From Ian:

The Progressive Left and Israel's Right to Exist
At bottom, the bien-pensant view is that (a) Israel is wrong because it's strong; (b) Israel has no right to exist because it is a European state in the Muslim Middle East; and (c) Palestinians and fellow Muslims are not responsible for their fate, or their crimes, because they are oppressed victims.
The left hates Israel’s military strength and its willingness to use it for the same reasons it hates American power. As right-thinking cosmopolitans, they would never approve such brutality. Obama captured this perspective in a Freudian slip. “Whether we like it or not,” he explained, “we remain a dominant military superpower.” The left doesn’t like it. They don’t like it in America, and they don’t like it in Israel. As for Russia, China, Iran, or North Korea brandishing military threats, well, let’s not think about that. The threats may vanish from their minds, but they still threaten everybody else with working synapses.
Not only is Israel powerful, the left (like the Muslim world) sees Israel as a remnant of Europe's crimes: imperialism and the Holocaust. University faculties are preoccupied with imperialism and post-colonial legacies, which they blame for many of the world’s ills. They see Israel through that lens, as a colony of white settlers in an Arab-Muslim region. They blithely ignore the Jewish people’s age-old connection to the land, its continuous presence there, and its central religious significance. And they ignore how many Israelis were driven out of Arab countries, which have become virulently anti-Semitic.
The combination of Israel’s religious heritage, its nationalism, its prosperity, and its unapologetic self-defense combine virtually everything loathed by secular, cosmopolitan intellectuals. That’s why Obama's 2009 Cairo speech offered such a tepid “defense" of Israel's right to exist. Israel was needed, he said, because Jews needed somewhere to go after the Holocaust. That is the view of the average professor of French literature: Israel is the bastard child of Europe’s crimes.
In the left’s worldview, Palestinians and fellow Muslims are not seen as agents of their own history, for good or ill. They are righteous victims. This condescending view is grounded in Jean Jacques Rousseau's gauzy, romantic vision of "noble savages," not yet cursed by civilization. What can be expected of such people? Their crimes are merely "weapons of the weak.” And who are we, the oppressors, to criticize them? That would commit an unforgivable sin, blaming the victim.
For years, this coalition of anti-Zionists has marched across campuses shouting "Palestine, Palestine, must be free, from the Jordan [River] to the sea." The state they demand, from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean, means Israel should disappear completely. So, when Bernie Sanders says Israel has a right to exist, they sit on their hands. Their shameful silence says Israel's very existence is a no longer a "progressive position." (h/t Cliff)
MEMRI: In Eid Al-Adha Editorial, Qatari 'Al-Quds Al-Arabi' Daily Laments State Of Arab World: Muslims Are Slaughtering One Another, Export Nothing But Murder And Terror
The Eid Al-Adha (September 24, 2015) editorial of the London-based Qatari daily Al-Quds Al-Arabi discussed the current state of the Muslim world, and bemoaned how many Muslims are slaughtering their brethren in Arab and Islamic countries. It added that Muslims today are in the throes of an unprecedented catastrophe that surpasses even the loss of Andalusia and of Palestine.
The following are excerpts from the editorial:
"How sadly misleading is this picture, which does not reflect the true state of this nation: One million Muslims in simple white garb, symbolizing a state of abstinence and purity, equality and compassion, stand in a single place as one, praying and offering pleas to a single deity. Despite their differences in color, nationality, tongue, and cultural and political schools of thought, they help each other bear the effort of the pilgrimage to Mount Arafat at high noon...
"Are these pilgrims, these submissive believers, who praise Allah morning and night, among those Muslims who slaughter each other in more than one country, to the point that their lands are awash in blood and tens of thousands of them have been killed or wounded since the last Eid Al-Adha?...
"Have we reached a situation in which we must redefine the term 'Muslim'? Do we even remain an 'Islamic ummah'? And are we still 'the best nation established for mankind' [Koran: 3:110]? Or have we become 'a nation of refugees?' Are Muslims still 'a single body, in which if one organ complains the rest of them hasten to treat and protect it,' [as the hadith says]? Or have they become one body in which one organ kills another and conspires against it?
Is the Pope Ending Catholic Anti-Semitism?
"Nostre Aetate," released in 1965, called for friendship and dialogue between Catholics and Jews, instead of the centuries-long repudiation of Jews by Catholics; St Joseph's University became the first to respond by establishing the Institute for Jewish-Catholic Relations. Is Pope Francis picking up where Pope Paul VI left off?
Can Pope Francis' hopes and dreams for reconciliation of Catholics and Jews override some unfortunate but pressing realities, such the Church's desire to placate the Palestinians?
If Pope Francis is serious about a "journey of friendship" with the Jewish people, perhaps he would not be so quick to approve President Obama's Iran nuclear deal in the name of a hoped-for peace that will most certainly ignite an unhoped-for war between Iran and Israel.
By assisting the UN in establishing the "sustainable development platform," the Pope is offering his permission to the UN -- one of the most anti-Semitic, anti-Israel bodies on the face of the earth -- to usurp power on behalf of a shared utopian agenda. Sustainable development notwithstanding, the UN should be encouraged to clean up its own house before it tries to clean up the world.

Clinton Slams Israel As ‘Cocky’
Just a week before Clinton’s email was sent, she berated Netanyahu in a 45-minute phone call. She demanded that Netanyahu consent to multiple demands to preserve the historically close U.S.-Israel relationship.
Clinton’s anger was due to the announcement that 1,600 new housing units were being built in a mainly Jewish neighborhood in Jerusalem. The announcement came as Vice President Joe Biden was visiting Israel.
Kim Ghattas, a BBC reporter that followed Clinton as secretary of state, wrote in an email to Clinton aide Jake Sullivan that the Israeli side was “sounding a bit cocky” during a press briefing, noting her belief that it was unlikely that the United States would be able to move them toward an agreement.
Clinton discounted that notion.
“They always sound cocky—in the air or on the ground,” wrote Clinton on March 22, 2010.
New Israeli UAV can reach Iran
Aeronautics’ Dominator XP, converted from a civilian craft, can fly at 27,000 feet and carry heavy equipment and specialized sensors.
Israeli security company Aeronautics sold its largest unmanned system, the Dominator XP, to the Mexican government. The new UAV can carry hundreds of kilos of equipment, specialized sensors, and cameras. It can fly at an altitude of 27,000 feet and reach Iran from Israel.
Its operating costs are especially low at only $360 per flight hour. The UAV can also be used for civilian purposes like following icebergs in the North Pole and monitoring oil installations and offshore gas rigs using advanced applications
Before the recent sale to Mexico, mediated by local marketing firm Balam Security, the system had been rented to a variety of customers around the world, including Canada and Turkey.
House Foreign Affairs Chairman Calls for New Sanctions Against Iran Over Human Rights Abuses
The chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA) sent a letter to President Barack Obama on Wednesday calling on the president directly to slap sanctions against senior Iranian officials over “serious human rights abuses against the people of Iran.”
Royce’s call came as Obama met with would leaders on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly’s opening session this week in New York to discuss the implementation of the nuclear deal that would actually lift sanctions against Iran, mostly against its oil and financial sectors.
The letter by Royce, a vocal opponent of the president’s nuclear agreement, noted that since September 2013, shortly before the announcement of an interim agreement with Tehran over its nuclear program was announced, only one Iranian official and “two other entities” have been sanctioned for human rights abuses. This, despite the Obama administration’s insistence that negotiations with Iran and the subsequent deal addressed the nuclear program alone, and did not necessarily signal a thaw in relations with the U.S., which still designates Iran one of three state sponsors of terrorism worldwide, a designation shared with just North Korea and Syria.
US lawmakers push to designate Iranian Guards a terror group
Senator Ted Cruz introduced a Senate bill — the IRGC Terrorist Designation Act — that serves as companion legislation to Rep. Michael McCaul’s House bill, both of which call attention to the fact that the Iranian military organization is not considered a foreign terrorist organization under current State Department designations.
Such a designation provides US law enforcement with enhanced tools to prosecute individuals or groups supporting the organization. Charges can be brought against anyone providing “material support or resources” to the group, including money, identification documents, lodging, training, weapons and transportation. Any foreign member of such an organization can be deported from the United States even if they are in the country legally, and banks are required to freeze any funds tied to designated organizations.
McCaul first introduced legislation calling for the IRGC’s designation in 2012, but it gained new impetus following the nuclear agreement with Iran reached in July – and the failure of the agreement’s opponents to prevent President Barack Obama from lifting sanctions against Tehran. The IRGC is deeply enmeshed in Iran’s military and civilian economy and is likely to be a key beneficiary of some of the anticipated financial windfall as crippling international sanctions are dismantled under the terms of the accord.
The bill’s sponsors believe it will offset some of the benefits the IRGC is expected to receive under the deal.
Brother of Terror Victim: Obama Must Hold Iran Accountable
Kenneth Stethem, a former Navy SEAL and the brother of an American victim of Iranian terrorism, called on President Obama to support a bill that would compel Iran to pay the $43.5 billion it owes to victims of terrorism before receiving sanctions relief.
Stethem joined Rep. Patrick Meehan (R., Pa.) and other lawmakers on Capitol Hill Wednesday to publicize House legislation introduced this week that would bar the Obama administration from releasing $150 billion in unfrozen cash assets to Iran until the country pays the legal penalties awarded to U.S. victims of Iranian terrorism and their families by U.S. courts.
The bill, named the Justice for Victims of Iranian Terrorism Act, is expected to go to the House floor Thursday for a vote and has upwards of 100 cosigners. Sens. Pat Toomey (R., Pa.) and Mark Kirk (R., Ill.) have also introduced companion legislation in the Senate.
“This bill ensures accountability for terrorist acts, and if the president doesn’t take the opportunity and Congress doesn’t take the opportunity to hold Iran accountable for their terrorist actions now, I have to ask, when will they?” Stethem said at a press conference Wednesday.
Iran's Hardliners Compare Historic Handshake Between Obama, Zarif to Pact With Devil
A now-famous handshake between President Barack Obama and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif at the United Nations on Monday was no accident, although their chance meeting was not pre-planned.
The gesture has become the subject of international analysis and criticism with Iranian hardliners calling Zarif “unrevolutionary” and comparing the act to shaking hands with the devil.
Iran Rejects Claims it Sent Arms to Yemen as 'Propaganda'
Iran rejected as "propaganda" on Thursday claims that a seized fishing boat loaded with weapons heading to Yemen was Iranian, the official IRNA news agency reported.
The Saudi-led coalition said on Wednesday that it had seized an Iranian fishing boat in the Arabian Sea loaded with weapons and destined for Shiite rebels it is fighting in Yemen.
A coalition statement said 14 Iranians as well as weapons including anti-tank shells were found on board, and that the boat's papers showed it was registered and licensed for fishing in Iran.
Despite the damning evidence, an Iranian foreign ministry source told IRNA that it was clear "these accusations and propaganda are psychological warfare and baseless."
"After the scandalous Mina tragedy, the coalition forces have resorted to a worn out and repetitious scenario," the source said, adding that Yemeni rebels don't need Iranian arms.
Argentine President: Obama Official Wanted Nuclear Fuel for Iran in 2010
Earlier this week Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, President of Argentina for nearly eight years, spoke before the United Nations General Assembly in New York City and claimed that in 2010 the Obama administration tried to convince the Argentinians to provide Iran with nuclear fuel, a key component of nuclear weapons, reports Mediaite.
Kirchner said that two years into Obama's first term, he sent Gary Samore, former White House Coordinator for Arms Control and Weapons of Mass Destruction, to press Argentina to provide Iran with nuclear fuel:
"In 2010 we were visited in Argentina by Gary Samore, at that time the White House's top advisor in nuclear issues. He came to see us in Argentina with a mission, with an objective: under the control of IAEA, the international organization in the field of weapons control and nuclear regulation, Argentina had supplied in the year 1987, during the first democratic government, the nuclear fuel for the reactor known as 'Teheran.'
Gary Samore had explained to our Minister of Foreign Affairs, Héctor Timerman, that negotiations were underway for the Islamic Republic of Iran to cease with its uranium enrichment activities or to do it to a lesser extent but Iran claimed that it needed to enrich this Teheran nuclear reactor and this was hindering negotiations. They came to ask us, Argentines, to provide the Islamic Republic of Iran with nuclear fuel. Rohani was not in office yet. It was Ahmadinejad's administration and negotiations had already started."

