi Arabia and Jordan, though it contains parts of those countries.
Financial Times erases the Temple Mount from Jerusalem
In addition to the omission in the text, graphics and photos used by FT editors also erase the existence of Judaism’s holiest site.
The only passage which even alludes to Jewish history in Jerusalem is in a paragraph which notes that “archaeologists digging in and around the Old City…often find..signs of an ancient Jewish presence…including ruins from the Temple period.”
However, even that passage is “balanced” by citing Palestinian claims that such Israeli archeology is used as a “political tool”.
Of course, denying the Jewish connection to Jerusalem is par for the course for the Palestinians. However, professional journalists who omit such an important component of the Jews’ connection to the holy city are not commiting a serious distortion of history, but are arguably engaging in a breach of the accuracy clause of the Editors’ Code.
Criminal complaint filed against German Mayor for anti-Israel and anti-Jewish hate
A German Jew filed a criminal complaint against the mayor of Jena, Albrecht Schröter, alleging he incited hatred toward Israelis because of his call to boycott products from the Jewish state and blaming Israel for the Syrian refugee crisis in Europe.
The Thüringische Landeszeitung newspaper reported on Tuesday that Andreas Neumann filed the criminal complaint against Schröter with the public prosecutor’s office in Gera.
According to a fax sent to the Mayor’s office, Neumann seeks a 15,000 Euro penalty, as well as a temporary restraining order against the Mayor’s allegedly anti-Jewish rhetoric.
Neumann said “Schröter’s call has a clear anti-Semitic character and is, in my view, clearly incitement to hate.”
Israeli, American and Palestinian Launch ‘Peace’ Game App
Bandura Games, a computer gaming company based in San Francisco, California, is set to launch a new mobile game app that will build connections and create empathy among people from different sides of conflict zones.
Justin Hefter, Bandura Games’ CEO, traveled to Israel in the summer of 2014 to see if he could find a way to use games to bring Israeli and Palestinian youth together.
In an interview with Tazpit News Agency, Hefter explained what set him on this path. “I graduated from Stanford University with a degree in public policy in 2011. One of the things I did as an undergrad was work with Jewish and Muslim students on campus to come up with events to bring people together.”
“I always wanted to take those experiences that brought people together and scale them up. So in 2014 I left my job and traveled to Israel to see if there was a way I could use online video games to bring Israelis and Palestinians together,” he said.
In one stroke, Spain granting citizenship to 4,300 Sephardic Jews
Spain on Friday granted citizenship to 4,302 people whose Jewish ancestors fled after being told in 1492 to convert to Catholicism or go into exile ahead of the Spanish Inquisition that saw many Jews burned at the stake.
The naturalizations were approved a day after Spain adopted its new citizenship law for descendants of Sephardic Jews, said Justice Minister Rafael Catala.
It allows applicants to maintain their original citizenship so they can have dual nationality.
Those granted citizenship Friday applied under an older law requiring them to relinquish home country nationality but can now have dual nationality.
The new decree “has allowed us at one stroke to grant nationality to 4,302 people of Sephardic origin” whose applications under previous legislation were already pending, Catala told a news conference after a cabinet meeting.
Teridion gets $20 million investment on promise of 20X faster Internet
Israeli fast Internet provider Teridion, which claims it can deliver Internet content twenty times faster than current solutions, emerged from stealth mode on Wednesday, and announced that it had just closed a $15 million second round of investment, bringing the company’s total fundraising to $20 million. For the past two years, Teridion has been providing fast Internet services to fifteen companies around the world – providing data with the best routes on congested web data highways to ensure the fastest possible data delivery time.
“The Internet is an incredibly powerful tool, but until now, we have struggled to take full advantage of its capabilities. It’s still common for us to fall victim to slow response times and volatile connections,” said Elad Rave, founder and CEO of Teridion. “We are breaking down these boundaries and providing users with a seamless Internet experience – no matter their location, device or application. It’s our goal to bring customer loyalty to the forefront, and the funding and general availability of our product are major steps in this direction.”
The latest investment round was led by JVP, Magma and Singtel Innov8. With the new funds – and now that Teridion has “gone public” with its technology – the company said it would “accelerate its go-to-market strategy and grow its team both in the US and internationally.”
Philips CEO: Israel has major role in our vision
Frans van Houten tells "Globes" that Philip's focus on technology for medicine means Israel will become one of its main centers.
