From Ian:

From a walled compound in Sana'a, one of Yemen's last Jews confides his fears
In June 2012, Yahya Zandani's father, Aharon, was stabbed to death at the main market in Sana'a. His body was brought to Israel for burial. Nevertheless, Yahya returned to Yemen, where his wife's father and three brothers still live.
Today, the family are among Yemen's last 60 Jews — 40 of whom are huddled in a gated government compound in the heart of what is now the rebel-controlled capital, Sana'a.
Speaking by phone to The Times of Israel on Tuesday, Zandani, 31, said that despite their avowedly anti-Semitic credo, the Houthi rebels who captured Sana'a last September and have moved south to the port city of Aden, are not threatening the Jews, at least not yet. But he confided deep fears of what may lie in store.
Zandani was speaking from a compound known as the touristic city — where deposed president Ali Abdullah Saleh relocated the community in 2008 after it was driven out of the northern province of Saada by the Houthis. Arab diplomats from Iraq and Egypt have also moved into the compound in recent days, after their embassies were bombed out.
Ayaan Hirsi Ali: America's Academies for Jihad
A radical imam threatened me with death—and was later hired to preach in U.S. prisons. I was surprised, but I shouldn't have been.
Less than a year after I moved to the United States in 2006, I was asked to speak at the University of Pittsburgh. Among those who objected to my appearance was a local imam, Fouad El Bayly, of the Johnstown Islamic Center. Mr. Bayly was born in Egypt but has lived in the U.S. since 1976. In his own words, I had "been identified as one who has defamed the faith." As he explained at the time: "If you come into the faith, you must abide by the laws, and when you decide to defame it deliberately, the sentence is death."
After a local newspaper reported Mr. Bayly's comments, he was forced to resign from the Islamic Center. That was the last I would hear of him—or so I thought.
Imagine my surprise when I learned recently that the man who threatened me with death for apostasy is being paid by the U.S. Justice Department to teach Islam in American jails.
'Islam Is a Very Dark Theory': How the Son of a Founding Member of Hamas Rejected Extremism and Converted to Christianity
Mosab Hassan Yousef, the bestselling author of "Son of Hamas: A Gripping Account of Terror, Betrayal, Political Intrigue, and Unthinkable Choices," appeared on The Glenn Beck Program Monday to discuss how he rejected radical Islam and converted to Christianity.
"I was brought up in a state of delusion, believing the Islamic theory that once we control the globe and build an Islamic State we can bring humanity, justice and happiness and solve the human condition," Yousef said. "Islam is a very dark theory and we need to face this reality."
The son of one of the founding members of Hamas, Yousef worked as a spy for the Israeli intelligence service after beginning to question the ideology he had been raised with. On Monday, he reiterated his belief that "Islam is the religion of war."
"Islam is at war with everything that is not Muslim," he said. "Islam has been in a war against the west and its foundations for the last 1,400 years. This is a fact. The Islamic phenomena that we see in ISIS, Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, Boko Haram, Al Qaeda, Taliban — this is not just a new phenomenon. It has been out there for the last 1,400 years. And I think this is the time for humanity to have the courage to say no to the Islamic theory."

What Does Current Morass Say About Middle East Studies?
It's worth considering why Obama is such an outlier. While, on paper, Obama might be expected to be the most international president—with Kenyan family and a boyhood in Indonesia—when it comes to the Middle East, he had little practical background. His introduction to the region appears to have occurred in American universities, if not directly in Middle East Studies courses, than through his friendship and close association with Middle East Studies luminaries like Rashid Khalidi and perhaps Edward Said as well.
Martin Kramer, currently president of Shalem College in Jerusalem, penned in 2001 one of the best researched, careful, and damning assessments of Middle Eastern Studies, in which he traced the inverse relationship between its polemics and relevance. Much of this can be traced back to Edward Said. Said, is of course, famous for penning Orientalism, perhaps the most influential book in Middle East Studies in the last half century. Few people who cite Orientalism, however, have ever read it. If they had, they would readily see the emperor had no clothes, for Said's essay is so full of errors of both fact and logic as to suggest scholarly incompetence if not academic fraud. Quite simply, the reason why Said is so popular on campus today is because his argument became a blessing to prioritize polemic and politics above fact and scholarly rigor. For Said, up was down, wrong was right, and power was original sin.
Rashid Khalidi, a close friend of Obama from their mutual University of Chicago days, now holds a chair named in Said's honor at Columbia University. He has consistently argued that politicians and diplomats do not listen to those like himself who claim expertise in the Middle East. This was a complaint which permeated his 2004 book Resurrecting Empire: Western Footprints and America's Perilous Path in the Middle East, which I reviewed here. The irony here, of course, is that Khalidi, who was previously the PLO spokesman in Beirut, had never been to Iraq but nevertheless castigated policymakers for ignoring his advice on the subject.
Comedy Central defends new 'Daily Show' host Trevor Noah
A day after Trevor Noah was declared the new host of "The Daily Show," his graphic tweets targeting women and Jews are causing a social media backlash and Comedy Central is defending its newest late-night star.
By Tuesday, Trevor Noah was a trending topic on Twitter as he drew fire for jokes described as tasteless, hateful — and unfunny. Roseanne Barr was among those calling out the 31-year-old South African comic, who has an international following and two million Twitter followers.
"U should cease sexist & anti semitic 'humor' about jewish women & Israel," she tweeted late Monday.
In a statement, Comedy Central defended Noah as a "provocative" comedian who "spares no one, himself included."
"To judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair," said the network, adding that he has "a bright future at Comedy Central."
In a statement, ADL National Director Abraham Foxman said that he hopes that "The Daily Show" remains "funny and irreverent without trafficking in bigoted jokes at the expense of Jews."
"B'nai B'rith is concerned about the long history of anti-Semitic, anti-Israel and misogynistic tweets by the new choice to host the popular comedy program, The Daily Show," the organization said in a statement issued Tuesday. "We recognize that the platform The Daily Show provides its host is different from the stand-up comedy circuit, and we are hopeful that Noah will use this new and larger role responsibly on complex, sensitive issues.
France Arrests 3 Men in Connection with Hyper Cacher Attack
Three men have been arrested as part of an investigation into the Paris attacks in January in which 17 people were killed, the Paris prosecutor's office said on Tuesday, according to Reuters.
The men are linked to Amedy Coulibaly, one of the three Islamist terrorists who perpetrated the attacks, an official in the prosecutor's office said.
Coulibaly killed a police officer in the Paris suburb of Montrouge and four people in the Hyper Cacher Jewish supermarket, which re-opened two weeks ago having been fully renovated and with a new staff.
Since the attacks at the start of the year, seven men aged 22 to 33 have been detained and placed under formal investigation as part of a legal process opened by prosecutors on January 20, noted Reuters.
Investigators have to date made more progress on the Coulibaly angle than that of the two other perpetrators - the Kouachi brothers, who carried out the attack at the offices of French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.
New appeal revives case against Argentinian president
Argentine prosecutors launched a new appeal Tuesday of a court's decision to dismiss their case against President Cristina Kirchner for allegedly protecting Iranian officials accused of orchestrating a deadly 1994 bombing.
Prosecutors are seeking to relaunch the case that was being brought by their late colleague Alberto Nisman, who died mysteriously on January 18 after accusing Kirchner of shielding high-ranking Iranians suspected of ordering the attack on a Buenos Aires Jewish center.
Prosecutor German Moldes filed an appeal to bring the case before the next highest appeals court, which would be the third court to consider the case.
The accusations first came before Judge Daniel Rafecas, who found in a scathing ruling on February 26 that no crime was committed, saying the prosecution's own evidence "roundly refutes" its case.
The decision was upheld by the Federal Chamber last week in a 2-1 ruling.
Moldes called that decision "notably hasty" in his appeal.
No Insurance Available for Jewish Kindergartens in Belgium!
A Belgian insurance company has refused to insure a Jewish kindergarten in Brussels.
The company claimed the risk of a terror attack on the European Jewish Association-run institution was too high.
EJA General Director Rabbi Menachem Margolin called on all European governments and heads of European Union institutions to provide security to all Jewish institutions that would satisfy insurance companies, and establish an alternative insurance mechanism that would secure any institution that might fall victim to anti-Semitic attacks.
"It is truly a scandal," Rabbi Margolin said. "First and foremost, not enough is being done in order to secure Jewish institutions throughout Europe, despite our repeated requests and warnings, and then insurance companies are using the security situation as an excuse in order not to insure kindergartens.
"This is the bizarre and cynical reality facing Jewish communities across Europe," he said.
Andy Slaughter courts the hate vote
Andy Slaughter is one of Labour's worst helpers of extremists.
So this news from the Palestinian Forum in Britain (PFB) is no surprise:
The Palestinian Forum in Britain invite to attend the social monthly meeting scheduled for Saturday evening, the 4th of April 2015.
The social gathering will host Labour MP and candidate for the Party Andy Slaughter who will speak about his political platform and the role of Palestinian and Arab communities in the British elections.
PFB invite you to attend this important gathering to support those who always condone the Palestinian rights.
Your attendance is in support of the Palestinian rights and and those who work for Palestinian rights.
The Palestinian Forum in Britain