'Anti-Israel boycotts violate international trade laws'
A group of foreign lawmakers visiting Israel announced Wednesday that its members plan to pursue a bill stating that boycotts against products manufactured in Judea and Samaria communities are in violation of international trade and commerce laws.
Speaking with reporters at the Binyamin Regional Council's industrial park, the delegation, comprising 22 parliamentarians from the European Union, Africa, and Central and South America, stated its members adamantly oppose the EU's decision to label settlement-made products, and that they plan to pursue measures to counter it.
They MPs further stated they were opposed to any form of economic sanctions that may be imposed on Israel by European countries, and that they support Judea and Samaria communities' business ventures.
"I'm proud to be here and to see the collaboration between Arabs and Jews in Binyamin," European Parliament representative Bas Belder from the Netherlands said, adding the delegation "will stand steadfast against any boycott of Israeli products."
Finnish MP: Most of Europe is Anti-Israel
Arutz Sheva spoke with Finnish MP Peter Ostman, who is visiting Israel as part of a delegation of 22 parliamentarians from 18 different countries as part of the Israel Allies Foundation's annual Jerusalem Chairman’s Conference.
The delegation, led by European Parliament member Bastiaan Belder, on Wednesday toured Judea and Samaria and visited the Rami Levy supermarket in Sh'ar Binyamin to hear from Arabs and Jews who work together every day.
Israel, Ostman said, “has been in my heart since I became a member of the Finnish parliament, and now in this term I have been appointed as chair of the Finland-Israeli friendship group in parliament, so it was my duty to come to the promised land, Israel.”
“We have really enjoyed our stay here,” he continued, and then expressed regret that there is so much anti-Israel sentiment in Europe.
“Most of the member states in Europe are more pro-Palestinian than pro-Israel,” admitted Ostman. “During my work in parliament I have been able to get the correct information from different sources, and I have heard lots of stories. What we see here today (Jews and Arabs working together in Judea and Samaria -ed.) is a good example of it and I can just say to those who still have their doubts: ‘Come and see it with your own eyes.’”
How European Social-Democrats support Palestinian Murderers
With the election of Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the British Labour party the anti-Israeli incitement by European social democrats has crossed a new red line. Corbyn is not just another pro-Palestinian. Several years ago, he called a Hamas and Hezbollah delegation ‘his friends,’ despite the fact that both organizations promote genocide of the Jews. Ghazi Hamad, deputy foreign minister of the Islamo-Nazi movement Hamas, praised Corbyn at the beginning of September, describing him as ‘a man of conscience.”
Corbyn is open about where he stands by calling such criminals his friends. Many other European social democrats support crime-promoting Palestinians more insidiously. One typical ‘subterranean’ method is to attack Israel while remaining silent on the subject of Hamas’ genocidal plans against the Jews and the glorification of murderers of civilians by the Palestinian Authority and President Mohammed Abbas, leader of Fatah, the second largest Palestinian party.
In an interview with Norway’s commercial channel TV2 in 2011, Jonas Gahr Stoere, then Norwegian Foreign Minister and currently Labor Party leader, initially denied that he had spoken directly with Hamas leader Khaled Mashal several times on the phone. The interviewer replied that Mashal had confirmed that he had been in contact with the Foreign Minister at the time. Stoere then asked to stop the tape and restart the interview. He explained that the contacts with Mashal were instigated following a request by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
Shaked Suspects Leftist NGOs Not Reporting Foreign Funding
Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked is seeking to open an investigation against several leftist non-profits responsible for harassing IDF troops and disseminating propaganda suggesting that they abandon their posts and refuse to serve in Judea and Samaria, Walla! News reports.
The groups, Shaked believes, have been receiving contributions from foreign organizations and governments but have failed to report theirs relationships with these organizations to Israeli authorities.
Receipt of money from foreign governments would require the groups to register as foreign agents, which would limit their access to IDF checkpoints and other security installations.
Shaked has asked the Finance Ministry's Registrar of Non-Profit Organizations to conduct an initial check of the long-standing rumors regarding the foreign funding, as a first step to a full-blown investigation.
BDS SA targets Woolworths, Israel, makings of a misdirected campaign
Such actions have not caused the slightest harm to Israel, nor have they helped the Palestinians in any way. Instead, they have sown further discord and division in a country already plagued by such ills.
In the final analysis, Woolworths says that pro-Palestinian activism had little impact in their charity fund-raising attempts with Pharrell Williams.
Woolworths CEO Ian Moir spoke at a primary school in Soweto where Williams planted a tree as part of a school charity campaign. Moir added that BDS SA’s protest at Williams’ concert in Cape Town was unsuccessful.
Begging the question then, what has BDS actually achieved, if not simply to rile up misdirected anger and anti-Semitism in South Africa?
It is no wonder that BDS’ national coordinator, Muhammad Desai, reportedly stated that “for those of your comrades and friends that have gone back to Woolworths, we know you, where know where you live, come back home” – suggesting that all is not well with the Woolworths campaign.
Failure and compassion fatigue of a pro-Palestinian campaign that has long veered off course, has set in – BDS, of course, would want us to be believe otherwise.
South Africa won’t push ‘anti-Semitic’ dual citizenship ban
South Africa is not planning to ban dual citizenship, a senior official told Jewish organizations Wednesday, after the country’s government was said to be considering a policy meant to stop the country’s Jews from joining the Israeli army.
Dual citizenship is protected by the Citizenship Act, and the government has no plans to make changes to the policy, Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba said, according to a Thursday statement by the South African Jewish Board of Deputies.
The SAJBD and the South African Zionist Federation had accused senior ANC official Obed Bapela of anti-Semitism and unfairly singling out the country’s Jewish population.
The government does not tolerate anti-Semitism or other forms of racism, Gigaba told the SAJBD and SAZF leadership.
BDS Activist Finds Sympathetic Audience in Malaysia, Where Jews Are Hated
Anna Baltzer, National BDS organizer for the U.S. Campaign to End the Occupation, recently traveled to Malaysia, a nearly Jew-free country where child marriage is legal and Bibles have been burnt. According to Robert Fulford, the Malaysian government has distributed antisemitic sermons to be read in mosques, and politicians distribute copies of Henry Ford’s book, The International Jew.
The so-called human rights activist went to Malaysia to promote the cause of boycotts, divestments and sanctions against the Jewish state.
Baltzer, who was introduced as a “Jewish American” was given a positive reception at the Sept. 12 event. “I’m really honored to be here,” she told the audience at a pro-BDS conference organized by the anti-Israel organization Viva Palestina in Malaysia. “I’ve been around your country, traveling a little bit, getting to know the people, loving the food. It’s been wonderful.”
During her talk, Baltzer, a St. Louis resident, indicated that she found the political atmosphere in Malaysia to be more amenable to the BDS cause than the United States, where “so much of our energy is spent fighting incredible ignorance and racism that people do not understand what’s happening in Palestine.”
2 pro-Palestinian groups: Israel advocates threaten free speech on campus
A Jewish pro-Palestinian group has issued a report claiming that Israel advocates are using “false charges” to silence criticism of Israel on U.S. campuses.
The Jewish Voice for Peace report was released on Wednesday, the same day that Palestine Legal and the Center for Constitutional Rights issued a separate report making similar arguments.
Called “Stifling Dissent,” the JVP report accuses numerous Jewish organizations of seeking “to muzzle political criticism of Israeli policies” on campus, putting “constitutionally protected speech and academic freedom” under “increasing threat.”
The Palestine Legal-CCR report, called “The Palestine Exception to Free Speech: A Movement Under Attack in the US” documents “the widespread and growing suppression of Palestinian human rights advocacy in the United States,” according to a news release issued jointly by Palestine Legal and CCR.
Both reports claim that activists for Israel have made false accusations of anti-Semitism and argue that off-campus pro-Israel groups are seeking to exert influence over grass-roots student activism.
StandWithUs: StandWithUs Condemns Cynical Attempts to Whitewash Racism, Stifle Student Activism In Reports Issued September 30, 2015
StandWithUs condemns two new reports released today by Palestine Legal and Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP). These reports cynically invoke free speech and academic freedom in an attempt to whitewash racism against Israelis and Jews on campus, silence the voices of Jewish students, and protect the narrow political interests of anti-Israel lobbying groups.
“These reports are shockingly hypocritical. They were not written to protect freedom of speech or academic inquiry. JVP and Palestine Legal are at the forefront of academic boycotts against Israelis, which have been overwhelmingly denounced as violations of free expression and academic freedom. They invoke these universal values when it suits their immoral agenda, but throw them out the window when it comes to protecting the rights of Israelis and Jews,” said Roz Rothstein, CEO of StandWithUs.
The real purpose of these reports is to stifle grassroots activism by Jewish students, which has grown dramatically in response to escalating incidents of anti-Jewish racism on campus (many of them stemming from anti-Israel activism). Last year Jewish students at three University of California (UC) schools introduced resolutions to their student governments endorsing the State Department Definition of Anti-Semitism. This outcry from students is the primary reason why administrators are finally considering concrete steps to curb widespread racism against Jews in the UC system.
JVP and Palestine Legal claim the State Department Definition undermines free speech and labels criticism of Israel as inherently anti-Semitic. If this were truly the case StandWithUs would also be opposed, but fortunately the definition does neither of these things. What it does do is recognize that demonization, delegitimization, and double standards against the world's only Jewish State (aka the 3 D's) are forms of bigotry.
Students for Justice in Palestine were anti-Semites — at a discussion about anti-Semitism.