Royal Philips will spin off a substantial part of its business in 2016. The giant concern, with annual revenue of €21 billion and a €23 billion market cap, plans to offer shares in its lighting division, which accounts for a quarter of its business. This measure is another step in the change the company has been undergoing in recent years from dealing in industrial and household electronic products (such as TVs and electric razors) to a company with a special focus on health.
Philips's products are designed to create a continuity of treatments from the hospital (where the company operates imaging systems, medical devices, and large systems for managing all of a hospital's information) to the patient's home (where the company offers home medical devices, but also consumer health products, such as a toothbrush that measures the health of a person's mouth and a refrigerator that monitors food consumption). Through this change and integration, Philips hopes to dominate the growing and flourishing digital health sector. (h/t Cliff)
The intrepid couple who restored a gem of a Polish synagogue
It’s been almost one year since Israeli president Reuven Rivlin delivered a stirring speech at the opening ceremonies of Warsaw’s glistening new POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews.
“It is not a museum of the Holocaust, it is a museum of life,” Rivlin proclaimed, echoing the mission of the museum that tells the 1,000-year history of how Jews lived in Poland, and not only how they died.
Since then, more than 350,000 people from around the world, including thousands of Israelis, have visited the museum and the widely hailed centerpiece of its permanent exhibit — the recreated roof and painted ceiling of the 18th century Gwozdziec Synagogue and its intricately painted, hand-carved eight-sided bimah.
Now, a new documentary, “Raise the Roof,” takes viewers behind the scenes with the unlikely and inspiring story of how Rick and Laura Brown, a husband-wife team of artists and visionary educators from Boston, led an international movement of more than 300 students, artisans and scholars to recreate this magnificent architectural gem, a little known but significant piece of nearly lost Jewish history.
At one time, there were some 200 of these wooden synagogues built during a period referred to as the golden age of Polish Jewry. None survived destruction during the German Nazi occupation of Poland.
Thousands attend Jerusalem March amid security tensions
Waving colorful flags, thousands of foreigners and Israelis took to the streets of Jerusalem on Thursday to participate in the 60th annual Jerusalem flag march and celebrate the Jewish holiday of Sukkot.
Ahead of the event police tightened security and blocked many Jerusalem streets to allow the march to pass through, causing traffic jams in other parts of the city.
Many Christian supporters of Israel, who joined the Israelis in celebrating the holiday and Jerusalem March, walked down the heavily guarded streets.
"Actually we would like to pray for Israel and tell the people here that we love them. And God bless this city Jerusalem, always all the time, [and] forever," said Suka, from China.
"We are here to show support on behalf of the United States' delegates to show our support for Israel and the Israeli army and to say that we stand with Israel and the guard of Israel," said Joyelizabeth from the U.S.
A Succot scorecard
At home, Israel’s dramatic drive to succeed ever-more in all aspects of life continues unabated, with spectacular results, from leading brain scientists to rocket missile defense systems; first-class doctors and world-class healthcare; high levels of Torah study – only 70 years after the destruction of European Jewry’s Torah world; multiple humanitarian missions undertaken abroad; and most of all, sensational activism and high motivation of our magnificent youth. And we are returning to our roots and healing our divisions.
Thus, a cold evaluation of Israel’s strengths versus our enemies’ threats leads to the conclusion that Israel is winning on all battlefronts; overcoming every challenge; and advancing in all ways. Life in Israel is full of meaning – adorned by sacrifice, commitment, achievement and joy – all the components that make life satisfying and exciting, and uniquely so for Jews who have long awaited a national return to Zion.
Listen to the words of the late, great ambassador Dr. Yaakov Herzog, speaking in 1971 about “The Permanence of Israel”: “We face perils. No man can guarantee that fighting will not resume tomorrow, that our soldiers will not have to fight again bloody battles. But we know we have the strength to withstand them. The balance of arms is in our favor at the moment... We may face political isolation and pressures, but we face all this in the knowledge that we belong to a new epoch and that the Jew has changed – in Jerusalem, in Israel and across the world.
“And though at times it looks dark, the light will reappear. With firmness touched with generosity, with strength uplifted by spiritual understanding, we can move ahead. With all the difficulties, with all the pressures, we are the generation of redemption. Let us indeed be worthy of this privilege that defies human logic and supersedes human vistas.”