The PFB is part of the Hamas UK network.
One way you can see this is by looking at the speakers it invites to its events. They include no fewer than four foreigners who I understand have been excluded from the UK: Wagdi Ghoneim, Ahmad Nofal, Raed Salah, and Muhammad Musa al-Shareef. This may be an exclusion record for a single Islamist outfit.
Mud Wrestling With Hamas: 8 Rules for Online Combatants
I spent the better part of a day recently exchanging online missives with Chicago-based pro-Hamas hate-site host and internet troll Ali Abunimah, co-founder of the notorious Jew-hating electronic intifada. What started out as an offhand spontaneous comment on a Twitter feed about the recent J Street conference soon devolved into a digital war unconstrained by Marquess de Queensberry rules, let alone the Geneva Conventions.
During the course of several hours, I was blocked – then (after I posted a screen shot illustrating my excommunication) unblocked – from Abunimah's hate-site, became the subject of an in-depth Google background search, had my salary (obtained from a rightwing union-busting website) posted online, became the target of a public campaign to get me fired from a job I never had and a place where I'm not employed (an ironic tactic given Abunimah's self-styled pro-labor free-speech defense of racist blogger and no-longer professor Steven Salaita), and for good measure was smeared as a bigot and "Muslim hater."
As serious influence goes, Abunimah is pretty small potatoes. What elevates him a step or two above the archetypal basement troglodyte is the fact that his hate-sites attract somewhere north of 59,000 Twitter followers, including a small amen chorus of ditto-heads whose job is to repost blindly on social media whatever hatches from the mother ship. Being on the receiving end of what looks like an explosion of coarse and hateful invective – even if it only involves 25 people you don't know – can be very intimidating, which is precisely the point. The aim is to discredit and shame you into silence.
Horowitz Proclaims Why SJP Should Be Targeted
In a blistering letter to The Daily Californian, the student-run newspaper serving UC Berkeley, David Horowitz, the founder of the David Horowitz Freedom Center and the author of "Radical Son: A Generational Odyssey," writes his reasons for targeting the anti-Israel group Students for Justice in Palestine. After noting that "we are witnessing a resurgence of global Jew hatred not seen since the 1930s when Hitler was laying plans for the "Final Solution," Horowitz points out that the college campuses of America are growing more and more anti-Semitic as student groups articulate venomous messages, including events calling for the destruction of Israel, including chanting, "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free."
Horowitz explains that the groups exhibiting such behavior fall under the definition of anti-Semitism used by the U.S. government, which is stated thus: "Anti-Semitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of anti-Semitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities."
He writes bluntly, "They deny the Jewish people — and only the Jewish people — their right to self-determination, they demand that Israel be judged by standards not applied to any other nation, they deploy classic anti-Semitic imagery, they propagate the idea that Israel exists on land stolen from the Arabs, and they demonize Israel as an apartheid state."
SJP: Promoting Hate Under the Guise of Social Justice
Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) sells itself as a group of grassroots activists for human rights and justice, but what they do in reality is promote an anti-peace, anti-justice, anti-human rights agenda on campus. They host extremist, hateful speakers and programs, and reject efforts to build mutual respect and understanding between Israelis and Palestinians.

Northeastern Hillel condemns on-campus swastikas as 'cowardly acts'
The Northeastern University Hillel, an organization for Jewish students, has denounced the drawings of swastikas in a dorm common room this weekend and tied recent anti-Semitic incidents to the Israel boycott movement on campus.
"We will not be bullied by these cowardly acts," wrote the Hillel's executive director Arinne Braverman in an email.
The swastikas were found around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday by a residential assistant in a common area of the university's International Village dorm, wrote University president Joseph Aoun in an email to the campus community.
According to Braverman, it was not the only possibly anti-Semitic incident to affect students this weekend. A mezuzah, a religious door hanging, was vandalized at an off-campus apartment building popular with Northeastern students, she wrote.
Honest Reporting: BBC Interview Treats Hamas Leader With Kid Gloves
Is this the BBC's idea of an April Fool's Day joke? Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen interviews Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal and gives the terror chief a free platform to make some laughable statements that go virtually unchallenged.
A couple of nuggets:
Netanyahu is the most extreme leader. And the one who likes to shed blood the most. That is why we are expecting difficult times. It is the responsibility of the international community to put a stop to his stubbornness, and Israeli extremism. …
Israel with its extremist leadership has killed the peace process, the two-state solution and every opportunity for a political solution for the Palestinian cause. …
The Palestinian people are in a movement for national liberation. It is a just cause and it is certainly not terrorism. Quite the opposite; the Palestinians have been the victims of Israeli terrorism for decades. I condemn any side that is practicing extremism and killing based on identity or affiliation. …