SJP and JVP’s vehement opposition at the UC Regents meeting exposed the true intention of the anti-Israel movement on campus: commitment to a narrative in which Palestinian self-determination and Israeli self-determination cannot exist together. In this narrative, Palestinians and Israelis are not equal. One may be sacrificed at the expense of the other. This is what SJP’s chant of “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” means. Palestine must exist at the expense of the Jewish state. A definition of anti-Semitism that includes delegitimization of the Jewish homeland offends SJP’s sensibilities, because it means that the model of hatred that they have been using would be defined as intolerable.
I suppose I should thank Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace for their attendance. Their statements made the need for a sufficient “Statement of Principals Against Intolerance,” abundantly clear.
Student Leader in California Blasted for ‘Blatantly Antisemitic’ Remarks, Holocaust Denial
Sacramento region community college student trustee Cameron Weaver’s recent comments questioning the number of Jewish Holocaust victims are “blatantly antisemitic” and constitute “clear Holocaust denial,” said one of the heads of a nonprofit organization committed to combating antisemitism at institutions of higher learning in the U.S. on Wednesday.
“Weaver’s comments are a clear form of Holocaust denial,” said AMCHA Initiative co-founder Tammi Rossman-Benjamin, a University of California, Santa Cruz lecturer. “They are not only ‘troubling, misguided and abhorrent,’ as Los Rios Community College President Johnson has called them; they are blatantly antisemitic and should be identified as such by college administrators.”
Weaver raised eyebrows following a September 18 interview with the Current, the student newspaper of the American River College, a community college near Sacramento.
“Now I’m definitely not gonna go out and venture and say anything like, ‘Oh, the Holocaust didn’t happen.’ There are tons of people that make that argument. And from a really non-biased perspective, I completely disagree, but I also completely agree. What I mean when I say both is I don’t know the answer,” Weaver told the paper, according to the Sacramento Bee, which reported the incident on Tuesday.
US finds Kuwaiti airline discriminates against Israelis
In a challenge to boycotts of Israel, the U.S. government has found that Kuwait Airways unlawfully discriminated against a passenger traveling on an Israeli passport by refusing to sell him a ticket for a New York to London flight.
Eldad Gatt, an Israeli citizen, complained to the Department of Transportation that in 2013 he was unable to buy a ticket from John F. Kennedy Airport in New York to London Heathrow Airport through Kuwait Airways because the airline's online booking system prevented him from selecting Israel as his passport-issuing country.
The department investigated and initially rejected Gatt's discrimination complaint, according to a statement and letter provided by transportation officials. But when Gatt appealed the department's decision, the case was reopened and the department ultimately concluded that the airline had violated a different federal law than the one initially cited by Gatt.
"We considered Mr. Gatt's claim upon an alternative ground ... which holds that an 'air carrier or foreign air carrier may not subject a person, place, port, or type of traffic in foreign air transportation to unreasonable discrimination,'" Blane Workie, DOT's assistant general counsel for enforcement said in a letter to the airline.
‘Gross under-reporting’ of anti-Semitism plagues Europe, says EU agency
European nations lack systematic methods of collecting data on anti-Semitism, contributing to “gross underreporting of the nature and characteristics of anti-Semitic incidents that occur,” the European Union’s Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) asserted on Wednesday.
In a new report on data availability, the agency stated that “few EU member states operate official data collection mechanisms that record anti-Semitic incidents in any great detail” and this lack “limits the ability of policy makers” to deal effectively with growing hate crimes.
“Incidents that are not reported are also not investigated and prosecuted, allowing offenders to think that they can carry out such attacks with relative impunity,” the organization stated.
In late 2013, the FRA reported that a third of European Jews it had polled had admitted to refraining from wearing religious garb or Jewish symbols out of fear, with a further 23 percent avoiding attending Jewish events or going to Jewish venues.
While 66% reported anti-Semitism as having a negative affect on their lives, 77% did not bother reporting abuse or harassment.
Council of Europe cancels anti-circumcision measure after joint Jewish-Muslim effort
Two years of efforts by the Knesset to combat a resolution by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) recommending that countries ban ritual circumcision bore fruit Thursday, when it was reversed via a new resolution on religious freedoms.
The new resolution, which passed with 73 in favor and six opposed, recommends that PACE member states “seek reasonable accommodations with a view to guaranteeing equality that is effective, and not merely formal, in the right to freedom of religion.” It gives general guidelines to promote coexistence and fight hate speech, allowing religious communities to practice their faith, manage welfare institutions and express their opinions. The resolution refers specifically to Islamophobia, but not to anti-Semitism.
The council recommended that states require circumcisions to be performed by people trained to do so, in appropriate medical and health conditions, and that parents be informed of any medical risk to their child.
The resolution also addresses ritual slaughter, stating that PACE is not convinced it should be banned and recommending following the French or German model of protecting animals from unnecessary suffering while respecting religious freedom.
Microbrew Trend in Holy Land Turns Water to Hummus Beer
In an industrial zone among the hills of Galilee in northern Israel, a ponytailed sociologist with an intolerance for gluten explained what he was up to: beer made with chickpeas and dates.
"It's a very Middle Eastern food," 52-year-old Bryan Meadan said of his gluten-free beer made with chickpeas, familiar to most through hummus and falafel. "Local beer with local products."
The microbrew movement taking hold in many countries, showing drinkers that a pint can mean more than bland lager, has been embraced in Israel as well. A wide range of local producers now have a firm foothold in the market.
Meadan, who pursued his love of brewing by first doing it at home, has a particularly niche operation, producing beer that is both gluten-free and made with chickpeas, dates and buckwheat.
Six Israeli Universities Make World Top 500 List
Israeli universities rank among the top in the Middle East as well as worldwide, the 2015 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking poll revealed Monday.
Six of Israel's nine universities made THE's top 800 universities list.
Of those, Hebrew University of Jerusalem ranked highest at #178 worldwide, followed by Tel Aviv University (TAU) in the 201-250 range, Technion University in Haifa at the 301-350 range, and Bar-Ilan University among the 401-500 range.
Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Be'er Sheva and Haifa University rounded out the bottom of the list at the 501-600 range.
The universities which did not make the list include Ariel University, the Weizmann Institute of Science, and the Open University.
Mellanox to buy EZchip for $811 million
Israeli chip designer Mellanox Technologies Ltd has agreed to acquire network communications chip maker EZchip Semiconductor Ltd for $811 million as it expands its product portfolio for high-performance computing. The offer price of $25.50 per share represents a premium of 16 percent to EZchip's closing price on Tuesday.
Mellanox said the acquisition pursues its strategy to become the leading global supplier of interconnect solutions for software-defined data centres.
Mellanox, with a market value of $1.85 billion, makes InfiniBand products that enable databases, servers and computers to communicate. By buying EZchip, also based in Israel, the company adds Ethernet network processors to the list.
Israel's MediWound signs $112m. deal in US for burn treatment
Israel-based MediWound has signed a five-year, $112 million contract with the US authority that handles public health medical emergencies to further develop and buy the company's drug treatment for severe burns.
Investment group Clal Biotechnology, which has a 45 percent stake in MediWound, said in a statement that the deal with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority would raise preparedness for mass-casualty incidents.
The US body would also help MediWound get approval for its drug NexoBrid, a topical treatment that removes damaged tissue, from the Food and Drug Administration, Clal said.
Israeli Start-Up Snags USAF EOD Robot Award
After competing for more than two years with America's leading robot providers, an Israeli newcomer to the industry through its US subsidiary has snagged a $25 million US Air Force contract to provide its man-portable, stair-climbing, battle-tested system in support of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) missions.
In a contract announced by the Pentagon late last week and confirmed Sunday by Tel Aviv-based Roboteam, the firm's US subsidiary will provide up to 250 of its anti-IED Micro Tactical Ground Robots (MTGR) through 2022.
Established in late 2009 as a boutique provider of optronics, robotics and intuitive imaging, Roboteam beat out much larger and more established US firms Foster Miller, a subsidiary of British QinetiQ; and Bedford, Massachusetts-based iRobot.
Why are non-Jewish American celebs buying real estate in Israel?
From Madonna’s kabbalistic lyrics to Ashton Kutcher’s tech portfolio, celebrities find many reasons to invest in the Holy Land
Pop singer Mariah Carey and her billionaire Australian boyfriend, James Packer, aren’t known to be investors in Start Up Nation. But they’re pals with its first family, the Netanyahus. The Australian press reported in August that Packer was renovating a multimillion-dollar home he purchased last year next-door to the Netanyahu family’s private residence in the Israeli town of Caesarea.
The Israeli press has reported extensively on Sara Netanyahu’s troubles with the help, but she apparently got along famously with the pop diva when they met backstage after Carey’s August show in Israel. Carey shrugged off efforts to boycott Israel at the time, saying, “I do what I want to do … I don’t care what other people’s political agendas are.”
For his part, Packer attended Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s controversial speech to Congress opposing the Obama administration’s nuclear deal with Iran — at the prime minister’s invitation. (h/t Cliff)
Jerusalem's Liberators to Retrace Historic Six-Day Victory
Thursday's Jerusalem March will mark the 60th year the event has been held – making it the biggest and oldest parade in Israel.
To celebrate, parade organizers have recruited dozens of Israelis who were soldiers during the 1967 Six Day War, and participated in the liberation of Jordanian-occupied parts of the city.
This will mark the first time these warriors have gotten together for a march in the footsteps of their original victory.
At least 60,000 people from 35 countries are expected to be a part of the parade, either marching or watching.
The march, which lasts all day Thursday, has something for everyone: hikes along several trails in the Jerusalem forest for families who want to join the main body of the parade; marching bands, celebrities, balloons, and street theater for spectators who line the streets of the city, watching marchers; and a major happening in Sacher Park, where music, food, and fun will be the rule of the day.