Hundreds of commenters at that Facebook site happily cheered the murders of the Henkins.

With not one person I could find disagreeing.

From Ian:

Eugene Kontorovich: Grandnephew of ‘father of human rights law’ killed for being Jewish
Eitam and Naama Henkin, two Israeli civilians, were gunned down in a drive-by shooting on a road in the West Bank yesterday. Four of their children were in the backseat of their car at the time.
The name Henkin will be immediately familiar to those interested in international law, because of Louis Henkin. Prof. Henkin was one of the defining figures in post-World War II international law. In a five-decade career at Columbia University School of Law, he pioneered the modern field of international law and has been called “the father of human rights law.”
Eitam’s grandfather was Louis Henkin’s brother; his parents are prominent Orthodox figures, associated with liberal approaches to Judaism. Eitam himself was a graduate fellow at the Kohelet Policy Forum, a Jerusalem think tank I am also associated with. My colleagues there describe Eitam as “an extremely impressive scholar and human being.” The Fatah movement of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has apparently admitted organizing the attack. I assume Eitam was a U.S. citizen (his parents both are).
Khaled Abu Toameh: Abbas's Trap: The Big Bluff
Those who rushed to declare the death of the Oslo Accords fell into Abbas's trap.
Abbas's threats are mainly designed to scare the international community into pressuring Israel to offer Abbas more concessions. He is hoping that inaccurate headlines concerning the purported abrogation of the Oslo Accords will cause panic in Washington and European capitals, prompting world leaders to demand that Israel give Abbas everything he asks for.
Abbas knows that cancelling the agreements with Israel would mean dissolving his Palestinian Authority, and the end of his political career.
The tens of thousands of Arab refugees now seeking asylum in Europe could not care less about the "occupation" and settlements.
Ironically, Abbas declared that, "We are working on spreading the culture of peace and coexistence between our people and in our region." But his harsh words against Israel, in addition to continued anti-Israel incitement in the Palestinian media, prove that he is moving in the opposite direction. This form of incitement destroys any chance of peace.
 Jpost Editorial: Abbas’s speech
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas intended to escalate the tension with Israel when he declared on Wednesday that Palestinians living in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip would no longer be bound by the Oslo Accords.
Perhaps his speech was a desperate attempt to gain the attention of a United Nations General Assembly rightly preoccupied with much bigger and more important issues, namely the sectarian bloodbath in Syria that has metastasized throughout the region and has created a major humanitarian crisis for Europe.
Whatever Abbas’s motivation, it is too early to know the operative ramifications of what he said. On the one hand, the Palestinian president was calling on the nations of the world to take punitive actions against Israel as a country that is supposedly illegally occupying another nation.
But, in what can be seen as a positive non-declaration, Abbas stopped short of calling for an end to security and economic cooperation between the PA and Israel. That’s because he understands that an end to such cooperation would lead to the collapse of the PA. And this would be a disaster for the Palestinians, as well as for Israel.
Tens of thousands of PA employees would stop getting paid. Everything from garbage collection to law enforcement would cease to function properly and Hamas and Islamic Jihad would take advantage of the situation.
Win $1 Million If You Can Prove PLO Accepted Israel
New York businessman William Langfan has offered an unprecedented $1 million prize to anyone who shows that the Palestinian National Council (PNC) has ever changed the PLO charter to accept Israel's existence, as is widely believed.
The offer is particularly timely, less than 24 hours after Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas announced that he no longer sees himself as bound by the Oslo Accords.
Probably the most important obligation in the “Peace Process” was a promise to annul the onerous clauses of their 1964 Palestinian National Charter. “The importance of the charter to the Palestinians can not be exaggerated,” according to Langfan. “To the Palestinians, it is virtually their 'Junior Koran.' These clauses in the charter declared the establishment of Israel illegal and void and called for armed resistance until Palestine is liberated.”
In an exclusive interview with Arutz Sheva's Baruch Gordon, Langfan explained that in 1993, when Israel and the PLO were about to sign the Oslo Accords, then-PLO chairman Yasser Arafat sent a letter to then-Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, in which he agreed to cancel the clauses in the charter that called for an armed struggle against Israel, and promised to submit the matter to the PNC for approval.
That letter was then used for years as supposed proof that the PLO had recognized Israel.
However, Langfan noted that according to the charter itself, a two-thirds majority vote would be necessary to make changes in the charter.