We are an active resistance with a just cause battling the occupier. We have a moderate ideology and an open mind. Others practice violence under the name of jihad, which we condemn.
Meshaal even has the gall to compare his "resistance" to that of Nelson Mandela, George Washington and Charles de Gaulle fighting Nazi occupation in World War Two.
A question for Jeremy Bowen and his morally-challenged BBC handlers
Just three jaw-dropping - and unchallenged - quotes from the text version of "Hamas leader Meshaal warns of Israeli 'extremism' after elections":
- In an interview with BBC Middle East editor Jeremy Bowen in Qatar, Mr Meshaal said attacks on Israel would continue "as long as there is occupation, aggression, war and killing". But he stressed that Hamas was "careful to respect international humanitarian law and to target only military targets".
- "...Israel killed the peace process," he added, blaming Mr Netanyahu's outgoing government, along with "extremist forces" in Israel, for the collapse of the US-brokered direct negotiations last year.
- Hamas... was "an active resistance with a just cause, battling the occupier." "Others practice violence under the name of jihad, which we condemn. And this is not Islam. Islam encourages its followers to fight those who occupy their land and their sacred places. But Islam does not allow killing innocent people, civilians, or killing based on identity, belief and different views, political or religious."
PLO Fabricator Gets Washington Post Soapbox
In George Orwell's enduringly instructive dystopian novel, 1984, the Ministry of Truth—"war is peace," "freedom is slavery," "ignorance is strength"—functioned as the department of lies. The fictional ministry has an actual branch in the U.S. capital. It goes by the name of the Palestine Liberation Organization's Washington, D.C. delegation.
Attempting to refute the irrefutable, delegation head Maen Rashid Areikat took to The Washington Post letters to the editor section ("Palestinians seek peace and justice," March 26, 2015) to falsify facts in columnist Charles Krauthammer's indictment of Palestinian rejectionism ("No peace in our time," March 20).
Krauthammer noted that Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat rejected U.S.-Israeli offers of a West Bank and Gaza Strip state in exchange for peace in 2000 and 2001 and Mahmoud Abbas did so in 2008. Areikat claimed "there were no written offers," as if spoken proposals would not have been worth pursuing.
In fact, what came to be known as "the Clinton parameters" regarding the deals Arafat spurned at Camp David in 2000 and Taba in 2001 are well known. Likewise, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert conveyed the outlines of a "two-state solution," a map included, to Abbas in 2008—to which the latter replied, in effect, "I'll get back to you" but as Olmert wrote in a Post Op-Ed six years ago never did ("Stop Focusing on the Settlements to Achieve Peace in the Middle East," July 17, 2009).
Revisiting BBC reporting on July 2014 Shuja'iya market incident
On the same day, Martin Patience produced a filmed report on the same incident for BBC television news which still appears on the corporation's website under the title "Gaza conflict: 'Israeli market strike kills 15′". Like the written report, Patience's account tells of civilians attacked by "an Israeli airstrike" and he informs viewers that:
That incident is one of several which appear in the latest report from the Military Attorney General. Investigation into the incident shows that the BBC's rapid and unquestioning repetition of Hamas officials' tales of an out-of-the-blue Israeli airstrike on civilians during a cease-fire breached editorial guidelines on both accuracy and impartiality.
In light of the fact that last year the BBC announced that "However long ago our online content was first published, if it's still available, editorial complaints may legitimately be made regarding it", the BBC clearly needs to either remove those two reports from its website or to amend them with prominent clarification of the actual circumstances of the incident.
After two years, US restores military aid to Egypt
President Barack Obama on Tuesday released military aid to Egypt that was suspended after the 2013 overthrow of the government, in an effort to boost Cairo's ability to combat the extremist threat in the region.
The White House said Obama notified Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi in a phone call Tuesday that the US would be sending 12 F-16 fighter jets, 20 missiles and up to 125 tank kits, while continuing to request $1.3 billion in military assistance for Egypt. The White House said Egypt will remain the second-largest recipient of US foreign military financing worldwide.
The funds were suspended 21 months ago when el-Sissi, then military chief, overthrew Egypt's first democratically elected leader, Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. But Washington could not provide almost half of the annual aid package — along with assistance held up from previous years — until it certified advances by el-Sissi's government on democracy, human rights and rule of law or issued a declaration that such aid is in the interests of US national security.
Personnel Receive Message Advising Them to Guard Identities, Homes Against Islamic State
U.S. Army personnel received a message Friday warning them that the Islamic State terrorist organization is using social media to obtain the personal information, including names and addresses, of members of the armed services, and offering them advice for protecting their identities, homes, and persons against possible attack.
The message, reported Saturday in the Washington Times, came after the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, released the names of 100 members of the armed forces whom it claimed to be targeting for assassination.
According to the Washington Times' report, the threatened assassinations were a response to airstrikes in Syria and Iraq.
The message told military personnel to "assume everyone will be able to see what you are posting or Tweeting, even if the site limits your posts to your friends and family," and advised them not to "arrange meetings with people you meet online."
US denies its drone killed 2 Iranian advisers in Iraq
Iran's Revolutionary Guards says a US drone strike has killed two of its advisers in Iraq, though the US said Monday it has only struck militants in its campaign against the Islamic State group.
The claim came as negotiators on Monday attempted to reach a deal on Iran's contested nuclear program, which hard-liners in the Islamic Republic have opposed as giving away too much to the West.
The Guards said on its sepahnews.ir website the strike happened March 23, just after the US-led coalition began airstrikes to support Iraqi forces trying to retake the Islamic State-held city of Tikrit. It identified the dead as Ali Yazdani and Hadi Jafari, saying they were buried Sunday. It called them advisers, without elaborating on whether Iran contacted Iraqi or US forces after the strike.
Spree of paintball attacks against Hasidic Jews in Brooklyn eyed as hate crimes
Three paintball attacks targeting Hasidic Jews — a man and a trio of teens — in a span of a week in the same Brooklyn neighborhood are believed to be related and may have been fueled by hate, police said Monday.
On Friday night, two boys, ages 16 and 13, were walking with their grandfather, Abraham Franczoz, 65, from their synagogue when an unknown shooter opened fire with the recreational gun on Morton St. near Juliana Place in Williamsburg. The older teen was hit in the arm and the younger boy in the ankle, according to police.
"I don't feel safe at all right now," Franczoz said, adding the family didn't report the crime until after the Sabbath.
"I feel that the neighborhood is not being protected," he said. "If it happened once, I would understand, twice is too much."
On March 22, a 37-year-old man was shot in the face by a paintball as he walked to a synagogue on Kent Ave. at Hewes St. around 7:30 p.m, police said. (h/t Bob Knot)
'Israelites Left Egypt, but Egypt Didn't Leave Them'
The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) held a press conference in Jerusalem ahead of Pesach (Passover), the holiday celebrating how Jews were redeemed from slavery in Egypt, and revealed new archaeological finds demonstrating that an Egyptian administrative center existed in the region 3,400 years ago.
"The Israelites left Egypt; however, it seems that even years after their return Egypt did not leave the Israelites and their descendants," said archaeologist Amir Ganor of the IAA regarding the new finds.
The discovery was made by the IAA's Unit for the Prevention of Antiquities Robbery, which located an underground cave with signs of plundering in the Tel Halif region.
Thieves had started looting 3,000-year-old pottery vessels from the site, but the IAA was able to prevent further damage to the cave and excavate the valuable archaeological artifacts still in the cave.
Most of the artifacts found in the cave dated to the Late Bronze Age (circa 1500 BCE) and the Iron Age (1000 BCE). More than 300 pottery vessels of different types were found in the cave, many of them having survived intact.
Aside from pottery the find included dozens of pieces of jewelry made of bronze, shells and faience, unique vessels fashioned from yellowish alabaster, seals, seal impressions and cosmetic vessels.
Art Garfunkel in TLV, sans Simon
Art Garfunkel will perform in Israel on June 10, at Tel Aviv's Bloomfield Stadium.
Tickets go on sale Thursday morning at 9 a.m., and will range in price from NIS 299 to NIS 1,100.
The golden-toned vocalist has had some voice issues in recent years, and had to cancel a short reunion tour with his former partner, Paul Simon, in 2010 and several other performance dates. He resumed touring again last year, and told Rolling Stone in 2014 that his voice is "96%" where it was pre-surgery.
In the Rolling Stone interview, he spoke about being in his 70s, and the aches and pains that come with age. But, said Garfunkel, "I'm a rock & roll kid. I'm particularly young now that I have the thrill of a returned voice. I'm so grateful."
Europe's biggest bank now Israeli tech customer
Santander, through its Santander Innoventures Fund, said that it was investing $5 million in Israeli fintech start-up MyCheck. The investment kicks-off MyCheck's Series B funding round, and gives Santander, Europe's largest banking group, its first stake in Israel's financial technology ecosystem.
MyCheck, founded in Israel in 2011, is an app that allows users to pay bills at restaurants, bars, hotels, and other places of entertainment using their smartphones – a long-sought after financial technology goal, turning the smartphone into a kind of credit card. The MyCheck app can be downloaded for free from the App Store or Google Play for individual use, but the company's bread and butter is in white-label versions for stores, restaurants, and other venues. Such apps, MyCheck claims, increase customer loyalty (the app also lets venues manage their customer loyalty programs), and in fact, MyCheck said, it has seen a 320% growth in transaction volumes over the last six months, much of it from the private-label activity.
The funds from Santander will be used to accelerate MyCheck's international expansion, especially across the U.S and Western Europe, bolster sales and marketing, and enhance business intelligence capabilities. Santander in return gets equity in the company.
Roll-up TV screens on the way, Tel Aviv U researchers say
Today, you can watch TV on a tablet or a smartphone, using networked apps offered by cable TV companies. But the viewing experience leaves a lot to be desired, with images shrunk down to fit the few inches of the device's screen.
How about watching TV on the go on a full-sized screen that rolls up for storage and transportation? Tel Aviv University researchers are working on just that, using peptides and DNA to create a material that emits a full range of colors in one pliable pixel layer, allowing it to be attached to a microprocessor or video chip to display images just like rigid LCD and LED screens do.
Patents have already been filed, and several consumer product manufacturers are seriously eyeing the tech, the university said.
"Our material is light, organic, and environmentally friendly," said Prof. Ehud Gazit, who along with doctoral student Or Berger of the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology at TAU's George S. Wise Faculty of Life Sciences published a paper in the publication Nature Nanotechnology on the technology. "It is flexible, and a single layer emits the same range of light that requires several layers today. By using only one layer, you can minimize production costs dramatically, which will lead to lower prices for consumers as well."
Israeli tech to keep an eye on 'electricity gluttons'
In the past, the only way to get "power gluttons" to save electricity was to harangue them via public service announcements or appeals by mail, but in the Big Data era, companies have a lot of new resources to ensure that customers use only their fair share.
To develop some of that technology, German energy giant RWE AG, one of the five largest energy and gas companies in Europe, is opening an innovation center in Israel in order to develop tech for a smart grid – a metering system that will keep track of how consumers use electricity.
The launch of the Israel Innovation Center, the company said, was "spurred by the desire to be connected and present in the vibrant Israeli hi-tech eco-system, enabling it to identify and connect with innovative technologies which can enrich RWE's business offerings, and contribute to its customers."
YouTube — the 11th plague of Passover?
A Jewish holiday just wouldn't be a Jewish holiday without a new video from the Maccabeats, who started the Jewish holiday video trend five years ago.
This time, they're singing "Dayenu" in a variety of genres, including doowop, heavy metal, funk, barbershop quartet, and dubstep. Our favorite part is when they dance around in lederhosen in the polka portion of the performance. Who wouldn't love that?
The Maccabeats were founded at Yeshiva University, but there are other college a cappella groups getting into the Festival of Freedom spirit this year.
Here are The Jabberwocks of Brown University in a video produced by Brown RISD Hillel. If Justin Timberlake were to do a Jewish holiday video, it would sound like this:
Noha Hashad's exodus from Egypt
They say every generation one must see themselves as if they themselves made the exodus from Egypt. Egyptian nuclear physicist Noha Hashad not only escaped Egypt, but sought Jerusalem. The 51-year-old native Egyptian Muslim was an accomplished academic who lectured at many universities when she began identifying with Israel.
Noha was arrested by security forces belonging to Hosni Mubarak's regime. Her crime? Looking for proof of the Jews' rights to the land of Israel in the Quran. She was jailed for 12 years. Noha was interrogated and tortured under suspicion of spying for Israel. Her interrogations left her handicapped. She managed to escape Egypt during the Arab Spring protests and the fall of the Mubarak regime in 2011, fleeing to Jordan and then coming to Israel as a refugee.
This is the first time Noha Hashad's story is coming to light.
"Israel is like a jewel, a diamond, I am very fortunate to be here," she said, sitting near the beach in Haifa. Noha founded a center for peace in the Middle East, with respected scholars of Middle East studies, and is working on the English translation of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' first book, "The Beginning and End of Zionism."
Mother of slain Toulouse soldier leading trip to Israel
Latifa Ibn Ziaten's life changed forever on March 11, 2012, when her son was murdered.
Master Sergeant Imad Ibn Ziaten, an off-duty paratrooper, was 30 years old when Mohammed Merah, a French national of Algerian origin, shot him dead in Toulouse – the first in a series of attacks Merah carried out that month. On March 15, Merah killed two other soldiers in the small southern town of Montauban. Four days later, he came back to Toulouse, shooting dead three Jewish children and their teacher on the doorstep of the Ozar Hatorah Jewish day school before police tracked him down and killed him following a long siege.
Returning to France after burying her son in the family's Morocco hometown, Latifa Ibn Ziaten vowed to dedicate her life to peace between religions and peoples, especially among youngsters. She founded an organization for that purpose, named after her son: the Imad Ibn Ziaten Association for Youth and Peace.
On April 22, she and a group of young students from the Parisian region will be going to Israel – not simply as tourists, but as part of the organization's "Voyage for Living Together" project.
To prepare for the trip, she and the 15 youngsters took part in an interactive workshop Tuesday, organized by the Israeli Embassy in Paris.
Ibn Ziaten and her associates have taken it upon themselves to work with children and adolescents in all sectors of society, including in prisons.
Ministry of Defense: Successful test of "Magic Wand" system
The Ministry of Defense explained that the Magic Wand system will be able to deal more effectively with threats from the enemy in the near future. In the test, the system was tested with a number of scenarios that simulate objectives with which the system can cope during a time of conflict.
The success of the test is a significant milestone in the operational capability of Israel to defend itself against anticipated threats in the region. The experiment was led by Rafael in an experimental field in the center of the country. "Today we completed the third series of tests of the system which is the peak of global technology," said Yair Ramati, head of the Administration for the Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure. "The excellent outcomes of the test allow us to realize all of our goals. The system will know how to deal with the Lebanese threat."
In the last experiment before the target missile launch, MMR radar revealed and transferred the data to the center for management of shooting, which calculated the protection against it. The "Magic Wand" interception was successfully launched and carried out all phases of the flight and intercepted the target as planned. (h/t Yenta Press)