From Yahoo News/PR Newswire:
Following an August 6 revelation that led Rael, spiritual leader of the Raelian Movement, to announce the end of protection for Israel by the Elohim, which he explained as "the advanced civilization that created life on Earth," Rael shared additional revelations in a statement released by the International Raelian Movement (IRM).

The new revelations concern what a spokesperson for the IRM called "the serious threat represented by current world leadership, especially the Israelis."

"Henceforth, under the title 'Elohimleaks,' I will immediately post the most recent information from the Elohim about what is happening on Earth in the most secret government services," Rael said on August 20. "The people governing this planet must know that the Elohim are watching us and know everything. No 'top secret' information or state secrets of any government can be hidden from them.

He said he had received the following information from the Elohim:

"To counter world sympathy for [residents of] Gaza and Palestinian suffering, some members of the Israeli government are thinking about creating a 'false flag' attack in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem in which a powerful bomb will kill thousands of Israeli citizens. They will then blame the event on 'a Palestinian terrorist.' This will be a psychiatric patient manipulated by the most recent mind control techniques, making him believe he is receiving direct orders from his god.
...

On August 22, Rael conveyed an additional revelation:

"Since Israel controls most of the water supply in the Palestinian territories, the Israel army is studying the possibility of poisoning this water with highly infectious diseases. Then, after an outbreak kills thousands, the Israeli army would be sent in to 'help the population' with intentionally ineffective medicines and vaccines. Thus Israel would have a good image as a 'savior' of the poor Palestinian people while creating a horrific genocide disguised as the outbreak of a known disease. In fact, it would be a manmade disease, but one that produces the same symptoms as known natural diseases. The media will therefore propagate the official lies without inquiry.
Rael has released other top secrets from Elohimleaks on his Facebook page and on the Elohimleaks website. For example:

ELOHIMLEAKS # 5 : IsraHell is preparing a false flag operation attacking US ships in the Persian Gulf with weapons who will simulate coming from Iran either from stealth airplanes, new stealth drones, or new stealth submarines or all in order to have the US attack Iran.

This is the Rael logo:

Vic Rosenthal's weekly column:

As a Zionist, I believe that a Jewish state is a necessary condition for the continued survival of the Jewish people. Our state faces some acute challenges, including the direct military threat from Iran and its proxies and the recent coalescence of a global anti-Jewish conspiracy of the Left. But there is another, chronic, struggle, and that is with the Arab Muslims of the land of Israel.

I am deliberately not distinguishing between the Arabs of Judea/Samaria, Jerusalem, or the rest of Israel, because the difference is only a matter of degree of hostility. In some cases the hostility is explicitly based on religion, insofar as it is unacceptable for a Muslim to live under non-Muslim (especially Jewish!) sovereignty. In others, it is nationalistic, either a broader Arab nationalism or the ‘Palestinian’ version; and finally there is simple ethnic/cultural rejection of the Other. It wouldn’t be wrong to add that there is an element of envy and greed to take for themselves the fruits of development that have come to the Jewish population as a result of their enterprise.

Be that as it may, the violent behavior of Arabs toward Jews in the land of Israel has a long, ugly history, including a murderous pogrom in Tzfat in 1834, riots in Mandate Palestine in 1921, 1929 (including the Hevron massacre) and 1936, the intifadas, and of course the long history of terrorism – both the ‘official’ variety of the PLO and Hamas and the ‘personal’ kind – here.

Recently, the ‘Oslo Generation’ of Arabs influenced by Palestinian Authority media and the educational system established by Yasser Arafat have been engaging in activities ranging from harassment to assault to murder of Jews. Social media have taken the place of inflammatory speeches by the Mufti, to great effect, but the idea is the same. They’ll make our lives hell, they think, and we’ll leave.

Ze’ev Jabotinsky recognized early that the Arabs will not reconcile with a Jewish state unless there is absolutely no alternative. In his 1923 essay “The Iron Wall,” he wrote,

To imagine, as our Arabophiles do, that they will voluntarily consent to the realisation of Zionism in return for the moral and material conveniences which the Jewish colonist brings with him, is a childish notion, which has at bottom a kind of contempt for the Arab people; it means that they despise the Arab race, which they regard as a corrupt mob that can be bought and sold, and are willing to give up their fatherland for a good railway system. …
As long as the Arabs feel that there is the least hope of getting rid of us, they will refuse to give up this hope in return for either kind words or for bread and butter, because they are not a rabble, but a living people. And when a living people yields in matters of such a vital character it is only when there is no longer any hope of getting rid of us, because they can make no breach in the iron wall. Not till then will they drop their extremist leaders whose watchword is "Never!"
As in so many things, Jabotinsky was prescient.

What is the solution? Is there one?

Historically, a conqueror either killed a conquered people, enslaved them, or expelled them. The first and second options are morally unacceptable, and the third impractical and probably politically impossible (although it’s certain that if the Arabs had won any of our wars they would have implemented a combination of all three).

Meir Kahane suggested (Uncomfortable Questions for Comfortable Jews, 1987) that those Arabs who would agree to “accept the Jewish state of Israel as the exclusive state of the Jewish people” could stay as resident aliens with civil but not political rights, while others could accept compensation and leave or – if they refused – be expelled. This is a somewhat kinder solution than killing or slavery, but was still considered beyond the pale.

And that is unfortunate, because – as Jabotinsky made clear – there is no voluntary solution possible. The more we try to conciliate the Arabs and compromise in order to try to satisfy their national aspirations, the more we display to them our weakness and inability to hold on to the land that we’ve taken possession of.

Today, anti-Zionist Arabs are confident that they are winning. We continue to send them the message that for whatever reason, we are weak, we are paralyzed and can’t do anything to stop them. The only way to stop Arab terrorism and harassment is to change the rules, to turn things upside down. To create an iron wall. To make the actions of the terrorists – the big ones and the little ones – themselves negate the Palestinian project.

So what do I suggest?

First, take away the oxygen of publicity. Israel is full of foreign ‘journalists’ with agendas, international activists, operatives of hostile NGOs, and so forth. Get rid of them, and don’t let them back in. Declare flash points like Nabi Saleh military zones and arrest ‘Palestinian’ and left-wing journalists when they enter them. Take away press credentials from the provocateurs. Don’t allow foreign sources to bankroll Israeli subversives. If Palestinian radio and TV are guilty of incitement, take them off the air. Why should Israel be as much of an open society as the US is when the threats facing it are so much greater?

Second, whenever possible, expel troublemakers. We can’t implement Kahane’s solution in general, but we could for specific cases, like the Tamimi family. Bassem Tamimi was born in Judea/Samaria in 1967 prior to Israel’s conquest of the area, and may have Jordanian citizenship. If so, he should be deported. Israeli Arabs involved in terrorism could have their citizenship revoked and be sent to Gaza or the Palestinian Authority. Those actively working to destroy the state should forfeit the privilege of living in it. And while we are talking about troublemakers, throw European ‘charities’ out of the territories.

Third, make terrorism unproductive. New construction in Judea and Samaria should be undertaken in honor of the victims of terrorist atrocities. The homes of terrorists should be destroyed. Israeli Arabs whose family members are caught throwing rocks should be barred from receiving National Insurance payments, as MK Miri Regev has suggested. Symbolic terrorism, like the vandalism at the Mount of Olives cemetery, should be taken seriously and the perpetrators punished. Needless to say, there should never, ever, be a prisoner release for political reasons or in exchange for hostages.

Fourth, although we shouldn't exclude all Arab residents of the state from participating in politics as Kahane wanted to do, there should be no anti-Zionists in the Knesset. What is the message sent by the presence of Haneen Zoabi, when she has clearly violated the Basic Law which excludes anyone who negates the existence of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state? Ask the Supreme Court, which voided a law passed to expel her on just these grounds.

For Jabotinsky, Zionism was a given, “moral and just.”  Before we can demonstrate to the Arabs that the land of Israel belongs to us, we need to believe it ourselves. Unfortunately the legal establishment in Israel, especially the Supreme Court, seems to have de facto accepted the idea that Israel is already a ‘state of its citizens’ and not primarily a Jewish state. It’s quite likely that most of my suggestions above would run afoul of the Court. A new Basic Law declaring that the state belongs to the Jewish people and exists for their benefit could make it easier to fight back.

The Arab terrorists justify their violence by asserting that the land is theirs and they are “resisting occupation” when they throw their firebombs (they often falsely claim that such “resistance” is legitimate under international law). International opposition to Israel is based on the idea that we are “illegal occupiers.” So why doesn’t the government adopt the Levy report, which presents a juridical opinion that Israel’s presence in Judea and Samaria is not a belligerent occupation, and Jewish communities there are legal? Why isn’t there an official, well-funded information campaign underway to present Israel’s legal and moral position to the world? And why isn’t there a similar campaign to delegitimize the false ‘Palestinian narrative’?

To answer the question I posed earlier, yes there is a solution to Arab hostility. It is to understand that we will never make Zionists out of most of the Arabs, but we can give them a choice: they can be good neighbors despite their animosity – or they can leave.