Melanie Phillips: Putin and the West’s moral vacuum
By failing to expose the Big Lies about Israel, the West is complicit in both the rise of anti-Jewish bigotry at home and the paranoid hysteria against Israel and the Jews coursing through the Arab and Muslim world.
The paralysis of the West in the face of the chaos in the Middle East and the mass exodus of people from the developing world is causing some to predict the collapse of Europe (and the US isn’t immune from this cultural tsunami either).
The real issue, though, is not so much mass migration as moral collapse. And anti-Jewish attitudes are at the very core of that collapse.
The West followed its perpetration of and complicity in the Holocaust with an onslaught against the Mosaic laws at the root of western civilization. Those ethical codes were dumped in favor of self-gratification. Belief in western superiority over other cultures was replaced by moral and cultural relativism, multiculturalism and defeatism.
Both Obama and the British Labour party’s new unashamed Marxist leader, Jeremy Corbyn, are regarded by critics as some kind of aberration. They are not. They are merely extreme exemplars of the liberal mindset which is now bringing the West to its knees.
Jews are understandably wary of making themselves the center of anyone else’s story.
But they are inescapably at the epicenter of the West’s convulsions. The West will only save itself if it finally grasps that to do so it needs fully to embrace Israel and the Jewish story.
The Delusional State of Denial
They deny our existence. They deny our heritage. They deny out history, our belonging. They even deny the walls and shrines that scream our name.
It’s not some state created in peace that they want. It is a delusional dream in which Israel doesn’t exist.
It’s not Filastin. It’s Fantasy Land.
And we are expected to play along with this deception, to ignore our own rights. Dispense with our ownership. Throw away our property rights.
For what?
To accommodate these liars, these rogues?
What are we doing to ourselves?
We are indulging in the same fraudulent delusion as our enemy.
To what end?
To sleepwalk to our own oblivion.
This is nonsense. This is madness. This is fevered insanity to which no nation on earth has ever subscribed.
At funeral of slain couple, president vows terror won’t halt settlement building
Thousands of mourners gathered in Jerusalem on Friday for the funerals of Eitam and Naama Henkin, who were shot to death in the West Bank on Thursday night.
Speaking at the funeral, President Reuven Rivlin asserted Israel’s sovereignty over the West Bank and said settlement construction would continue. He stated that, in the same way that Israel never built because of terror, it wouldn’t stop building because of it.
Eitam Henkin’s mother, meanwhile, said the grandparents would raise the slain couple’s children, who witnessed the attack, as their own.
Hundreds of IDF soldiers join manhunt for Henkin killers
In the West Bank, hundreds of Israeli troops were hunting Friday for the suspected Palestinian terrorists. The Abdel Qader al-Husseini Brigades, a group affiliated with Fatah’s al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Israeli security forces were conducting an “intensive search” on the ground, combined with intelligence efforts, said army spokesman Arye Shalicar.
Apprehensive of rising tensions, the army said it would be deploying “four battalions in order to prevent an escalation of violence in the area adjacent to the location of the attack.”
An AFP journalist saw Israeli soldiers searching cars along roads around the attack site.
Also Friday, Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon toured the site of the attack with Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot and Shin Bet chief Yoram Cohen, and vowed the terrorists would be swiftly caught.
The security forces will “spare no efforts to arrest the killers and their sponsors,” Ya’alon said.
Netanyahu: Palestinian Temple Mount incitement responsible for terror attack that killed Israeli couple
Palestinian incitement over the issue of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem is responsible for the terror attack that killed an Israeli couple as they drove home in Judea and Samaria with their four children on Thursday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.
“The killers knew that they were murdering a mother and father, the children were there [in the car]. It has been proven again that the wild Palestinian incitement leads to acts of terrorism and murder such as we have seen this evening,” said Netanyahu.
“We’ve witnessed how they have spoken of our ‘cruel acts’ on the Temple Mount, a charge that is baseless. Unfortunately, these kinds of words have consequences,” Netanyahu said. He added that he was disappointed that the Palestinian Authority had not immediately condemned the shooting death of Eitam and Naama Henkin, in the same way that Israel did.
Israel immediately condemned the July attack by Jewish extremists who torched a home in the Palestinian village of Duma, killing Saad and Reham Dewabsha and their toddler, Ali, Netanyahu said.
He explained how he went to the hospital to visit the Dewabsha’s other son, Ahmed, who is recovering from his injuries in the fire.
“Compare this to the silence of the Palestinian leadership now, I have not heard their condemnation,” Netanyahu said.
ADL: PA Incitement to Blame for Horrific Murder
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) expressed shock and outrage at the brutal murder of an Israeli couple at the hands of Palestinian terrorists on Friday, pointing to the Palestinian Authority (PA)'s incitement campaign as the direct cause of the murders.
“There are no words to sufficiently express our outrage, horror and sorrow over this heinous attack which left four orphaned kids who witnessed the murder of their parents," Carole Nuriel, Acting Director of the ADL Israel office, said in a statement.
"In a week where world leaders gather at the UN to discuss issues of peace and security, they should all take the opportunity to publicly condemn the attack and the incitement against Israel by the Palestinian Authority, which has created a fertile ground for the recent spate of violence in the West Bank [Judea-Samaria - ed.] and in Jerusalem."
Photos: Judea and Samaria Residents Protest Terror Attack
Residents of the Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria took to the streets on Thursday night to protest the deteriorating security situation in Judea and Samaria, following the shooting attack in which Rabbi Eitam and Naama Henkin were murdered in front of their children.
The protests took place at the Avnei Hefetz junction in Samaria, as well as near Yitzhar and Kedumim.
In another protest, dozens of residents of Kiryat Arba marched on the road towards the Arab village of Beyt Anun, and some started throwing stones at homes of Arabs. There were no reports of further clashes or injuries.
Residents from the town of Beit El arrived at the Givat Assaf junction, where they held a prayer in memory of the victims and called on the Israeli government to restore security immediately.
Where is the World When it Comes to 4 Israeli Orphans?
The images are tragic: Jewish bodies lying on the road and inside the car, Jewish blood all over the car, four Jewish orphans who fled the scene...A scene that is all too reminiscent of the Holocaust.
Jewish bodies turned into fountains of blood from delirious Islamist murderers who shouted "Allah Akbar".
Jewish children aged 4 months, 4, 7 and 9 years old witnessed their parents being gunned down,. Jews slaughtered just because they were Jews in the Biblical Samaria region.
A rabbi and dedicated educator, Eitam Henkin, and his wife, Naama Henkin, deleted from the face of earth.
They lived in Neria, a lovely, thriving Jewish community in the Binyamin area which the world calls a "settlement". The same town of the Schijveschuurder family, another Jewish family slain, five of them murdered at the Sbarro restaurant in Jerusalem while enjoying a peaceful lunch.
PMW: Fatah claims responsibility for murder of young Israeli couple in front of their children
A senior official of Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement posted on his Facebook Page that Fatah was accepting responsibility for yesterday’s murder of a young Israeli couple, Eitam and Naama Henkin, in front of their four children.
Fatah Central Committee member Mahmoud Al-Aloul posted:
“The Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian National Liberation Movement Fatah, accepted responsibility for the Itamar operation (i.e., murder of Eitam and Naama Henkin), carried out against settlers, leading to their deaths.”