We don't hear enough stories about Palestinian Arab entrepreneurship.

Palestinian Authority police seized more than 10,000 marijuana plants covering a 3 dunum area south of Hebron on Monday.

The plants filled ten greenhouses. The owner of the greenhouses was arrested.

(This is not an April Fool's post.)

Geneva, April 1 - The United Nations Human Rights Council has appointed a commission to collect and analyze evidence that the ten plagues wrought against Egypt violated international law, and may constitute crimes against humanity.

Egypt submitted a request last month to the Council alleging that the release of the Israelite nation was secured under duress, and that the Israelite god had perpetrated mass atrocities in the process. As part of the negotiating strategy with the Pharaoh of the time, the Hebrew god YHWH repeatedly struck the nation with various calamities, disrupting life, agriculture, commerce, diet, and causing an unknown number of deaths and injuries. The request asked the Council to investigate, noting that although the events took place nearly 2,500 years ago, there is no statute of limitations on such crimes.

Specifically, the commission's mandate includes a series of ten events in the year leading up to the Israelite exodus, with the addition of a mass murder allegation charging that on the way out, YHWH disproportionately smote the entire cavalry corps of the Egyptian military. The commission will also explore the evidence of two accessories to the crimes identified as Moses and Aaron, brothers who may have participated in some or all of the alleged atrocities.

Investigators will have to sort through varying accounts of the events, but the broad outline of the narrative has been broadly accepted for some time. After encountering Egyptian resistance to his demands, YHWH dispatched Israelite brothers Moses and Aaron to threaten the Pharaoh over possession of at least 600,000 Hebrew slaves that the god wanted to acquire for himself. YHWH allegedly transformed the Nile to blood, then caused a massive frog infestation; according to some reports, vicious and venomous other reptiles also descended upon the land. The first two came with a threat, but then YHWH brought lice with no warning.

The pattern repeated when Moses threatened and brought wild beasts, animal pestilence, but initiated boils with no warning - though some reports claim swarms of gnats instead of beasts; and again, when he threatened hail and locust swarms, but caused thick darkness even in daytime with no advance warning. Finally, YHWH allegedly resorted to actual killing, when he smote all of Egypt's firstborn males.

The commission will attempt to depose Egyptians claiming to be eyewitnesses or victims, then build a coherent case for or against recommending that the International Criminal Court open a formal criminal investigation. However, several important hurdles may impede its work, chief among them an apparent paucity of survivors to interview, leaving only documentary evidence of disputed veracity. Such problems have not hampered other UNHRC commissions in the Middle East, since they often amount to a technicality in the foregone conclusion envisioned by the report authors, but if a bona fide criminal case by the ICC is the goal, and not mere political posturing, then rules of evidence may eliminate the vast majority of universally accepted credible sources.

The Council has already appointed Canadian professor William Schabas to head the commission, citing his experience with similar inquiries.

Ron Prosor: The U.N.’s War on Israel
The United Nations is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. It was intended to be a temple of peace, but this once great global body has been overrun by the repressive regimes that violate human rights and undermine international security.
In 1949, when the United Nations admitted Israel as a member state, it had 58 member countries and about half had a democratic orientation. Today, the landscape of the organization has changed drastically. From 51 member states at its founding in 1945, the institution has grown to 193 members — fewer than half of which are democracies.
The very nations that deny democratic rights to their people abuse the United Nations’ democratic forums to advance their interests. The largest of these groups comprises members from the 120-member-strong bloc known as the Non-Aligned Movement. Since 2012, the bloc has been chaired by Iran, which has used its position to bolster its allies and marginalize Israel.
In March, the United Nations closed the annual meeting of its Commission on the Status of Women by publishing a report that effectively singled out just one country for condemnation: Israel. The commission apparently had nothing to say about the Sudanese girls who are subjected to female genital mutilation. It also had nothing to say about the Iranian women who have been punished for crimes of “adultery” by stoning. These oversights may have something to do with the fact that both Iran and Sudan sit on the 45-member commission.
PMW: Palestinian Authority incites religious hatred
The Palestinian Authority continues to incite religious hatred, spreading the libel that Israel is in the process of destroying the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The text on the above image is supposed to instill fear and hatred in Palestinians that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is in danger, threatened by Israel:
"What are you waiting for?
Are you waiting for them to destroy this? (Visual of the Al-Aqsa Mosque -Ed.)
In order to build this?" (Visual of the Temple -Ed.)
[Al-Asima, Feb. 25, 2015]

The charge that the Mosque will be destroyed unless Palestinians take active steps to prevent it, was published alongside an article in Al-Asima, a bi-weekly distributed with the official PA daily, which repeated the libel that Israel seeks to destroy the Mosque in order to build the third Temple in its place:
"It is no secret that the 'Israeli' aspiration since the occupation of East Jerusalem in the war of 1967 has been to first divide the Al-Aqsa Mosque and perhaps even to destroy it, in order to build, eventually, their alleged Temple."
[Al-Asima, distributed with official PA daily Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Feb. 25, 2015]