From Ian:

Mordechai Kedar: It's Jihad, Stupid
Abbas' UN speech is part of a master plan and it's name is Jihad. The doctrine of Islamic Jihad mandates the inclusion of an element of deceit, and Mahmoud Abbas is a master of deception.
Shimon Peres, Yossi Beilin, Alon Liel and the other hallucinatory figures tried to convince us that there is a difference between the bad Jihadists of Hamas and the "charming", "pleasant' PLO ones, those true lovers of peace and tranquility, those whose arch-Jihadist leader Yasser Arafat was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. Even Abbas' incendiary UN speech will not change their minds.
Theirs was an unfounded and utterly delusionary point of view, but it cost the lives of over 1500 very real Israelis, because the only difference between Hamas and the PLO is that Hamas declares openly that it is a Jihad fighter organization, while some PLO members hide the fact that they are as well. Some of them – those in the el-Aksa Brigades - don't bother to hide it and their president, Mahmoud Abbas, finances them. Those of us who are battle-weary attempt to kosher the Jihadist PLO vermin just as they attempted to gloss over Haj Amin al Husseini's part in the Holocaust of European Jewry.
Let's wake up and tell the truth – to ourselves and to the world. Only the truth can help us understand reality and deal with it properly. The truth is that we are a Jihad target for Hamas and the PLO, each one using its own methods of trying to dissemble and pull the wool over our eyes, and if we fall – thanks in part to the European money pouring into the arteries of the PA Jihad – Europe will be the next objective of that very same Jihad, which is already in the midst of exporting itself to Europe by means of massive Muslim immigration to the aging and deteriorating continent.
This is a Jihad. Our enemies, no matter what else they are, are all Jihad fighters. We have to adapt our way of talking about this situation and deal with it accordingly. The faster we do so the better it will be for us and the world.
Obama brushed off Reid's plea on Palestinian state
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid on two different occasions this year went to White House chief of staff Denis McDonough seeking a public commitment from President Barack Obama that he would veto any U.N. resolution calling for an independent Palestinian state.
Both times, Obama did nothing.
The requests from Reid came as he was trying to line up Democratic support for the Iran nuclear agreement. If Obama explicitly sided with Israel against the possible U.N. resolution, Reid’s thinking went, it would give nervous Democrats cover to back the Iran deal, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vocally protested.
The repeated requests by Reid and Obama’s unwillingness to make a statement on the issue — confirmed by White House officials and Senate aides — highlights how wide the gulf between the Obama administration and Israeli government has become. It unfolded in the context of a personal relationship between Obama and Netanyahu that’s become highly toxic, poisoning U.S.-Israeli relations more widely.
The issue gained new significance Wednesday as Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas declared that his government was no longer bound by any agreements with Israel, including the Oslo peace accords and other settlements related to a possible two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
JPost Editorial: The Russia-Iran link
The fact that Iran is finally off the American/Western nuclear hook and is flushed with cash made this unabashed partnership with Moscow possible. Russia, let’s not forget, is Iran’s primary weapons purveyor and builder of its nuclear facilities. It made sure that Iran would be treated indulgently during the recent nuclear negotiations.
In all, Iran is emboldened as never before and Putin is heartened by Obama’s phlegmatic response. One superpower – America – appears in retreat, whereas a reawakening Russia regains prominence.
The itineraries of a significant number of Middle Eastern leaders include Moscow – Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu is only one. Also traveling to Moscow are potentates from such unlikely ally countries as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE, Morocco, Jordan, and of course Egypt, which was unaccountably jilted by Obama.
Putin even plans a visit to Riyadh. All this speaks volumes.
The danger to Israel isn’t only that Iran can now openly become a key player in Syria, but that aggression will be indirectly funded by the resources the US has consented to release and by the vast business opportunities it steers to Tehran. Those funds, combined with unimpeded Russian ambition will thus not only help ensure Assad’s survival, but will also allow the further arming of Hezbollah and Hamas.
Netanyahu’s conversation with Putin last week dealt not only with military coordination regarding Russia’s actions in Syria, but also with Israel’s warning that it cannot allow a massively reinforced Hezbollah menace on its doorstep in Lebanon.