Hamas, Fatah Welcome Samaria Terrorist Attack
Both the Fatah and the Hamas organizations on Thursday night praised the terrorists who carried out the attack in Samaria, in which Rabbi Eitam and Naama Henkin were murdered in front of their four children.
According to Kol Yisrael radio, a Hamas spokesman said the group "welcomes the heroic attack and calls for more quality attacks. The Zionists will pay the price for Netanyahu’s criminal policy everywhere.”
Meanwhile, Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah movement, often touted as a “peace partner” for Israel, welcomed the terror attack as well.
Azzam al-Ahmed, a senior member of the group’s leadership, was quoted by Kol Yisrael as having told Hamas’s Al-Quds TV: “The attack is a natural response to the crimes of the settlers and every action has a reaction.”
Furious NY Assemblyman: We're Dealing With Animals
A furious New York Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) responded to the murder of Rabbi Eitam and Naama Henkin Thursday night by Arab terrorists, telling Arutz Sheva that Israel is dealing with "animals."
In the attack, which was claimed by the "armed wing" of Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction, the young couple were gunned down while driving in their car as their four children sat in the backseat, just outside of Itamar in Samaria.
"A six-month-old who was left without a mother, without a father," said a visibly shaken Hikind. "When does this murder end?"
"Who's to blame for this? None other than the leader of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, who incites the Palestinians on a regular basis."
EU Calls For Palestinian State After Henkin Murders
European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini on Friday released a condolence statement over the horrific murders of Rabbi Eitam and Naama Henkin late Thursday night, but not without calling on both Israelis and Palestinian Arabs to impose "calm" despite the crime.
"Today we mourn once again the loss of human lives," Mogherini said. "The killing of an Israeli couple has left four young children orphaned and, once again, civilians have been targeted so as to cause terrible suffering and to try to undermine any possibility of a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."
"The EU expresses its condolences to the Henkin family," she continued. "The perpetrators of this act must be brought to justice."
Mogherini warned, however, that "restraint and calm" are needed despite the terror.
US, UN condemn Palestinian terror attack on family of six
The United States and the United Nations on Thursday condemned the Palestinian shooting attack that killed an Israeli couple and urged all sides to refrain from continued action that would escalate an already tense situation.
“We extend our condolences to the victims’ family. We urge all sides to maintain calm, avoid escalating tensions in the wake of this tragedy, and work together to bring the perpetrators to justice,” the US State Department said.
The couple, Eitam and Na’ama Henkin, were killed by a Palestinian terrorist as they drove with their four children in the West Bank on Thursday night.
Eitam is assumed to be a US citizen. His mother Channa was born in the US and heads the Nishmat seminary for women in Jerusalem.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also condemned the attack during a prescheduled meeting he held with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York shortly after the incident.
US Ambassador Condemns 'Shocking' Terrorist Double-Murder
America's Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro condemned the murder of Israeli parents Naama and Eitam Henkin by Palestinian terrorists Thursday night.
As the couple's funeral took place Friday morning, Shapiro issued a series of messages on Twitter, in Hebrew and English, issuing the US government's condolences to the Henkin family and condemning the heinous murder of two parents in front of their young children.
"We strongly condemn the murders of Eitam & Naama Henkin, z"l, which orphaned their children. Support efforts 2 bring terrorists 2 justice," Shapiro tweeted.
PreOccupiedTerritory: Obama Rescinds Claim Of Responsibility For Henkin Murders (satire)
US President Barack Obama walked back earlier comments today, saying that he did not intend to claim credit for the terrorist attack last night that killed two Israelis, and that his words had been misunderstood.
Obama had initially said his administration was behind the attack, but this morning he modified that position, saying instead that while the actual terrorism was perpetrated by operatives of Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah faction, White House policies and diplomacy played a key role in making the murders of Eitam and Naama Henkin possible. The couple’s four children were unhurt in the shooting attack on the family’s car, a factor that Obama acknowledged made it easier to relinquish claiming credit for the act.
“I do not wish to steal the thunder of those who risked actual life and limb to destroy other people’s lives and limbs,” said the president at a press conference. “My remarks last night must be understood as underscoring the important role my administration continues to play in the Middle East, and not, heaven forbid, to imply that our friends and allies in the Palestine Liberation Organization are somehow uninvolved. My words were cobbled together in haste, and as such, were too easily prone to misinterpretation. For that offense I apologize.”
Sometimes, silence speaks louder than words
Netanyahu did make a very cogent point, when he entreated the world powers to take the restrictions placed on Iran after the nuclear deal more seriously than they took the restrictions placed on Iran before the accord was signed.
“As this deal with Iran moves ahead, I hope you’ll enforce it… how can I put this? With a little more rigor than you showed with the six Security Council resolutions that Iran has systematically violated and which now have been effectively discarded,” he said dryly.
Signaling that he has accepted that the Iran deal is actually going to be implemented, he made three suggestions that are hard to argue with.
“First, make Iran comply with all its nuclear obligations. Keep Iran’s feet to the fire. Second, check Iran’s regional aggression. Support and strengthen those fighting Iran’s aggression, beginning with Israel. Third, use sanctions and all the tools available to you to tear down Iran’s global terror network.”
It’s easy to dismiss his declared readiness to immediately resume peace negotiations with the Palestinians as mere lip service. It’s easy to be bored by his argument that the nuclear deal won’t solve any problems but rather will provide “theocratic Iran with sharper claws and sharper fangs.”
But it’s hard to disagree with Netanyahu’s assertion that now that the Iran agreement is a done deal, the world must not become complacent about a regime that adamantly persists in its aggressive behavior.
Listen to the Deafening Silence
It must be understood that the problem Israel faces isn’t a function of hostility to Netanyahu or even a product of the fractured relationship between the prime minister and Obama. As Netanyahu noted, in just the last year the UN passed 20 resolutions unfairly condemning Israel and only one noting the catastrophe in Syria. That tells us everything we need to know about the way traditional anti-Semitism has morphed into an ideology that masquerades as mere criticism of Israel or open anti-Zionism.
Though few may believe Abbas’s threats, Israelis must take the willingness of the international community to listen to and to even applaud the lies he spread about Israel and the peace process. The Palestinians killed Oslo 15 years ago when they answered an Israeli peace offer of statehood with a terrorist war of attrition. Abbas and other so-called moderates continue to refuse to recognize the legitimacy of a Jewish state no matter where its borders might be drawn. But still the Obama administration and the UN majority continue to blame the Israelis for the failure to craft a peace treaty that the Palestinians have no interest in ever signing.