These PA libels that incite fear and hatred of Israelis are widely believed by Palestinians. A poll conducted four months ago found that 56% of Palestinians believe that "Israel intends to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque" and 86% of Palestinians believe that "Al-Haram Al-Sharif (i.e., the Temple Mount) is in grave danger."
Hamas Chief Haniyeh Calls for Palestinian Unity for West Bank Intifada
Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh called on Palestinian factions, including the Palestinian Authority, to unite and wage war on Israel with an intifada and armed resistance in the West Bank, Israel’s NRG reported on Tuesday.
Haniyeh also addressed the results of Israel’s elections earlier this month, saying that the “re-election of Netanyahu and the reinforcement of the Likud Party have revealed the true face of the occupation.” He then stressed the need to move on to a real strategy of Palestinian unity against the “occupation.”
Mohammad Al-Hindi, a member of Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s political bureau also commented on the Israeli elections, claiming that they showed there was really no difference between Israel’s political parties. “We have been in negotiation for 20 years, and have been led astray after the minor political differences [between Israel's political parties.] Israel continuously announces that it is building new settlements, and says very clearly that there is no reason for negotiation, yet the Palestinian Authority continues to shout ‘two states!’ Netanyahu said that there will not be two states, and we are crying and begging the world.”
Al-Hindi said there was no point in waiting for a change in the world’s opinion. “How does the Authority intend to resume negotiations with Netanyahu, when he declares that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel only?”

Elliott Abrams: Yemen and Gaza: Why the different reactions?
So, taking fire from a civilian area in which shooters were hiding, the Saudis struck back. When Israel does that in Gaza, where it is the common practice of Hamas to hide in and shoot from civilian areas, and to store weapons in schools and hospitals (including those run by the United Nations), what happens? Israel is universally condemned. U.N. investigation commissions are appointed, and reports such as the egregious Goldstone report (officially, the "The United Nations Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict") are issued. The U.N. Security Council holds special sessions, and the U.N. Human Rights Council adds additional "hate Israel" meetings to its usual list.
I cannot recall an incident where Israel struck at a refugee camp and killed 40 people all at once, also injuring 200 others, but I am willing to bet on the world reaction to this Saudi attack: zero. No meetings, commissions, no reports.
What are the lessons to be drawn? That the Arab group and the Islamic nations have more votes in the U.N. than Israel, which of course has but one. That there is an indefensible double standard when it comes to evaluating Israel. And, that hiding behind civilians is a widespread crime. Nothing new here.
Michael Lumish: Barack Obama: The Most Dangerous Man in the World
The problem is not merely that Obama does not like Israel - and he doesn't - it is that by enabling an Iranian bomb he is laying the ground for a nuclear arms race, if not a nuclear holocaust, in that part of the world.
The dispassion with which so many Obama supporters follow this story is disquieting. The impression that one gets in reading the western-left press is that they honestly do not care one whit whether Iran gets the bomb or not.
Many would argue that it is only fair that if the US has the bomb and Israel has the bomb and these other countries have the bomb, why should not Iran get it, as well? Others would suggest, rightfully so, that if we were Iran we would want the bomb as a defensive measure and I have no doubt that when the Iranian government considers its strategic-military place in the world a nuclear shield looks mighty attractive.
While it may very well be in Iran's national interest to gain nuclear weaponry, it is most definitely in the national interest of both the United States and Israel (not to mention Europe and the entire rest of the planet) to prevent Iran from gaining that technology.
Unfortunately, Barack Obama seems to disagree.
Obama's Iran Adviser Worked for Pro-Tehran Regime Lobby?
The White House released a list of the top National Security Council (NSC) officials who held a video conference with Obama late Tuesday to update him on the talks with Iran in Switzerland's Lausanne.
On the list, which was published by The Daily Beast, the name Sahar Nowrouzzadeh stands out alongside the title "NSC Director for Iran."
A picture of Nowrouzzadeh with US Secretary of State John Kerry, in which she is seen explaining Iranian traditions, was posted on March 20 to the Twitter account of US Envoy for the anti-Islamic State (ISIS) coalition Brett McGurk.
Breitbart News media site decided to take a closer look at Nowrouzzadeh, and in an investigative exposé found that she appears to have previously worked for the National Iranian-American Council (NIAC), an organization that is accused of lobbying for the Iranian regime.
The site documented how a person with the same name was credited with authoring a number of publications for NIAC.
Support for Palestinian state hits two-decade low in U.S.
A new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows that the idea of establishing a new Palestinian state alongside Israel in the Middle East is more divisive than at any point in the past 20 years, as a long period of generally bipartisan support for the concept has passed.
The idea is still slightly above water, with 39 percent in support and 36 percent in opposition. But that's a far cry from past Gallup polling in which a majority of Americans supported the idea (as many as 58 percent in 2003).
The 39 percent who support the idea is the lowest that number has been in WaPo-ABC and Gallup polling since 1998, and the three-point gap between support and opposition is the smallest in at least two decades — though not statistically significant relative to other recent polls from Gallup.
France preparing draft for UN resolution on Palestine
France sees a window of opportunity after Israel’s elections to get the United States on board with a new push for Mideast peace, and is preparing a draft UN Security Council resolution in about 12 days, according to French diplomatic officials.
The draft would define the pre-1967 frontier as a reference point for border talks but allow room for exchanges of territory, designate Jerusalem as capital of both Israel and a Palestinian state and call for a fair solution for Palestinian refugees, one official told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
While the substance of the French draft may not differ much from past failed efforts to revive Mideast peace talks, France is hoping this time to avoid a US veto at the UN because of increasing American frustration with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The French official described a possible “backdoor” for negotiations now, and said “all actors including the Americans now realize that all other ways have been explored, without success.”
Should Israel Fear the UN?
Many countries cast their votes not on the basis of what is right or wrong, of what is just or unjust, but rather according to their narrow interests, their fear of Arab oil suppliers, or their Marxist principles.
That’s why just last month, the UN Commission on the Status of Women voted 27 to two to condemn Israel for “occupying” Palestinian women, 98% of whom are actually live under the rule of the Palestinian Authority. The accusers included well-known deniers of women’s rights such as Iran, Sudan, and, yes, the Palestinian Authority itself.
A UN Security Council resolution on Palestinian statehood would likewise be a moral farce. Those who vote in favor will not be considering whether such a state would be a democracy or a dictatorship; whether or not “Palestine” would endanger Israel; or what the Palestinian Authority’s track record reveals about how a Palestinian state would behave.
Such real-world considerations have no place in the absurd, upside down fantasy world in which the United Nations dwells. That’s why whenever someone threatens to pass some nasty resolution at the UN, Israel and its friends should recall the simple wisdom of Ben-Gurion: “Oom, shmoom!”
Israeli Peace Gestures Not Only Don’t Work. They Make Things Worse.
The same dynamic applies to Netanyahu’s gestures. It was he who endorsed a two-state solution and then backed up his statement with a settlement freeze in the West Bank for ten months. But Netanyahu got no credit for this or any concessions in return from the Palestinians.
Netanyahu would do well to lower the tone of his rhetoric. A cautious leader, he has been rightly accused of carrying a small stick while speaking very loudly. But the expectation that settlement freezes or similar gestures will ease tensions with President Obama is a pipe dream. Even worse, along with Obama’s hostility, these moves may only encourage Hamas to see it, as they have always viewed such gestures, as weakness and an invitation to another round of violence such as the one that led to thousands of rockets being launched from Gaza at Israeli cities.
The diplomatic isolation of Israel that Obama is contemplating is a serious problem. But Israelis have had enough of futile unilateral gestures and rightly so. They have accomplished nothing in the past. Nor will they ameliorate the animosity for Israel in the Muslim and Arab worlds as well as Europe that is rooted more in anti-Semitism than in complaints about the location of the borders of the Jewish state. Until a sea change occurs in Palestinian political culture, Israel’s leaders would be wise to make no more concessions that will only whet the appetite of the terrorists for more Jewish blood. Nor should Netanyahu be under the illusion that President Obama will react with any more generosity toward Israel in the next two years than he has in the previous six. Far from staving off destruction as Ross and his friends think, their advice will likely lead to more diplomatic problems as well as more violence. Just as doctors are advised by their Hippocratic oaths to do no harm, so, too, should Israel’s prime minister be wise enough to eschew a repetition of the mistakes that he and his predecessors have made in the not-so-distant past.
Khaled Abu Toameh: Senior Palestinian official: Oslo accords are dead
The Oslo Accords are dead and the Palestinian Authority leadership is about to ask the UN Security Council to recognize a Palestinian state in the pre-1967 lines, a senior Fatah official said on Tuesday.
Othman Abu Gharbieh, a member of the Fatah Central Committee, told the Palestinian daily Al-Quds there would be no return to the previous peace process with Israel, especially in view of the results of the Israeli election.
“The Oslo Accords are dead, although a death certificate has yet to be issued,” Abu Gharbieh said. “We will resort to international boycotts and sanctions and popular resistance [against Israel].”
The Palestinians would also proceed with their intention to suspend security coordination with Israel, he said.
Palestinians join International Criminal Court
The Palestinian Authority became a member of the International Criminal Court in Wednesday and was marking the occasion with a low-key ceremony at the court’s headquarters.
Palestinians signed the court’s founding treaty in January and their membership came into force Wednesday, an event welcomed by activists who see it as an opportunity to bring accountability to years of conflict between Palestinians and Israel.
Israel is not a member of the ICC, but the country’s military and civilian leaders could now face charges if they are believed to have committed crimes on Palestinian territory.
The court’s chief prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, opened a preliminary investigation in mid-January after the Palestinians formally accepted the court’s jurisdiction dating back to just before last year’s Israel-Hamas conflict.
Palestinians join international court to fight Israel
Palestinian officials have stressed that the ICC will not end the almost 50-year Israeli military occupation or lead to a state. The ICC prosecutes individuals, not nations.
If the ICC prosecutor concludes the facts lead her to open a formal investigation, a pre-trial chamber of ICC judges will rule whether to go forward or not. A trial may then follow.
ICC prosecutors have examined allegations of war crimes in 20 countries but opened investigations in only eight. The court has concluded three trials, winning two convictions.
Eugene Kontorovich of Northwestern University School of Law said that it is possible the judges at the ICC will ultimately decide that the Palestinians do not have standing at the court or that the Israelis should not be subject to an investigation, for example, because they carry out their own inquires.
Kontorovich said the court has only operated for a dozen years and that there has not been enough case law to predict what may happen next.
PA Denies Deal Was Made to Halt ICC Bid in Exchange for Unfreezing Tax Revenues
The Palestinian Authority has denied that an Israeli move to unfreeze the PA’s tax revenues was part of a deal to get the Palestinians to halt their bid to have Israel prosecuted at the International Criminal Court (ICC) Ha’aretz reported yesterday. The report cited an anonymous senior Palestinian official.
“We continue to seek membership of the International Criminal Court and we expect the ICC to open an investigation into Israeli settlements, as well as the recent war in Gaza,” the official said.
“The reports in the Israeli newspapers are nothing more than spin from Netanyahu’s bureau; there was no such agreement. The money that Netanyahu transferred is Palestinian money and he isn’t doing us any favors.” …
An Unconscionable Smear: Israel, Race, and the American Left
If the steady, but manageable flow of ignorant commentary on Israel of late has turned into a flood, it’s because of a particular tactic of the left employed in abundance since the Israeli elections. A surefire way to misunderstand Israeli politics is to view it through the stable lens of America’s two-party system. And one meme that has gained traction on the left during Benjamin Netanyahu’s premiership is the lazy, obtuse narrative that he acts as some sort of representative of the Republican Party rather than his own party and country. Such self-refuting nonsense doesn’t generally need to be dignified with attention. But the latest version represents a despicable smear that demands a response.
Juan Williams’s column in The Hill changes the attack in two ways. The first is that he joins some of his more doltish peers in the new belief that congressional Republicans are now responsible for Netanyahu’s words and actions. This is merely an escalation of the Democrats’ recent campaign to turn Israel into a partisan issue and demand the left break with Israel to show appropriate loyalty to Barack Obama. In doing so Williams and others are now pawning Israel off on the Republicans: they don’t even want to deal with the Jewish state except to periodically upbraid it.
This is toxic, but it pales in comparison to Williams’s next trick. Once he’s assigned Republicans blame for Bibi, he then transfers the left’s racial grievances to Netanyahu as well. And he thereby threatens not only to rewrite recent Israeli history but to do so in a way that attacks the history of black-Jewish relations in the U.S. and agitates for the crumbling of African-American support for Israel in the future, all in a deeply dishonest way.
Obama’s Two State Tantrum
Israel isn’t the barrier to a Palestinian state. The PLO and Hamas can’t even get along long enough to form a state or hold an election. Blaming Netanyahu for actually addressing these facts is the height of cynicism from an administration that until recently avoided investing its energies in peace negotiations because it knew that was a dead end.
Obama doesn’t really believe in a Palestinian state. He’s throwing a two state tantrum because it gives him a convenient angle of attack against Netanyahu. The Israeli election was about either forcing out Netanyahu or isolating him. Having failed at the first, Obama is defaulting back to the second.
This isn’t about peace. It’s about fighting and winning a political war against Netanyahu in order to free Obama to secure his nuclear deal with Iran.
Obama claims that Netanyahu has shown that he is untrustworthy when it comes to peace. Instead he urges us to trust our lives to an Ayatollah who calls for “Death to America”, but doesn’t ‘really’ mean it.
Netanyahu voices outrage that nuclear talks go on while Iran vows to destroy Israel
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday excoriated world powers over their dogged pursuit of a nuclear deal with Iran, pointing to recent statements by officials in Tehran — notably their calls to eliminate Israel — as evidence of the Islamic Republic’s unwillingness to compromise on its nuclear ambitions and campaign of “terror, subjugation and conquest.”
In tones of moral outrage, he issued a brief, infuriated statement to camera, protesting that the talks were continuing in Lausanne even as Iran reiterated its insistent goal of destroying the Jewish state.
“Yesterday an Iranian general brazenly declared, and I quote, ‘Israel’s destruction is nonnegotiable,'” Netanyahu began, referring to a statement by Mohammad Reza Naqd, the commander of the Basij militia of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
“But evidently, giving Iran’s murderous regime a clear path to the bomb is negotiable,” he said. “This is unconscionable.”
Statement by PM Netanyahu on Lausanne Talks