Abbas ‘does not seek a peace settlement,’ Netanyahu charges
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini Wednesday evening in New York to discuss the stalled peace process between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
At the meeting, Netanyahu “expressed his unhappiness with the European Union’s trend to mark products from [West Bank] settlements,” a Prime Minister’s Office statement said early Thursday.
“The prime minister said and explained that this development symbolizes for many Israelis dark days in Europe and is poorly received in domestic Israeli public opinion,” the statement added.
Although the meeting was not included on Netanyahu’s public schedule, the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the meeting shortly before the sit-down started and said that it was planned in advance.
Netanyahu poised to 'attack Abbas' lies' in UN speech
Speaking with Israeli reporters on Wednesday, the prime minister revealed little of what the content of the speech will be. The main topics are expected to be recent developments in Syria and the nuclear deal that world powers and Iran reached in July.
"In Syria, Iran is being presented as part of the solution, when in fact it itself is the problem," Netanyahu said on Wednesday. "Iran's support for [Syrian President Bashar] Assad is enormous. There would be no Assad regime today without Iran. The Iranian commander in Syria is Ghasem Soleimani [the head of the Revolutionary Guard's elite Quds Force] and his deputy is Hassan Nasrallah [the leader of Hezbollah]. They are working to keep Assad in power. Recently, they have been reinforced by [Russian President Vladimir] Putin. The problem in the Middle East now is Iran's massive onslaught in the region.
"In my U.N. speech, I will put these things on the table. In the speeches I've heard so far at the U.N., there has been no real reference to two issues: Iran's massive aggression in the Middle East and its increasing aggressiveness toward Israel."
An official close to Netanyahu said on Wednesday, "The prime minister will deliver a resolute speech in which he will attack the campaign of incitement and lies being conducted by [Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud] Abbas. He will also attack international hypocrisy and clarify what Israel's policies are regarding the aftermath of the Iran nuclear deal and the developing situation in Syria."
Quartet urges regional outreach to spur peace talks
Representatives of the Middle East Quartet signaled Wednesday evening that they would step up their efforts to facilitate a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict after a day in which discussion of the longstanding dispute took center stage at the United Nations.
Following a Wednesday afternoon meeting at UN Headquarters, members of the Quartet issued a lengthy statement in which they stressed the importance of the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative and a regional framework for working toward a comprehensive two-state solution.
In the statement, the Quartet said that envoys “will engage directly with the parties in order to explore concrete actions both sides can take to demonstrate their genuine commitment to pursuing a two-state solution, including encouraging efforts to agree on significant steps, consistent with prior agreements that benefit Israelis and Palestinians.”
UN Middle East Quartet “deeply concerned” over Temple Mount violence
Representatives of the United Nations Middle East Quartet expresses their “deep concern” on Wednesday over the recent violence on Temple Mount in Jerusalem.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, US Secretary of State John Kerry and European Union Representative Federica Mogherini called upon all parties to “exercise restraint, refrain from provocative actions and rhetoric, and preserve unchanged the status quo at the holy sites in both word and practice.”
The Quartet members, involved in mediating the Israeli Palestinian conflict reiterated its commitment to “achieving a two-state outcome that meets Israeli security needs and Palestinian aspirations for statehood and sovereignty, ends the occupation that began in 1967, and resolves all permanent status issues in order to end the conflict.”
Will Obama Call Abbas’s UN Bluff?
Of course, Abbas’s obituary for Oslo is 15 years too late. The accords collapsed in 2000 when then Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and President Bill Clinton offered Arafat an independent state in almost all of the West Bank, a share of Jerusalem, and Gaza. Arafat turned them down and launched a terrorist war of attrition known as the second intifada. He turned down another such deal in 2001, and Abbas fled the negotiating table in 2008 when Ehud Olmert made an even more generous offer in 2008. In 2014, Abbas blew up another round of negotiations when he trashed Oslo again by seeking to go around the U.S.-led talks by asking the UN to recognize Palestinian independence.
So there’s nothing actually new here except for the incendiary nature of Abbas’s rhetoric. Nor did Abbas mention that fact that his Fatah Party hasn’t governed part of the putative Palestinian state in eight years. Israel withdrew completely from Gaza in 2005 as part of Ariel Sharon’s disastrous peace experiment. Hamas seized control of the strip in 2007 and has since used it as a terrorist launching pad for rocket and cross-border attacks. Those wondering what an independent Palestinian state would look like in practice need only ponder the reality of Gaza which operates as such a sovereign entity in all but name, albeit under the rule of an Islamist terror group backed by Iran. If the Palestinian goal was just statehood, they could have had it a long time ago. Instead, they have stuck to their refusal to recognizing the legitimacy of a Jewish state no matter where its borders are drawn because to do so would mean ending a conflict they intend to continue so long as Israel exists.
Nor do the other alleged Israeli outrages detailed in Abbas’ speech amount to a reason for the international community to grant Abbas’s wishes.
Contrary to his assertions, Israel has not altered the status quo on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. To the contrary, it is the Palestinians who are seeking to exclude Jewish visitors to the holiest site in Judaism. Abbas has cynically sought to exploit this issue in order to whip up Palestinian resentment of Jews as part of his failing effort to compete with Hamas. Though he is doomed to always fall short in a contest based on which group is more hostile to Israel, he has nonetheless not hesitated to endorse terrorism and to encourage the upsurge in small-scale attacks on Jews in Jerusalem and the West Bank.
Mahmoud Abbas – You Are Not That Important
The Holocaust-denier who runs the confederacy of terrorists known as the PA (Palestinian Authority) tried a new trick. He is scrapping his end of the Oslo Accords -- as if anybody around here really gives a damn. But he needs the attention, poor guy.
Whatever works to get him a headline – he’s in.
He came to America just when football season is getting heated and Americans are in the mood for not much else – maybe the baseball playoffs.
So nobody really cared why he came here and the only headline he got was at The New York Times, naturally.
Nobody else gave him the coverage he craves.
Nobody cares, Mahmoud.
Palestinians raise flag at UN's New York headquarters for first time
Hundreds of UN officials and members of international delegations gathered on Wednesday afternoon to witness the raising of the Palestinian flag at the United Nations Headquarters for the first time in history.
“This is a day of pride for Palestinians around the world,” UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said at the ceremony. “It is a day of hope.”
The flag was raised moments after Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s controversial speech to the General Assembly, in which he declared that the PA was no longer bound by the Oslo Accords with Israel.
People in the cheering crowd held their cellphones as high as possible to catch a picture of Abbas, Ban Ki-moon and General Assembly President Mogens Lykketoft.
Wednesday’s ceremony was the result of a vote held at the UN earlier this month, in which 119 states voted in favor of raising the flag and only 8, including Israel and the United States, voted against it.
ADL: Abbas Speech a 'Blatant Repudiation of Peace'
In his statement, Jonathan A. Greenblatt accused Abbas of a "speech rife with outright lies and incitement about shared holy sites in Jerusalem, historical half-truths on the conflict, and a pro forma litany of grievances and accusations."
"Abbas dramatically announced the end of negotiations, reconciliation and peace with Israel, while, at the same time demanding international action to bring about Palestinian statehood," Greenblatt charged.
"Long on complaints, short on practical steps, Abbas once again showed the international community that the Palestinians remain rooted to a strategy of symbolism, obfuscation and excuses which will do little to bring benefits to average Palestinians or bring closer their goal of statehood."
"How sad for the Palestinian people that their leadership has spent decades engaged in a strategy so damaging to their legitimate aspirations," Greenblatt added.
Calling on the international community, Greenblatt demanded that instead of "applauding fiery speeches" they must "clearly convey" to Abbas and other Palestinian leaders that "denial of the Jewish connection to the holy sites in Jerusalem is anti-Semitic and must stop."
Khaled Abu Toameh: Abbas’s empty bombshell
In his speech, Abbas did not abandon the peace process with Israel, as some have mistakenly argued.
He did not dissolve the Palestinian Authority and “return the keys” to Israel. He did not even go as far as suspending security coordination with Israel – without which the Palestinian Authority would not be able to survive in the West Bank.
In short, Abbas did not close all doors with Israel. He put the pistol on the table instead of firing it. His message to Israel and the rest of the world: Next time I won’t hesitate to use the pistol if I don’t get everything I want.
For now, it’s clear that Abbas’s speech is not going to change anything on the ground. Abbas is going nowhere, and so is the Palestinian Authority.
Apart from the harmless bombshell, Abbas’s speech did not include anything new. In fact, this was the same charge sheet he and his senior aides have been bringing forward against Israel for the past few years.
His fiery anti-Israel rhetoric, especially concerning the holy sites in Jerusalem and settler violence, are mostly intended for internal consumption. The charges he made against Israel are designed to appease his critics and other Palestinians who are skeptical of his intentions and policies.
Mahmoud Abbas Has a Nightmare Vision
Without the PA as a go-between the Palestinians and the Israeli military, Abbas reasons, the world will be reminded of the stark brutality of Israel’s “occupation,” as well as its universal rejection by the Palestinians. His strategy is to undermine Israel through legal means—joining international treaties and organizations, charging Israel with war crimes at the International Criminal Court—and “peaceful” protest. Like Arafat in 1974, Abbas wants us to believe that he is extending the olive branch, not pointing the gun.
The problem is that Abbas has little control over how events pan out. Many Palestinians resent him and his corrupt, nepotistic rule, while quite a few openly detest him. As Abbas weakens in the West Bank, Hamas—with whom he fought a bitter civil war in Gaza in 2007—becomes strengthened. And that’s not to mention the terrorist groups in the wider region, like Islamic State and Al-Qaeda in Iraq and Syria, who are salivating at the prospect of the West Bank turning into Afghanistan. Nor can we ignore the machinations of the Iranian regime, which now exercises supreme control in Syria and Iraq.
Ironically, the first victims of a collapse along these lines would be Abbas and his regime, as well as the growing Palestinian middle class in Ramallah and its environs. They may not like Israel’s presence, but how many Palestinians in Jenin, say, would swap places with their brethren in Syria currently facing Assad’s barrel bombs? By reneging on his agreements with Israel, Abbas has brought this regional nightmare one step closer to the territory whose interests he claims to represent.
In the final analysis, there is no olive branch here, just a gun. And this time, it’s loaded.
PA Leaders Demand Abbas 'Follow Through' and Dump Oslo
However, top PA officials were almost unanimous in their enthusiasm for Abbas's comments with numerous PA officials reportedly having contacted Abbas, demanding to know how he plans to actualize his threat.
An editorial in the Al-Quds newspaper Thursday said that Abbas's speech was “historic,” and now he had to follow through on it. Other PA newspapers also ran “man in the street” articles, demanding action as a follow-up to the comments.
Abbas did not specify in his UN speech how he plans to “disengage” from Israel. According to Israeli officials, Abbas is dependent on numerous forms of Israeli assistance, not the least of which is protecting him from Hamas.
Israel Radio noted that although Abbas's speech got top billing in PA media, it was virtually ignored in many of the major newspapers in the Arab world, including the London-based publications Al-Hayat and Al-Sharq al-Awsat, both considered reliable vehicles to gauge the opinion of the wealthy and dominant Arab and Gulf governments.
IsraellyCool: Abbas’ Non “Bombshell” And Rudoren’s “Oslo Accords For Dummies”
Jodi Rudoren’s short, simple analysis of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s non-bombshell at the UN on Wednesday could have been called “Oslo Accords for Dummies” – as that’s what anyone who relies on her analysis at this point would have to be.
At first glance the piece seems to strive for neutrality, explaining that “each side has frequently accused the other of violations [of the accords] over the years.” True to the Times’s pattern, though, the lies here are lies of omission. Pretty glaring omissions.
The first such omission is that the so-called peace process that she says was laid out in the Oslo accords did, in fact, lead to an offer to the Palestinian Arabs of statehood in all of Gaza and over 90% of the West Bank, with a division of Jerusalem, in 2000 at Camp David. This offer was rejected by Arafat, who intentionally started the second intifada in response. Jonathan Tobin correctly pointed out it was that, and not Abbas’s speech today, that was really the end of Oslo.
Abbas UN Speech Shows Peace Process a 'Sucker's Game' for Israel
Mahmoud Abbas's incendiary speech at the UN Wednesday night has been attacked as incitement by some Israeli officials, and derided as "more empty threats" by others.
But one international legal expert says it's more an illustration of the way in which Israel has allowed itself to be taken for a ride in successive rounds of negotiations and one-sided deals with the Palestinians.
During the speech Abbas dropped his much-hyped "bombshell" announcement: that the Palestinian Authority no longer considers itself bound by the 1994 Oslo Accords, and would henceforth pursue its claims unilaterally via all possible avenues.
"It shows the suckers game of peace process for Israel," said Professor Eugene Kontorovich.
"From Oslo, the Palestinians got their own government, territory under their control, a place at the UN, legitimacy - and then unilaterally cancelled all their obligations without giving Israel anything," he noted.
Indeed, it was only due to the Oslo Accords that Abbas's Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) was taken off the international terrorist blacklist and recognized as a legitimate political entity.
Deputy FM: Palestinians need attitude adjustment before cash
Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely told a United Nations donor conference that economic efforts aimed at Mideast peace were useless without the Palestinians changing their attitudes toward Israel.
Hotovely also used the high-level forum to accuse Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas of hypocritically exploiting recent violent clashes on the Temple Mount to tar Israel, when he himself is guilty of incitement.