Netanyahu was right. At the heart of all of Israel’s international diplomacy problems is a deafening silence about the threats to Jewish existence and the determination of Islamist forces to make good on those pledges via terror and possibly even nuclear weapons. The root of that silence isn’t dissatisfaction with Netanyahu, anger about Israeli settlements or even sympathy for the Palestinians or Iran. The silence begins and ends with hatred of Jews. Until the UN is cured of this malady and its halls cease to be a cesspool of prejudice, the silence will continue.
Obama Ordered Kerry and Samantha Powers to Snub Netanyahu at UN
President Barack Obama instructed U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and U.N. Ambassador Samantha Power to be absent from the U.N. General Assembly during Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s speech Thursday night.
Powers’ absence was reported by The Daily Caller, based on a source who informed former U.S. diplomat and Fox News contributor Richard Grenell of the snub.
MSNBC reported on Kerry’s absence.
The United States was represented at the speech by Daniel Shapiro, its Ambassador to Israel, and David Pressman and Richard Erdman, the U.S. Alternate Representatives to the United Nations.
The audience at the General Assembly interrupted Netanyahu’s speech several times with applause, but the U.S. delegates kept their hands in their laps. One of the ovations followed the Prime Minister’s charged that the nuclear deal with Iran already has resulted in more terror and that it will bring war, not peace.
Hotovely Confronts Jordanian Foreign Minister at UN
During a donor nation conference on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Thursday, Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely (Likud) engaged Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh in a sharp exchange over the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism.
At the conference, Hotovely criticized Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas's call for violence last month, when he said "the Al-Aqsa (Mosque on the Mount - ed.) is ours...and they (Jews) have no right to defile it with their filthy feet," and went on to praise terrorist "martyrs" spilling blood in Jerusalem.
"As long as the Palestinians continue to warp the historical truth and negate the rights of Jews to go up to the holiest site to Judaism - there won't be any advancement in the relations between the sides," warned Hotovely, noting that the Temple Mount is the site of the First and Second Temples.
"Jerusalem," continued Hotovely, "is the united capital of Israel, and it will remain that way, and those who breach the status quo systematically with violence are the Arabs."
Europe Gives More Money to UNRWA as Part of Its Solution to Migrant Crisis
Against the backdrop of the current refugee crisis that has swamped Europe, the European Union announced on September 30 that it will be providing more financial assistance to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), an organization that provides support for Palestinian refugees living within and around Israel.
“This is an investment in their future and at the same time an investment in the stability in Europe’s neighborhood,” said Commission for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn. “This additional contribution will also allow UNRWA to bridge its financing gap in 2015 and to move forward in the implementation of its reform process.”
The assistance package, which increases the total amount of E.U. support for UNRWA this year to 125 million euros, comes as part of an agreement that was signed between Hahn and UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl. The extra money will be allocated for many of the services provided by UNRWA, such as education and healthcare.
New York Times: Abbas Has “Given Up” on Peace
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s announcement Wednesday that he no longer considers himself bound by the Oslo Accords shows that he has “effectively given up” on a negotiated peace deal with Israel, The New York Times stated in a staff editorial.
It is hard to gauge what President Abbas’s declaration before the United Nations General Assembly amounts to. He did not specify what tangible actions might follow his rejection of Oslo, and it would be foolhardy for him to cut the existing security, economic and civil cooperation with Israel, or to incite the Palestinians to more violence, especially at a time of high tensions over holy places in Jerusalem. On the Israeli side, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a brief statement that dismissed Mr. Abbas’s speech as “deceitful” without any notice of his main announcement.
There is no question that Mr. Abbas is an acutely bitter man. At 80, he has effectively given up on ever achieving a negotiated Palestinian state; he is increasingly unpopular among the Palestinians, and the Palestinian Authority he leads effectively controls only the West Bank since Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in 2007. His chief preoccupation lately has been on a series of gestures, largely futile, to gain international recognition of a Palestinian state, like the official raising of the Palestinian flag at the United Nations on Wednesday.
British PM Criticizes Obama, Names Islamist Terrorism as World’s Biggest Threat
British Prime Minister David Cameron implicitly criticized U.S. President Barack Obama during a meeting of world leaders chaired by Obama at the United Nations Tuesday, pointing out that Obama’s point that “violent extremism is not unique to any one faith” does not fully address the fact that, in Cameron’s view, “Islamist extremist violence” is the “biggest problem we have today.”
The Washington Times reported more:
Well aware that Mr. Obama shuns the term “Islamist extremists,” the Conservative British prime minister reacted strongly at the meeting when the president, who chaired the session, advised the assembled foreign leaders to avoid profiling Muslims because “violent extremism is not unique to any one faith.”
“Barack, you said it and you’re right — every religion has its extremists,” Mr. Cameron said. “But we have to be frank that the biggest problem we have today is the Islamist extremist violence that has given birth to ISIL, to al-Shabab, to al-Nusra, al Qaeda and so many other groups.”
What does Jerusalem mean to the Muslims?
The situation on the Temple Mount and in the alleyways of the Old City, with Jews being humiliated for merely wishing to openly pray, is seen by many as an issue that is only important to religious people. That is not the case. Israeli Arab MK Jamal Zahalka once told me that he was an atheist, so what was he doing on the Temple Mount? What did it mean when he yelled, "This is my house, not yours"? After all, "this is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven" (Genesis 28:17) -- all peoples are invited to climb and pray at the Temple Mount. So what does a non-religious MK care about other people praying?
Along almost all of Islamic history, Jerusalem enjoyed a very marginal status. Research shows that the sanctity of Jerusalem in the Islamic tradition has been expressly influenced by the Jews' and Christians' reverence for the city. For many Muslims, more than the Crusaders' hold over the city, the Jews' sovereignty over Jerusalem after the Six-Day War was a real offense.
Both Christianity and Islam based their faiths on "replacement theology" -- the idea that God first chose the Jews as his chosen people, but when they refused to accept Jesus as the messiah or Muhammad as the prophet, God abandoned the Jews and chose a new people. That is why the theological rivalry between Christianity and Islam isn't very prominent, as opposed to the hundreds of years and millions of pages that both Christians and Muslims have devoted to confronting the Jewish faith and tradition.
Ever since the 1960s, a theological revolution has been underway in the Christian world in regard to the Jewish people and the validity of replacement theology. In recent years, I have reported on interesting voices in the Christian world who reject replacement theology, or at least acknowledge the fact that Christianity evolved from Judaism. Hence the Christian recognition of the Jewish people's historical and religious (and legal) link to their land.