Netanyahu: Deal will leave Iran ‘less than a year’ from bomb
Netanyahu said that while “I greatly appreciate the brave covenant” between Israel and the US, the two countries disagree over how to thwart Iran. “When it comes to an existential threat, Israel must stand up for itself,” he said.
“The land all around us is trembling,” he said, alluding to the growing unrest in the Middle East. “The greatest threat to our future and our security is and will remain Iran’s attempt to arm itself with nuclear weapons.”
The time Iran will need to break out to a nuclear weapon, if it signs a deal with world powers in Lausanne, “will be reduced to less than a year, and possibly a lot less than that,” the prime minister warned. Such a deal, whose emerging terms have been the subject of many reports, would “pave the way” to a nuclear weapon.
The Obama administration says any deal will stretch the time Iran needs to make a nuclear weapon from the present two to three months to at least a year. But critics object that it would keep Tehran’s nuclear technology intact.
Ex-intel chief: If Iran’s uranium isn’t exported, US will have failed with deal
A former head of the IDF’s military intelligence branch said Tuesday morning that the emerging nuclear agreement with Iran would be a “bad deal,” if it is indeed finalized around the terms that have been made public.
However, said Amos Yadlin in an interview to Israel Radio, three “core technical issues” are still not agreed upon by Tehran and the P5+1 powers – research and development, the military aspects of Iran’s nuclear program, and the shipping out of fissile material to a third-party country.
“Without the export of the 7-8 tons of low-enriched uranium, the Americans do not have the goal they set” of keeping Iran a year away from enough fuel for a nuclear weapon, said Yadlin, the Zionist Union’s pick for defense minister during the recent elections, who currently runs the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv.
The Capitulationist: Obama’s Diplomatic Surrender to Iran
Obama’s promised over and over, even in State of the Union addresses, that his goal was to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. Now, even members of his own party acknowledge what they’re negotiating for is to extend Iran’s nuclear break-out time to one year.
“The clock is ticking,” Obama said sternly during his foreign policy presidential debate with Mitt Romney. “We’re not going to allow Iran to perpetually engage in negotiations that lead nowhere.”
Those words look more and more hollow with each new meaningless deadline. The Washington Examiner reports the State Department has admitted there really weren’t any ramifications if a final deal wasn’t reached March 31. After all, there weren’t when one wasn’t reached in November, either. Or last May.
The Capitulator: Obama's Nuclear Surrenders to Iran