“The conflict will be resolved when the basic values of the Palestinian Authority change,” Hotovely said at the annual donor-pledging conference, when nations commit to funding UN projects. “As long as Palestinian children dream of becoming engineers ‘to blow up Jews,’ none of these economic efforts will achieve their goal.”
The deputy foreign minister was in New York to take part in the UN General Assembly meeting and met with US Secretary of State John Kerry, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, European Union foreign ministers and ministers from Jordan and Norway, her office said.
“The world is witnessing a broad expansion of radical Islam. Israel has always reflected in its approach a commitment to international law alongside an unwavering campaign against terror,” Hotovely added.
Incitement is a weapon
The recent unrest in Jerusalem is characterized by the enormous number of minors acting alongside adults. The parents of those youngsters don't have to make any effort to persuade them to throw rocks and Molotov cocktails at Jews, Jewish cars, or Jewish homes. From the time they are in nursery school, Palestinian children learn to hate Jews and aspire to eliminate them and their state.
Here is an excerpt from one of the songs taught in Palestinian Authority kindergartens: "You [Jews] are destined for humiliation and suffering. Sons of Zion, you are the worst creatures, barbaric monkeys, pathetic pigs. ... Jerusalem will vomit you up because you are impure and it is pure; it is clean and you are dirty. ... I'm not afraid of your barbarism as long as my heart is my Quran and my city, as long as I hold weapons and rocks in my hand."
PA schools are often named after despicable murderers. No fewer than three schools are named after Dalal Mughrabi, the Fatah terrorist who took part in the 1978 attack on an Israeli bus that killed 38 Israeli civilians, including 12 children, and left 71 wounded. And now Palestinian newspapers are praising the "brave" Palestinian children and running cartoons showing parents supporting their children who throw rocks. It need not be said that Israel has been erased from the maps used in PA textbooks.
IDF Blog: A Raging Hotbed of Terror on the Sinai Border
Since 2011, the Sinai Peninsula has transformed into a hotbed for terrorist organizations such as the Wilayat Sina (Province of Sinai), who have pledged their allegiance to ISIS. Inevitably, these groups may one day turn their attention to Israel’s southern border.
Since the Egyptian Revolution in 2011, there has been an unprecedented growth in terror groups operating from the Sinai. These insurgencies have taken advantage of the chaotic situation that ensued in the area, which led to waves of violence that has spilled over into Israel’s southern border.
In response to the rejuvenation of terrorist activity from the Sinai Peninsula and the many infiltrations in 2011, the IDF initiated the “Hourglass Project”, and in 2013, completed the construction of a large fence that stretches throughout the Israeli border with the Egyptian Sinai. The fence is equipped with 24-hour surveillance cameras and is patrolled by multiple forces, including the Carcal Battalion, which has secured the border with Egypt for the past 10 years.
This hasn’t stopped a few terrorist groups from expanding and establishing their headquarters in the Sinai Peninsula, where they operate today.
Lebanese army claims it found Israeli spying device
Soldiers from the Lebanese Armed Forces claimed Wednesday to have found a rock concealing an Israeli spying device in the south of the country.
The army said it found the device in the town of Bani Hayyan, around four kilometers from the border with Israel.
According to a report in al-Manar, a Hezbollah-affiliated website, the device included a camera and four batteries.
In a short video clip released by the Lebanese Army, a shiny surface appearing to be the lens of a camera can be seen through an opening in what appears to be an artificial rock made out of fiberglass.
Islamic State gains ground near Golan as moderate rebels wither
As Russian airstrikes on Wednesday and Thursday targeted rebel groups in central and northern Syria, many of them reportedly unaffiliated with the Islamic State, Islamist groups in the south are growing stronger, with IS fighters now operating openly near the border with Israel, an opposition spokesman said on Thursday.
Speaking to The Times of Israel from Jordan, where he serves from within the joint Western-Arab command center in Amman known as MOC, the spokesman of Free Syrian Army units active in the provinces of Daraa and Quneitra said that an estimated 500-700 Islamic State fighters are currently active in the towns of Jamlah and Ash-Shajarah, adjacent to the Israeli border in the southern Golan Heights.
Further east, moderate forces are attempting to push back IS fighters trying to occupy al-Lajjah, an area north of the town of Basr al-Harir.
Western training for moderate rebel fighters in Jordan has not taken place in five months, he added, and no ammunition or weaponry has reached the Free Syrian Army on the southern front in three months.
Seven Israeli Arabs indicted for creating ISIS cell to attack Israel
From prison, Ahmad allegedly assisted the trio in purchasing the illegal weapons they had planned to use to carry out their attacks.
The terror cell had planned to carry out a shooting attack on a military base in the nearby Migdal Haemek area, the Shin Bet said. To prepare for the attack, Sharif, Mahajna and Jazalah made several trips to the base to collect information on patrols and security cameras.
The three Arab-Israelis also planned on throwing Molotov cocktails on police stations and vehicles in Migdal Haemek and Nazareth; to this end, they also cased out the area in preparation for the attack.
And finally, the Shin Bet claimed, they planned on firebombing stores in the area that sell alcohol, as consuming alcohol is forbidden under Muslim law.
Border policewoman hailed as hero after subduing Arab rioter
Israeli border policewoman Second Sgt. Karen Feldman, 20, subdued an Arab resident of east Jerusalem on Wednesday after he attacked a security guard in Jerusalem's Old City with tear gas.
She acted immediately upon seeing the attacker and was even able to thwart attempts made by others nearby to free him from her grasp.
"I am not scared," she said. "It's the ones who are breaking the law who should be afraid of us."
Feldman recalled the incident, saying, "I saw the young man spraying tear gas at the security guard and trying to escape with the help of the locals. We started to chase him and managed to stop him.
Six-month-old baby lightly wounded by stones near Tekoa in West Bank
An infant was lightly hurt when her family car was hit by rock-throwers in the West Bank on Thursday driving home from a family outing.
Judea and Samaria police said the family was driving next to Tekoa when they were attacked, and that the family – a mother, her 6-months-old infant, and two other children aged 3 and 6 – managed to make their way to a nearby IDF post, where soldiers launched a search for the assailants.
A couple hours later the Judea and Samaria police said that they had arrested a suspect in the attack – a 15-year-old who they said confessed to the crime. Police said the youth was walking home from school with friends when they decided to head out to a nearby road and throw rocks at Israeli cars. They added that there are other suspects that they are still looking for.
Two cars were attacked by the rock-throwers, causing damage to both and leaving the mother with a light injury to one of her legs.
Arabs Commemorate Intifada-Inspired Rioting With School Strike
While Jewish children have off from school this week because of the Sukkot holiday, students in the Arab sector are supposed to be in class.
However, children in Sakhnin did not show up for their studies on Thursday – in commemoration of the deaths of 13 Israeli Arabs during the second intifada.
In 2000, as Arabs in Judea and Samaria went on an unprecedented terror campaign against Israelis, residents of Sakhnin and other Arab towns and villages in northern Israel took to the streets to protest efforts by Israeli security forces to put down the riots and keep Israelis safe.
Residents blocked highways and threw stones at Israeli drivers, forcing the closure of major highways in northern Israel. Police attempted to restore order, and found themselves the victims of rock-throwing and firebomb attacks.
In response, police fired at rioters, killing 13 of them. One Israeli civilian, Bachor Jann, from Rishon LeZion, was killed when Arab rioters threw a boulder at his vehicle near the Arab village of Jisr az-Zarqa. Rioting also spilled into Jewish neighborhoods in Upper Nazareth, Petach Tikvah, and Bat Yam.
Palestinian Arrested as He Tries to Stab Soldier
A Palestinian Arab on Wednesday night tried to stab an IDF soldier who was stationed at a checkpoint near the Shomron community of Einav.
The Arab was detained by the soldiers as he arrived at the checkpoint, when he pulled a knife and tried to stab one of them.
The fighters were able to neutralize the attacker and he was injured. After treatment at the scene he was taken for further questioning.
The soldier was lightly injured.
The incident comes hours after two IDF troops were struck by rocks and wounded at Beit Ummar, near Hevron.
One officer was in moderate condition and the second’s condition is unknown. Both were taken to a Jerusalem hospital.
Israeli Emergency Responders Attacked By the Very Palestinians They Try to Help
This past year, Israel’s Fire and Rescue Authority and ambulance service Magen David Adom have often been attacked by Palestinian terrorists when responding to incidents in Judea-Samaria, Jerusalem and other areas.
Ironically, these incidents occur while Israeli emergency services are in the process of aiding Palestinians.
Just last week, on September 21, an Israeli firefighter’s support vehicle was attacked by rock-throwers on Route 443 near Jerusalem. The attack caused extensive damage, and the firefighter had to be rescued.
On Saturday night, September 19, four squads of Israel’s Fire and Rescue Authority were called in to extinguish a large-scale fire on the outskirts of Jerusalem, near the Palestinian village of Anata. While battling the flames, the firefighters were attacked by local Palestinian men, who threw Molotov cocktails at them — which exacerbated the fire and increased the risk to firefighters.
Turkey court slaps secrecy order on ‘arms to Syria’ trial
Four former senior Turkish prosecutors and an ex-military commander went on trial Thursday over the interception last year of an alleged consignment of arms bound for Syria, with the court immediately imposing a secrecy order on the hugely controversial case.
The case goes to the heart of claims — repeated on occasion by the West but denied by Turkey — that Ankara has worked far too closely with Islamist rebels in the hope of ousting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
The five, who were arrested earlier this year, are charged with seeking to overthrow the government and revealing state security information. They could face life in prison if found guilty.
The trial opened at a criminal court within Turkey’s Supreme Court in Ankara under heavy security, with the judge immediately imposing the secrecy order, the official Anatolia news agency reported.
MEMRI: The Islamic State's Frantic Response To The Wave Of Refugees Fleeing Syria
In response to the refugee crisis involving the migration to Europe of hundreds of thousands of people from Syria and other Middle Eastern countries, the Islamic State (ISIS) has launched a large-scale media campaign urging Muslims not to seek refuge in the West but rather to come to the territories under its control. As part of the campaign, ISIS has released 13 videos and has published numerous articles and pamphlets; additionally, its activists have flooded social media with this message, including with a Twitter campaign under the hashtag "Refugees – to where?"[1]
The massive scale of the media output on this issue shows that ISIS sees the Syrian wave of migration to Europe as an acute challenge. ISIS leaders see this challenge is twofold: It undermines ISIS propaganda that promotes ISIS as a burgeoning state to which Muslims are flocking, and it constitutes an actual demographic problem.
ISIS's migration campaign has revolved largely around a negative message, namely condemnation of those who choose to flee to the West and an assertion that migration to Europe and the West will only bring the refugees further misfortune. Moreover, ISIS and its supporters stress all Muslims' obligation to perform hijra (migration) to the Islamic State, and the view that Muslims who live elsewhere are neglecting their religious duties.
Japan Pledges More Money for Migrant Crisis than Saudi Arabia
In his remarks before the U.N. General Assembly, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced a large increase in aid money for Middle Eastern refugees, but notably declined to allow migrants to resettle in Japan.
The New York Times describes Abe’s offer as $810 million for “assistance to refugees and internally displaced people in Syria and Iraq this year, about triple the amount from last year.” Japan is said to be the second-largest donor to the United Nations refugee relief agency, behind the United States.
Additionally, he said Japan would provide $750 million “to help build peace and fully ensure this peace across the Middle East and Africa” through infrastructure and development projects, such as water delivery systems in Iraq.
This would be substantially more than the $700 million in humanitarian aid Saudi Arabia claims to provide for those refugees. The Saudis have also been criticized for refusing to allow Syrian refugees to resettle on their land, packing them off to Europe instead. The standard Saudi response is to assert that they allow some 100,000 Syrians to reside in the Kingdom temporarily but more-or-less indefinitely with work and residency permits.
Saudis win UNHRC contest over Yemen resolution
Saudi Arabia has managed to block a Dutch-led draft resolution at the UN Human Rights Council that would have dispatched the UN rights office to investigate possible war crimes by the Saudis, Iran-backed Houthis and others, in the conflict in Yemen.
Instead, Saudi Arabia has sponsored its own softball resolution which classifies the entire war — with more than 2,300 killed — as a matter of “technical cooperation.”
“For those asking why it matters when Saudi Arabia wins a seat on the UN Human Rights Council, or when the misogynistic monarchy is chosen to head one of the council’s key committees, now we know,” said Hillel Neuer, UN Watch executive director. “The fundamentalist regime has just used its power on the UN council to give itself a free pass, and the people of Yemen will continue paying the price.”
For more on the U.S. position, informed by its direct support for the Saudi-led bombing attacks in Yemen, see this AP report.
'Secret Deal' On Vote Trading Secured UK And Saudi Arabia's UN Human Rights Council Places
Leaked diplomatic cables show Britain and Saudi Arabia, one of the world’s worst human rights violators, brokered a secret vote-trading deal to ensure both countries were elected to the the Human Rights Council of the United Nations (UNHRC).
Saudi foreign ministry files were passed to Wikileaks in June, reports The Guardian. They referred to talks conducted with diplomats representing David Cameron’s British government ahead of the November 2013 vote in New York.
The documents have now been been translated by the monitoring organisation UN Watch – a Geneva-based non-governmental human rights organisation that scrutinises the performance of the United Nations by the yardstick of its own Charter – and newspaper the The Australian.
The classified cables showed Britain initiated the talks by asking Saudi Arabia for support ahead of the UNHRC elections. In the end both Britain and Saudi Arabia were elected to the 47 member state body.
One of the cables, referring to the elections, read: “The ministry might find it an opportunity to exchange support with the United Kingdom, where the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia would support the candidacy of the United Kingdom to the membership of the council for the period 2014-2015 in exchange for the support of the United Kingdom to the candidacy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