Quebec’s judge states that Israeli military activity in Gaza is a righteous act of self-defense
Montréal judge Stephen J. Gallagher dismissed Palestinian’s appeal for Canadian refugee status, stating that his claim is resting upon his subjective views of the political situation in Gaza.
He determined that the argument that the state of Israel is specifically persecuting Palestinian people living in Gaza is invalid: “This is a conflict coupled with a security issue which has been and continues to be closely studied by an extensive range of international observers and human right organizations. In addition, this conflict is of very long standing. There are certainly arguments that Israel’s treatment of the population Gaza constitutes persecution but this is not the position of a range of authoritative experts and human rights groups.”
He also referred to the UK Operational Guidance Note for the Occupied Palestinian Territories , which concludes that “There is a generalised state of insecurity in the OPT, but current reports of tension and security breaches do not indicate that there would be a consistent pattern of gross and systematic violation of rights under Article 3 of the ECHR.”
Judge Gallagher asserted that it’s illogical to claim that Israeli government is targeting all Palestinians, when in truth Israel has been defending itself for years and “It is not a ‘political opinion’ to demand and work towards the destruction of another country and countries in international law have the right to defend themselves.” Due to the political situation, residents of Gaza are at constant risk of begin caught in the crossfire of efforts to destroy Israel by Hamas and armed militants. Thus, the Applicant is simply an individual who “would be caught in the cross-fire of various dangerous and destructive policies pursued by the leadership of several political organizations in the region including Hamas” and not someone who will be sought or targeted by anyone in Gaza.
Suspended Israeli Officer Defends Smashing of Journalists’ Cameras
“Aleph,” the deputy commander of a Givati Brigade unit that confronted journalists and broke their cameras, defended his actions to Israel’s Channel 2 on Thursday.
The IDF Spokesman’s Office said that the commander was suspended from operational duty, adding, “The IDF considers the incident grave, and in contravention of its code of ethics and professional standards.”
“Aleph”‘s suspension came after an inquiry into the incident by Givati Brigade Commander Col. Yaron Finkelman, who found that “Aleph” had, “acted in a manner unbefitting of an IDF commander,” a finding that was upheld by Chief of Southern Command Staff Brigadier General Udi Ben Moha.
“Aleph” claimed that he did not attack the journalists, asserting that the video was edited. He also expressed his dismay at his suspension, saying, “They’re bleeding me dry. I’m very disappointed with my commanders, who gave me no support.”
He continued, “My commanders never taught me how to behave around journalists — especially not ones like these who were disrupting our operations.”
During his interrogation yesterday by the Military Police, “Aleph,” had said that “the photographers, actively and maliciously, were there for 15 minutes,” during which time they, “climbed into the [military] jeep and tried to photograph weapons and secret warfare systems that were there.”
Syria: Time to Reformulate the Rules of the Game
Consequences for Israel
In practice, Syria is already split internally and divided into areas under the influence of external powers. As the Russians deploy, the coastal region will all but come directly under their control. Northern Syria, especially the Kurdish region, is under Turkish influence. The central axis of Syria – from Damascus to Homs and Aleppo – and the Syrian-Lebanese border are, with Hizbollah’s help, under Iranian influence. Eastern Syria is the battlefield for the war by the US-led international coalition against the Islamic State.
The only area not claimed by an outside force as a critical interest is the southern Syrian expanse, including the Golan Heights. It is critical that Israel retain operational freedom of action in this sector and in Lebanon. Israel was therefore shocked once it became clear that Russia was sending forces and building military strongholds on the Syrian coast. This was the reason Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accompanied by IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot, rushed to Moscow: to formulate understandings on avoiding clashes between Russian and Israeli forces, especially aerial clashes, and preventing the arrival of advanced Russian weapons, such as surface-to-air missiles, that could impinge on the IDF’s operational freedom of action in Lebanon and southern Syria. Moreover, Israel is concerned that advanced weapons that Russia supplies to Assad’s forces will end up in Hizbollah hands, especially in Lebanon. Perhaps Israel was also testing the possibility of the Russian track being used in reaching understandings on rewriting the rules of the game with regard to the Iran-Assad-Hizbollah axis, based on the awareness of the shared threat inherent in the Islamic State.
Israel must thus undertake an in-depth analysis of the changing rules of the game, in face of the Russian involvement and Moscow’s determination to shape the future of Syria. This new situation changes the internal and external balance of power in Syria and increases the risk of events spilling over to Israel, such as the possibility that Salafist jihadi rebel forces will be drawn to southern Syria, the only Syrian sector currently free of active influence by external actors. The Israeli government must formulate its long term goals for the north, including willingness to fight for operational freedom of action, and the ability to establish an Israeli area of influence in southern Lebanon, the Golan Heights, and southern Syria.
Bar Kokhba-era antiquities site razed by Palestinian vandals
An antiquities site that served as an encampment for Jewish leader Shimon Bar Kokhba during his revolt against the Romans from 132 to 136 C.E. has been destroyed by Palestinian vandals.
Discoveries made at the Kiryat Arabia site, located near the village al-Arub in Gush Etzion, have been a vital source of information about the period of the Bar Kokhba Revolt, and its destruction is a blow to research efforts.
In 1968, a winding, branching cave was discovered at the site, the first of the system of caves where Bar Kokhba hid to be discovered. A few years later, the Kfar Etzion Field School began conducting excavations at the site under the guidance of Professor Yoram Tsafrir, which turned up exciting finds and shed light on the final days of the revolt.
The cave was originally dug beneath the ancient community of Kiryat Arabia, which is mentioned in scrolls found at Nahal Hever in the Judean Desert. The Nahal Hever scrolls also include military correspondence between Bar Kokhba and his fighters.
Replacing Hamas: Iran's New Proxy Militia in Gaza
With millions of dollars in Iranian funding, a marginal PIJ splinter faction is aiming to establish a powerful, Hezbollah-style proxy in Gaza.
Since the start of the civil war in Syria, the Iranian-funded Palestinian militant group Hamas has irked Tehran in a number of ways. First, it refused to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, one of Iran's allies. Then it further provoked Tehran by establishing closer ties with Turkey, moving its headquarters from the West Bank to Istanbul. In July, top Hamas leaders sought to cultivate ties with another of Iran's enemies -- Saudi Arabia -- and even flew to Riyadh to meet with Saudi King Salman.
Iran has responded to Hamas' defiance by reducing funding and making a serious attempt at empowering another Palestinian terror group in the Gaza Strip. Over the past year and a half, the Quds Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps, assisted by the Palestinian Operations department of Lebanon's Hezbollah, has financed and provided media exposure to the al Sabirin ("the patient") movement in the Gaza Strip. This new militant group seeks to emulate Hezbollah and the Iraqi Shiite militias such as the Badr Organization, known for its blatant pro-Iranian sentiments. Iran hopes that al Sabirin will become a reliable proxy militia in Gaza.