Dennis Ross: Deal or No, Iran Will Remain a Nuclear Threat
Assuming an agreement is finalized by June 30, the administration may well be right that this was the best one possible—and that it is better than the other alternatives. That, of course, does not make it a good agreement. Even a bad agreement might be better than the available alternatives, but if the administration wants to prove that the eventual agreement is acceptable, it will need to show that it has produced the bare minimum of the outcome that we once hoped for: that there will be a breakout time of at least one year; that the Iranians cannot deny inspectors access to any site, including those on military or Revolutionary Guard facilities; and that it has anticipated a full range of different Iranian violations and won’t wait for others to respond to them. In reality, if we are to deter Iranian violations, they must know in advance what the consequences are and that they will be high.
Skepticism about an agreement based on constraining Iranian capabilities, and not on demonstrating a shift in Iranian intentions, is understandable. Rather than questioning the motivations of the skeptics, the administration would be wise to demonstrate that it has compelling answers to their concerns about the possible vulnerabilities of the deal. It might just convince some of the skeptics that the agreement is acceptable.
Mixed messages from Iran talks as high-level meeting adjourned
Russia and Iran’s foreign ministers claimed in the early hours of Wednesday a breakthrough in talks, but the US said not all issues had been agreed upon.
“One can say with relative certainty that we at the minister level have reached an agreement in principle on all key aspects of the final settlement of this issue,” Russian media quoted Sergey Lavrov as saying at talks in Switzerland.
This came after Russia’s top diplomat and the foreign ministers of five other major powers and Iran missed a midnight (2200 GMT) deadline to agree the main outlines of what they hope will be an historic accord but continued working through the night.
The powers hope this final agreement, due to be finalized by June 30, will see Iran scale down its nuclear program in order to prevent Tehran developing nuclear weapons under the guise of its civilian program.
The stakes are high, with fears that failure to reach a deal may set the United States and Israel on a road to military action to thwart Iran’s nuclear drive, which Tehran says is purely peaceful.
US threatens to ‘walk away’ from Iran talks as deadline extended
As the world powers were negotiating on a sixth day of talks in Switzerland aimed at laying the groundwork for a deal that they hope will prevent Iran developing nuclear weapons under the guise of its civilian program, the White House indicated that should a deal for a political framework not be reached, the US would leave the talks ahead of the final deadline in late June.
“If we’re not able to reach a political agreement, then we’re not going to wait … until June 30 to walk away,” said White House spokesman Josh Earnest on Tuesday.
Meanwhile the US has denied that Iran was given an ultimatum late Tuesday to decide whether to accept the deal offered by the P5+1 lest its representatives leave Switzerland by dawn.
According to Reuters, two European diplomats said that the major powers “did not want to continue negotiating beyond the early morning on Wednesday.”
A US official told the news agency that the report was “false.”
Saudi Defense Minister to Congress: ‘Iran Can’t Be Trusted’
Saudi Arabia’s newly installed defense minister told members of Congress on a recent trip to the oil-rich nation that “Iran can’t be trusted,” according to a readout of the meeting provided by Rep. Vern Buchanan (R., Fla.).
Buchanan, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, participated in a meeting with Saudi Arabia’s defense minister, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is the son of the newly crowned King Salman, to discuss regional issues and Iranian aggression.
When asked by Buchanan and other lawmakers present at the sit-down about the current talks with Iran—which have now passed their March 31 deadline—Salman called the tentative agreement disastrous for the region.
Salman “said Iran can’t be trusted,” according to a readout provided by Buchanan following the hour-long meeting in Riyadh. “He questioned why we would be negotiating with the Iranians when they are responsible for growing tension in the Middle East.”
Senator Urges US to 'Walk Away' from Iran Talks
Responding to the US State Department decision to extend Iran nuclear talks into Wednesday, Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) urged Congress to "act immediately" while demanding that the US walk away from the talks in Lausanne, Switzerland.
"The best solution is walk away from the nuclear negotiations now and return to a position of strength," Cotton said in a statement released shortly before the end of the Tuesday deadline for reaching a nuclear deal outline.
The senator called to "reinstate existing sanctions suspended under the Joint Plan of Action, and Congress should act immediately to impose new sanctions. It’s time for the United States to regain the upper hand and quit negotiating out of weakness."
After two previous deadlines came and went, Cotton said the decision to extend the talks yet again "in the face of Iranian intransigence and duplicity proves once again Iran is calling the shots."
As Dem Leader, Schumer Can’t Protect Both Israel and Obama
Throughout his 16 years in the Senate, Chuck Schumer has comfortably built a reputation as a fierce Democratic partisan while also being an ardent support of Israel. But in his new status as the leader-in-waiting of Senate Democrats after Harry Reid exits the stage in January 2017, Schumer is about to find out that, as the old Yiddish proverb tells us, you can’t dance at two weddings with one behind. Though, as a Politico article reports, he may think he can strike a balance between his pro-Israel stands and his job as the putative leader of his party’s caucus, so long as Barack Obama is in the White House that isn’t going to be possible. As the administration prepares to sell a disastrous nuclear deal with Iran while also exerting pressure on Israel’s government and threatening to isolate the Jewish state, Schumer isn’t going to be able to push back against the president’s policies at a time when he will be at the same time expected to keep the Democratic caucus united behind them.
Schumer likes to tell Jewish audiences that his name derives from the Hebrew word shomer, or guardian, and that he will always act to protect Israel. Though in recent years that promise has been tested, the senator’s impressive political skills have enabled him to hold onto that image while also being one of President Obama’s Senate foot soldiers. The same can be said of his close relationship with Wall Street figures whose fundraising help has been the foundation of his long and now apparently successful campaign to become the Democrats’ Senate leader.
As far as Israel or Iran was concerned, Schumer never took on the role of administration antagonist, as did his Democratic colleague Robert Menendez. Menendez repeatedly and publicly called out President Obama for his opposition to sanctions on Iran and for his unwillingness to support more pressure on a regime with which he was bent on fostering détente. Not so Schumer, who, despite his pledge to be Israel’s guardian, chose not to confront the president in public. Instead, we have heard tales, often recounted in friendly media coverage of the senator, about private conversations in which Schumer scolded administration figures or offered them advice in which he sought to persuade them to stop picking needless and counterproductive fights with Israel on Iran and the conflict with the Palestinians.
Report: US officials fear top Iranian commanders not in full control of local forces
An Iranian aircraft "buzzed" a US helicopter in the Persian Gulf recently, leading American officials to question the level of control that Iranian military commanders have over local forces, CNN reported on Wednesday.
According to the report, US military officials believe that the dangerous maneuver, which could have potentially set off an international incident, may have been ordered at the local level, and not by Iran's top military brass.
The incident occurred in March while talks between Iran and world powers were ongoing in Switzerland and was not in keeping with the professional manner in which Iran has conducted military exercises recently, CNN quoted officials as saying.
Elders of Zion Admit They’re Having Second Thoughts Over Allowing Obama’s Election (satire)
Following President Obama’s increasingly hostile rhetoric towards Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, several members of the Elders of Zion privately told The Israeli Daily that they were having second thoughts about their decision to allow him to be elected to the world’s most powerful office.
“We were a little apprehensive about letting a guy with the middle name ‘Hussein’ run our most important country, but we figured we’d give him a shot,” said one member of the Elders, the secret Jewish organization that makes all the world’s significant political and financial decisions. “Now, some of us are thinking we should have just gone with the Mormon instead.”
Elders complained that President Obama, in calling for a reevaluation of the U.S.-Israel relationship, has violated their secret agreement that obligated him to advance their Zionist agenda in exchange for the presidency. Still, they acknowledged, they were in no rush to force Obama out of office.
Kerry Touts Iranian Agreement Never to Nuke Israel on a Monday, Wednesday, or a Sunday (satire)
As proof that his negotiating acumen has succeeded in ‘serious concessions’ from Iran on behalf of Israeli security, Secretary of State John Kerry today revealed the mullahs agreement never to nuke the Jewish state on a Monday, Wednesday or Sunday. “John Kerry understands the serious security concerns of the Israeli people,” Kerry explained, as he spoke about himself in the third person. “Well with this agreement we’ve done just that. By our reckoning we’ve made Israel 43% safer.”
Prime Minister Netanyahu was quick to declare the agreement insufficient. “It is obscene! At the very least Kerry should have been able to get an agreement on four or five days. But just three? What are we supposed to do with that?!”
In Washington, the Republican Jewish Coalition quickly announced that this agreement was just more proof of the anti-Semitism they see as dominating the Obama White House. “If the President took Jews seriously, he would have gotten the Iranians to agree not to wipe out the Jewish State on Saturday.”
Likud MK lies to lefty NGO in attempt to discredit it
Freshman Likud party MK Oren Hazan was accused Wednesday of attempting to embarrass an Israeli left-wing NGO by providing it with false testimony detailing fictitious human rights abuses committed by IDF soldiers in the Gaza Strip.
Hazan apparently acted in hope that the fake attestation would be published and thus cast serious doubt on the organization’s credibility.
According to Breaking The Silence, an organization dedicated to collecting testimonies from current and former IDF soldiers about their military service in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, a routine fact-checking procedure revealed numerous inconsistencies in an account submitted several months ago by a man calling himself Asaf Hazan, who claimed to be a reservist who fought during last summer’s 50-day war between Israel and Hamas.
Given the problematic nature of the testimony, the NGO decided not to publish it.
IDF destroys 4 structures in W. Bank settler outpost erected to honor 3 slain teens
The Civil Administration of Judea and Samaria destroyed four temporary structures Tuesday morning in an outpost that was erected last summer in honor of the three teens kidnapped and murdered by Hamas.
One of the structures served as a synagogue, and another to offer soldiers a warm resting spot in the area.
The bodies of teenagers Naftali Fraenkel, Gil-Ad Shaer and Eyal Yifrah were found at the end of June near Hebron, just a short distance away from the Karmei Tzur settlement. Its residents immediately left their settlement to protest the killing and erected the outpost there, which they called Givat Shorek.
Non-governmental group Rabbis for Human Rights then petitioned the High Court of Justice on behalf of Palestinian landowners who claimed ownership of the property.
The group’s spokesman Yariv Mohar said that the construction was an attempt by the Karmei Tzur settlers to expand the boundaries of their community illegally.
Hezbollah Could Fire Up to 1,500 Rockets Per Day, Israeli Authorities Say
The Lebanese terror group Hezbollah could fire between 1,000 and 1,500 rockets per day in its next full-scale conflict against Israel, according to the latest estimates from the Israeli Home Front Command.
The estimate is part of updated information provided by the Home Front Command in order to assist local authorities to prepare them for a war.
“The scenario we are looking at is not a prediction of what will be. It spells out what we are building up our capabilities against. We believe we can stand up to the challenge,” a source from the Home Front Command said, the Jerusalem Post reported.
The Home Front Command said northern Israeli towns such as Kiryat Bialik could expect hundreds of civilian injuries, some deaths, and extensive damage to homes and businesses resulting from the rocket assault.
Last summer’s Gaza war saw about 4,500 rockets and other projectiles hit Israel in roughly 50 days of fighting. The Home Front command source noted that Hezbollah has been rapidly upgrading its rocket arsenal for more accurate rockets that can target both military installations and civilian areas.
ISIS takes over large parts of Palestinian refugee camp in southern Damascus
The hardline Islamic State group took control of large parts of a besieged Palestinian refugee camp in southern Damascus on Wednesday, witnesses and a monitoring group said.
The Yarmouk camp, home to up to 18,000 people, has been caught between government forces and Syrian insurgent groups including Islamic State's rivals such as al Qaeda's Nusra Front.
"They pushed from the Hajar Aswad area and Nusra fighters have joined them, they have pledged loyalty to Daesh," one witness said, using an Arabic term for Islamic State.
Gaza man ‘duped’ into selling valuable Banksy mural for $175
A 33-year-old Gaza man says he has been duped into selling a valuable work by British graffiti artist Banksy for less than $200 to a local artist.
Banksy is believed to have sneaked into Gaza earlier this year, leaving behind four murals, including one drawn on a metal door that depicted the Greek goddess Niobe cowering against the rubble of a destroyed house. The painting, titled “Bomb Damage,” was drawn on a door, the last remaining part of a two-story house belonging to the Dardouna family in northern Gaza.
Unaware of the work’s value, Rabie Dardouna said Tuesday he was tricked into selling the door to an eager local artist for just 700 shekels, or about $175. Banksy’s works have been valued as high as hundreds of thousands of dollars.
“I did not know that it was this valuable. I heard it can be sold for millions,” Dardouna said. “Now I want the door back.”