Remember how upset Saeb Erekat was that President Obama didn't mention Palestinians even once during his UN speech?

It turns out that the king of Jordan placed exactly the same priority on "Palestine" that Obama did.

King Abdullah's speech at the UN Monday did not use the word "Palestine" or "Palestinian" once.

His entire speech was about Muslim extremism where he put forth a seven part strategy for countering the ideology of terror.

The only oblique reference to Israel was an astonishingly hypocritical but parenthetical section on Jerusalem that he tried to put in context of Islamic extremism:
Sixth, by all means, let us be intolerant of intolerance! Extremists rely on the apathy of moderates. But moderation does not mean accepting those who trample on others and reject all who differ. Today’s global fight is not between peoples, communities or religions. It is between all moderates, of all faiths, against all extremists, in all religions. Leaders of every country, every belief, every neighbourhood, need to take a clear and public stand against intolerance of any kind. This includes respecting all places where God is worshipped, whether mosque, church, synagogue or temple.

And nothing can be more important and can have more impact in framing this respect and coexistence than Jerusalem. The Hashemite Custodianship of Jerusalem’s Islamic and Christian Holy Sites is a sacred duty, and we join Muslims and Christians everywhere in rejecting threats to the Holy Places and the Arab character of this Holy City.
Yes, King Abdullah is ignoring the importance of Jerusalem to Jews in the context of "coexistence" where Jerusalem is a purely Arab city.

But he is also ignoring the Palestinian issue altogether because it is insignificant next to the larger problems in the Arab world.

Will Saeb Erekat slam King Abdullah for this (almost certainly deliberate) slight?

Ma'an reports:

Adviser to Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas said Wednesday that while agreements with Israel had not been cancelled, the Palestinian Authority "won't comply" with the agreements, saying that “we won’t work as employees for Israel.”

Abbas said in his United Nations General Assembly Wednesday that PA's continued complicity with past peace agreements are dependent on circumstances which have not yet been clarified by Palestinian leadership.
While many understood the Palestinian president's speech to the as be groundbreaking, no clear changes have been made in regards to cooperation between the Palestinian Authority and Israel in occupied Palestinian territory.

Adviser and supreme judge for religious courts Mahmoud al-Habbash said that in his speech, Abbas began a new “stage in the relationship with Israel," adding the exact parameters of such a move remain unclear.

Asked to elaborate about future steps by the PA to make good on Abbas' announcement that the body would step back from it's commitment to past peace agreements, al-Habbash said: “future steps haven’t been made public yet."

"Each step," al-Habbash added, "will be determined according to the circumstances."

Al-Habbash said that Abbas' UNGA remarks would not be immediately implemented, and the leader would likely return to the occupied West Bank with the coordination with Israeli authorities.
So the threatened "bombshell" is really a dud.

This is the same Abbas aide who threatened World War III yesterday.

By the way, the idea that the PA has honored its agreements with Israel is ludicrous. The entire second intifada was a multi-year repudiation of all agreements.

Here are some of the agreements with Israel that Abbas has openly ignored for well over a decade from the Wye River Memorandum alone:

  • Nullifying the Palestinian National Charter provisions that call to destroy Israel (Has anyone ever seen a new version?)
  • Prohibiting illegal weapons under PA areas
  • "The Palestinian side would issue a decree prohibiting all forms of incitement to violence or terror, and establishing mechanisms for acting systematically against all expressions or threats of violence or terror."
  • "The Palestinian side was to make known its policy of zero tolerance for terror and violence against both sides."
Yet the world, as always, ignores Palestinian violations of signed agreements. On the contrary, the world supports Palestinian violations such as its own unilateral moves in Area C and applying to become a UN member state.

I come before you today from Palestine, compelled to sound the alarm about the grave dangers of what is happening in Jerusalem, where extremist Israeli groups are committing repeated, systematic incursions upon Al-Aqsa Mosque, aimed at imposing a new reality and dividing Al-Haram Al-Sharif temporally, allowing extremists, under the protection of Israeli occupying forces and accompanying ministers and Knesset members, to enter the Mosque at certain times, while preventing Muslim worshipers from accessing and entering the Mosque at those times and freely exercising their religious rights.
Jews have no religious rights in Jerusalem.

This is the scheme that the Israeli Government is pursuing, in direct violation of the status quo since before 1967 and thereafter.
Jews have no religious rights in Jerusalem.
By doing so, the occupying Power is committing a grave mistake, because we will not accept this, and the Palestinian people will not allow the implementation of this illegal scheme, which is aggravating the sensitivities of Palestinians and Muslims everywhere.
Jews also have no real religious feelings about Jerusalem - only Arabs.
I call on the Israeli Government, before it is too late, to cease its use of brutal force to impose its plans to undermine the Islamic and Christian sanctities in Jerusalem, particularly its actions at Al-Aqsa Mosque, for such actions will convert the conflict from a political to religious one, creating an explosive in Jerusalem and in the rest of the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
If Arabs don't have exclusive religious rights in Jerusalem, they will start a religious war, and I won't lift a finger to stop them.
The question of Palestine was one of the first just issues brought before the United Nations from the time of its inception, and yet it remains unresolved until this moment, as the organization and its Members continue to be unable to end this injustice inflicted upon our people and to assist our people to exercise their right to self-determination and freedom in their independent and sovereign State.
I don't want to negotiate with Israel because negotiations mean I have to give things up. So I want the international community to impose a solution on Israel while retaining my right to do whatever I want.
Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,I ask you to consider the history of the question of Palestine and the relevant United Nations resolutions to realize the obvious truth: that a historic injustice has been inflicted upon a people and a homeland, a people that had lived peacefully in their land and made genuine intellectual, cultural and humanitarian contributions to mankind.
We are particularly proud of our contributions towards airline hijackings, suicide bombings and bombing pizza shops and discos.
This people do not deserve to be deprived of their homeland, to die in exile or be swallowed by the sea, or to spend their lives fleeing from one refugee camp to another.
Even though I keep tens of thousands of my people in refugee camps myself. I could build them houses but Id rather keep them in misery.
Our people have placed their hopes on the countries of this organization to help them to gain their freedom, independence and sovereignty, so that their wish and right to their own State, like all other peoples of the Earth, can be achieved, along with a just solution for the Palestine refugee issue in accordance with General Assembly resolution 194 and the Arab Peace Initiative.
Not only do I want the international community to impose a solution; I want that solution to include the destruction of Israel by pretending that they have a right to "return."
We are calling for rightness, justice and peace.
Words that we decide how to define for our purposes.
While Palestine was partitioned into two States - according to which Israel was established 67 years ago - the second part of that resolution still awaits implementation.
My fellow Arabs never accepted partition that included a Jewish state but now we pretend that we are all for it as long as it is a stage towards the end of the Jewish state,
Do the votes by democratic countries against Palestine-related resolutions and the legitimate rights of our people serve peace and those who believe in the two-State solution? Or do they serve and encourage extremists and increase their hatred and racism, making them believe that they are above the law, to the point where they commit the burning of a Palestinian family in the town of Duma in the West Bank, claiming the lives of an infant, Ali Dawabsheh, and his father and mother?
Calling every Palestinian a terrorist is racist. Calling all Jews terrorists is acceptable speech to the UN.
Due to the time constraints, I shall not be able to discuss in detail how many Israeli violations are being committed against our people and how many repressive laws have been issued by successive Israeli governments, the latest of which is the formal legislation of instructions to fire live ammunition at and arrest and repress peaceful Palestinian demonstrators.
My definition of "peaceful" is "people who throw stones that can kill Jews."
Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen,We do not respond to the Israeli occupation’s hatred and brutality with the same. Instead, we are working on spreading the culture of peace and coexistence between our people and in our region.
Actually, we are adamantly against any form of coexistence with the hated Jews. It is hard to keep a straight face while I feed these lies to you, but I know that you'll believe anything.
Is it not the time for the six thousand Palestinian prisoners and detainees in Israeli jails to see the light of freedom and to live among their families and communities?
People who murder Jews are heroes, not criminals!
Despite all the obstacles imposed by the occupation, we, since the establishment of the Palestinian National Authority, and until this moment, have worked incessantly to build the foundations of our State, its infrastructure and sovereign national institutions.
We might have a joke of a justice system, a corrupt executive branch, and no new universities since Oslo, but we do have an Olympic team and membership in UNESCO!
We have made real progress on the ground, as affirmed by several international bodies, especially the United Nations, World Bank, and International Monetary Fund.
We promised to be financially independent and off of international charity by 2013. And you believed us then, just like you believe me now.
As for the internal Palestinian situation, we are determined to preserve the unity of our land and our people.
In fact, only last week I worked with Egypt to flood Gaza's smuggling tunnels.
Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen,Palestine is a country of holiness and peace. It is the birthplace of Christ, the messenger of love and peace, and the Isra’ and Mi’raj (ascension to heaven and night journey) of Mohammed, peace be upon him, who was sent as a mercy unto the world.
But the land is meaningless to Jews.
This is Palestine that is still looking for peace, and its people want to live in their homeland in safety, security, harmony, stability and good neighborliness with all peoples and countries of the region.
Except for...well, you know.
Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,You are all aware that Israel undermined the efforts made by the administration of President Barack Obama in past years, most recently the efforts of Secretary of State John Kerry aimed at reaching a peace agreement through negotiations.
I have been dead set against negotiations since Netanyahu was elected, and since the US and EU hate him as well, I can claim that he is the roadblock to peace without fear of contradiction.
Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,The transitional Oslo Agreement and its annexes, and the subsequent agreements signed with Israel, stipulated that the agreements would be implemented within five years, ending in 1999 with full independence for the State of Palestine and the termination of the Israeli occupation.
We waited out the five years without offering anything for peace, and then the first chance we had we started an all-out terror war against Israeli Jewish men, women and children. We should be rewarded for this decision.
We therefore declare that we cannot continue to be bound by these agreements and that Israel must assume all of its responsibilities as an occupying Power.
I threatened a bombshell and instead I am repeating that I am threatening to do something that sounds ominous but is meaningless.
May the peace, mercy and blessings of God be upon you.
Unless you are one of those...you know.