The demand for undeserved "dignity" is part of the Arab honor/shame culture that drives nearly all of their actions.

The opposite of honor is shame, and one of the most potent ways to be shamed is to be ignored, to be shuffled aside as irrelevant.

In Mahmoud Abbas' interview with Al Quds two weeks ago, when he threatened to drop his bombshell at the UN, included his saying that the Arab world is preoccupied with their own problems and are no longer interested in prioritizing the Palestinian issue. The entire point of announcing his supposed bombshell was to redirect attention away from Yemen, Syria and the other major issues in the Arab world and to reclaim center stage.

To reclaim his sense of "dignity."

He is right - the Arab world increasingly doesn't give a damn about Palestinians. They are sick and tired of their tantrums. Some of the Arab nations paid lip service to the Palestinian issue at the UN but, significantly, the topic was ignored by Morocco, Iraq and especially Jordan.

If Arab nations are going to ignore their Palestinian brethren, then the PLO leaders need to ensure that the West still buys into the "linkage" argument that somehow their issue is linked to Syria, Yemen and ISIS.

Saeb Erekat was incensed that President Obama ignored the Palestinian issue in his UN speech, saying that ISIS cannot be defeated while Israel continues settlement activity and allowing Jews to ascend to the Temple Mount.

Being ignored by the Arabs is badm but being ignored by the West is an affront to their dignity.

Abbas' aide Mahmoud Habash announced only two days ago that if the world would ignore the issue of the Temple Mount in the UN meetings, it could spark "dire consequences" including World War III. Again, this is both a threat and a demand to be considered relevant by the world.

Arab coverage of the raising of the PLO flag at the UN was filled with happiness at the "dignity" that it supposedly brought to them.

Abbas' speech itself included a demand for his people's "human dignity." But his "bombshell" was a dud, and even the Palestinians recognized it as a worthless stunt.

So Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party upped the ante.

And all of these threats, incitement and demands for honor and dignity brings us to the horrific terrorist attack yesterday.

The Fatah group that took responsibility for the murder of the Henkins yesterday ended their statement with this:
Long live the unity of our people and our struggle to regain our dignity and homeland.
Note that they place "dignity" higher than "homeland." To them, murdering a Jewish couple was mostly an attempt to regain "dignity." They are relevant again! They are in the headlines! And some stupid Westerners will once again use this attack as a weapon against Israel by claiming that the "occupation" is what causes violence in the Middle East, just like Erekat said it did!

The Arab nations already know better, because they are seeing first hand that one cannot compare Syrian barrel bombs to Israeli  roadblocks.

But the rest of the world has not yet caught on to the truth. Many non-Arab countries such as Japan and Italy dutifully mentioned "Palestine" in their UN speeches this week.

So the Palestinians demand their "dignity." Dignity can only be achieved by showing that they matter, that they are relevant.

And terror attacks - planned and financed by Mahmoud Abbas' own Fatah party - are the easiest and most efficient manner to achieve relevance and their twisted idea of "dignity."

Khaled Arjah works for UNRWA near Nablus. He is probably a math teacher.

Here are some of the wonderful, peaceful things he has posted on Facebook:

"Breaking the Silence" (meaning, rockets are more powerful than words)

"If we were to reveal what (weapons) we have, both enemies and friends would be surprised"

The banners of our victory have appeared, and the singing of the weapons has risen high

Allah said: "Enter upon them by the gate, for when you have entered it, you shall surely be victorious." (Quran 5:23)

Of course, all of these violate UN and UNRWA principles.

Of course, nothing will happen to fix the problem.

I have started to put all of these examples in a single tag, UNRWA Hate.

Times of Israel reports:
A unit within Fatah’s armed wing assumed responsibility for the murder of an Israeli couple near the West Bank settlement of Itamar.

The Abdel Qader al-Husseini Brigades, a group affiliated with Fatah’s al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, announced on Friday that its men on Thursday night opened fire on the car of Eitam and Naama Henkin, a couple in their 30s, while they were driving home with their four children, aged four months to nine. The children were not wounded in the attack.

Fatah, headed by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, is the largest faction within the Palestine Liberation Organization, which is the governing body in West Bank areas controlled by the Palestinian Authority.
The statement from the Husseini Brigades says:

With Allah’s help and in keeping with our people's right to struggle to recover our usurped homeland and our duty to sacred jihad, our forces on Thursday night carried out a necessary action in which they fired on a car of occupying settlers outside the Itamar settlement, built on Palestinian lands south of Nablus, firing directly on the car, killing a settler and wounding his wife according to enemy media, and the group returned to the safety of the camps.

We warn the enemy against carrying out any action against innocent civilians, wherever they are, because our troops will respond with similar attacks, and we will consider their actions to be war crimes.

Long live the unity of our people and our struggle to regain our dignity and homeland.

Brigades of the Martyr Abdul-Qader al-Husseini Storm Troopers
The Husseini Brigades also shot many rockets from Gaza last year, a fact that practically no media noted, as they want to pretend that Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah is a "moderate" group.

And the Al Aqsa Brigades of Fatah are not a rogue group. Their Abu Nidal Brigades has an article from yesterday about how the Fatah leadership thanked them for their work in general, reproducing the letter on Fatah stationery.

These Fatah groups are paid for and supported by Fatah, and Fatah is led by Mahmoud Abbas, who has never dissociated himself from their actions.

Which means that Mahmoud Abbas is a terrorist leader.

But world leaders, world media, NGOs and "Middle East experts" are so invested in  the myth of Abbas as a peacemaker that they simply ignore the straight line from "Palestinian President" Mahmoud Abbas to depraved terror attacks like this one.