Over the past several days I have shown that, to applause at the J-Street Conference, former Ratz MK Marcia Freedman called for the end of the concept of a Jewish state and instead for a "Jewish homeland" within some sort of (presumably Arab) political entity in Palestine, with Jews as a "protected minority."

I noted that no one from J-Street condemned or even distanced themselves from her comments, and wondered why an organization that pretends that it is so concerned about a two-state solution would not say a word against its own speaker advocating a one-state solution with no Jewish state.

It turns out that if you parse J-Street's official position, it is not a whole lot different from Marcia Freedman's.

J-Street's home page does not call for a Jewish state. Like Freedman, it calls for a Jewish "homeland."

Their six principles also don't say anything about Israel being a Jewish state.

1. We support the people and the state of Israel and their right to live in security and peace and to defend themselves against those who would harm them.

2. The future of Israel depends on achieving a two-state resolution of the conflict with the Palestinian people.

3. The resolution of the conflict requires serious and sustained US leadership.

4. Israel's supporters have not only the right but the obligation to speak out when we think the policies or actions of the Israeli government are hurting Israel's and the Jewish people's long-term interests.

5. Vibrant and respectful debate about Israel benefits the American Jewish community and Israel.

6. It is both possible and necessary to engage in a warm relationship with Israel and to remain true to the values we hold most dear as Jews and as Americans--and on which Israel was founded.
There is very little here that contradict's Freedman's solution. If one of the "two states" is not recognized as the Jewish state, then J-Street's core principles does not preclude the "right of return" - Israel could become a Muslim majority state alongside "Palestine" as a prelude to Freedman's ultimate goal.

To be sure, they will sometimes sprinkle in phrases like "Jewish and democratic state" in their articles, even when they are dead-set against requiring that Israel be recognized as the Jewish state by its "peace partner." In a final agreement, they say, it would be nice if there was mutual recognition of the rights of the Jewish people to a state along with the rights of the "Palestinian people" to a state - but nothing about recognizing Israel as that state.

It is clear that J-Street's philosophy is far to the left of most American Jews, but they will downplay their true position in order to raise funding for their jihad against Israel's elected leadership.

Members of their college arm, J-Street U, have recognized that as they are frustrated that the J-Street conference was tilted more towards public relations and pretending to represent the Jewish community than towards the "progressive" values they hold dear. Stanford J-Street U members were upset that the Palestinian flag was not on stage at any of the J-Street Conference events, and they were nt happy that J-Street told them to not support divestment from Israel - a position that would be consistent with J-Street's position of pressuring Israel from without, but one that would alienate its core of clueless liberal Jews who don't parse J-Street's positions beyond the "two-state" rhetoric.

There isn't much daylight between J-Street's real positions and that of Marcia Freedman. And there is a lot of daylight between J-Street's real positions and what the majority of the American Jewish community desires. J-Street knows that it needs to lie and obfuscate its positions to the Jewish community in its attempts to divide it - and to raise money from it.

That is J-Street in a nutshell.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House Administration has registered "deep disappointment" in the refusal of the Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu to tone down "hostile and aggressive language" of the Passover religious service.

An unidentified Israeli official has confirmed that President Obama delivered a harshly worded message to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu which included a strong request that the upcoming Passover holiday not include the familiar refrain of “next year in Jerusalem”, citing the passage as provocative and unhelpful for future peace discussions.

White House sources also confirmed the story. "To have millions of Jews referring to Jerusalem as part of their heritage is an affront to the Palestinians, not to mention a slap in the face to President Obama himself who has worked tirelessly for peace despite Israeli intransigence on requests like this one."

The Administration suggested replacing it with “next year in Haifa” or “next year in peace”, reportedly Mr. Obama's choice. The final wording would best be decided in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority according to the White House source. If the two sides cannot agree on the specific wording, the United Nations General Assembly would be tasked with choosing the most appropriate conclusion to the Passover service.

In a related story, the British Advertising Standards Authority has mandated that the British Library remove the pages of the illuminated Haggadahs in their collections that have the offending phrase "Next Year in Jerusalem," saying that those pages give the impression that Jerusalem has something to do with the Jewish state.

I hate that I have to say this, but yes, this is a joke.
